Baltimore wants more than the Mets' offer of righthanders Aaron Heilman and Phil Humber and outfield prospect Carlos Gomez. Baltimore asked the Dodgers for three top players under 25: outfielder Matt Kemp, third baseman Andy LaRoche and righthander Jonathan Broxton.

"The next thing you know, they'll ask for (All-Star catcher) Russell Martin,'' a Dodgers scout said.

It's too much 3-for-1 - Kemp, LaRoche and Broxton for Bedard ??

The Orioles have consistantly shown they cannot get a deal done. Their front office/ownership has got to be the worst in MLB?

Isn't that the truth. If the Dodgers called back okaying that proposal then the O's would back off and ask for more. For all the bashing we do of the Loria Marlins at least you can do business with them.

the Astros have been in talks with them for Tejada for the past week, but I have no faith it will happen because of this. They attempted to get him last year and they had a list starting with Roy Oswalt. Needless to say that killed the deal.

MacPhail has come in and said all the right things. He appears to be thoughful, intelligent and to have a grasp of the whole arena.

Be he has just said stuff; he hasn't done anything. The Orioles need a complete overhaul from top to bottom and that entails doing things and turning around the club's fortunes.

It's obvious they aren't going to compete soon - everyone knows this. So why keep aging players that won't be here when the club does turn around?

It's also early in the offseason, so we'll see. So far the club operations are, as usual, unimpressive.

And you can thank one Peter Angelos for that... who doesn't believe Oswalt earns his salary... after all, he "only plays every fifth day".

Laroche is asking for too much here. Kemp and Broxton have apparently been offered, and for the 3rd piece the Orioles can ask for a more average player/prospect.

I'm beginning to like the Reds the best out of all the suitors. I think the team can pry Hamilton, Kotto and Cueto from them... they get Bedard, keep Bruce and Bailey, and we get our 3-1 deal for "MLB ready players".

Does that not apply to Bedard as well? Or does he only devalue pitchers when they aren't his own?

The "him" HolyRoman was referring to was Tejeda.

I thought that Wade was referring to Angelos when he/she referred to devaluing pitchers (in this case, Oswalt, asking if Bedard fell under the same scrutiny of usefulness).

Anyway, how long is Bedard under contract?

Through 2009.

HR was saying that Angelos didn't want to trade Tejeda for Oswalt (presumably because he just arrived from another planet and never heard of baseball before).

That's why the way that deal, as rumored to have gone down, would have been with the addition of a third team - allegedly the Mets. Tejeda would have wound up in Houston, Oswalt to the Mets and Baltimore would have gotten, I dunno, once I saw Oswalt was a possibility who we were giving up didn't really matter once I confirmed it wasn't David Wright or my mother. Seriously, the usual suspects were rumored to be involved, Lasto, Heilman...

The Red Sox still wouldn't trade Buchholz for him, lol. Or maybe the untouchable Chamberlain straight up, a test of who's more overvalued.

If the Dodgers don't want to include Laroche just take back Daniel Cabrera :D. Or Bruce Chen, is he still alive? Oh, he's a Ranger.

BINGO. That's EXACTLY what I meant, thank you.

Until, that is, Bedard comes up for his next contract (if he's still an Oriole). Then, suddenly, he'll "only play every fifth day" too.

Hey, this ain't my quote... I'm one of the "great unwashed" as Mr. Angelos referred to us fans who are too poor and/or disenfranchised to buy season tickets.

So Angelos is the "he" in your first paragraph who's from another planet?

I figured that if the Yanks were going to get Roy Oswalt and wouldn't have to give up too much, they could send Tejada anyplace they'd felt like it.

Kemp, LaRoche and Broxton... wow, they don't want much, do they? Guess I can mark Bedard off my wishlist for the Cardinals. Even if we could afford to give something like that up, I wouldn't want us to do it.

that's all I was saying but the opposite, like you with wright, as soon as I saw Oswalt's name on the list it was a deal breaker for me and the Astros I'm glad it didn't go down.

How about a three-way trade.

Boston receives: Erik Bedard
Baltimore receives: Dan Haren
Oakland receives: Clay Buchholz

and each GMs holds a candlelight vigil for their lost "All-Time Greats."

I dunno about Buchholz straight up (85% sure it should work), but that is a BLOCKBUSTER.

Look at his minor-league numbers. Or they throw in Javier Lopez.

No I like Buchholz you don't have to sell me on him, they may just want more than just a rookie.

Up until the arrival of MacPhail, you would be correct.
However, can you really blame a guy for trying to maximize the assets he has, as he attempts to rebuild a franchise that badly needs it, from top to bottom.
This process is going to take time, and lots of players. Let's not condemn MacPhail for the sins of his predecessors.
