--Toughest cuts were Dick Allen and Tony Oliva. Sadly I couldn't even come close to justifying a vote for Knight's franchise player Willie Mays. This will be the first time he has failed to make the team. The only other man to have made the team every year so far, Hank Aaron, is also having a sub-par season and doesn't seem likely to keep his streak alive either.

I think I got a representative from every team. In doing so, I had to bump one of my own, Joe Foy, who really deserves a spot, but can't crack this bunch of thirdsackers.

...attention paid to defense gave me the tiebreakers I needed (apologies to Frank Howard, Dick Allen, Joe Foy, Willie Horton, et al... but you're costing runs)

My last two cuts were Ernie Banks and Rick Monday, who both deserve to be here (Monday's lack of 100 ABs hurt him).

Harmon Killebrew is a noticeably better offensive player...is his slightly below average defense that important? He's been carrying my team this year.

He's on all three ballots so far.

I need to correct a vote... Frank Howard is playing well over his head defensively. 162 put-outs, 8 (eight?) OF assists and zero errors, all in Connie Mack Stadium (not the hitter's haven in 1967). So much for a PR range and FR arm.

With that in mind, it pains me to remove Paul Blair from the ballot. He's been the saving grace for the Redbirds' pitching staff.

btw--Killebrew, Allen and Foy are living down to their defensive reputation at 3B.

--Killebrew is more than slightly below average. His fielding percentage is a shockingly bad .899 to go along with his lack of range. His offense isn't as far ahead of Santo as it appears either. There is a huge park adjustment between Fenway and Shea.

I waited until the halfway point in the season, right after the big series with the Skipjacks. I only took players who had at least 42 games (half) at the position I was voting for. This is how I see it:

Catcher: Bill Freehan - He'd be first on this ballot even were he not a Legend.
Joe Torre - Helping the Skipjacks stay on my tail.
Apologies to Tim McCarver and Tom Haller, who are having great seasons as well.

First Base: Mickey Mantle - Great season for this HOFer.
Norm Cash - Would've been first with a few more PA. Having a tremendous season.
Apologies to my own Willie McCovey.

Second Base: Dick McAuliffe - Knights spark plug.
Pete Rose - Starting to shine.

Third Base: Ron Santo - Helping to lead the Legends charge.
Harmon Killebrew - Fabulous season at Fenway, but glove hurts him.
Joe Foy - Glove (not that good, but better) puts him in front of Allen.

Shortstop: Rico Petrocelli - Edges out Campy.
Bert Campaneris

Left Field: Carl Yastrzemski - Great season, beats out Robby for top spot.
Frank Robinson - Another super season from this perennial all star.

Center Field: Rick Monday - Call it a homer vote if you want, but he leads in slugging, OPS and RC/27; second in OBP; third in runs and RBI - and he has 42 less plate appearances than Kaline, who has the second lowest total!
Al Kaline

Right Field: Frank Howard - Huge season for the Shoeless Joes is helping them stay in the race.
Roberto Clemente - Having probably his finest CKL season.
Willie Horton - Lost in the misery of the Redbirds dismal season, he's having a career year.
Hated to leave Oliva and Staub off, as both are helping their teams toward playoff slots.

Starting Pitchers: Gary Peters; Joel Horlen; Phil Niekro (great season for the lowly Stingers); Jim Bunning; Fergie Jenkins; Jim Merritt; Tommie Sisk; Tommy John

Relief Pitchers: Dick Bosman; Frank Linzy; Ted Abernathy; Joe Verbanic

Lew, I have a question about your ballot. Petrocelli appears to be getting both the first team vote and a wild card vote at SS? Is he your 1st or second choice and who is your second wild card with him limited to one place on the SS ballot?

Sorry, Mark, I just screwed up. Petrocelli is my number one pick, with Campy second. I have Joe Foy at third as one WC, and Willie Horton in right as my other WC.

I am a little surprised that Rick Monday hasn't received any support here. Even though he only has about two thirds the number of PA of everyone else except Kaline, he leads all CFers in slugging, OPS and runs created/27 outs; he's second in OBP. OK, those are percentages, so it's easier to lead with fewer PA. But he's third in homers, runs, RBI, walks; and fourth in extra base hits. So I guess this would be a good time to plant the seed that Rick Monday is the leading candidate for Rookie of the Year at the halfway point!

--Only half the votes in. Deadline is midnight tomorrow. At this time we are on pace to elect at least one player from every team. Vada Pinson would be the Badger rep. He is the only Badger receiving votes so if you're undecided at CF consider him. Phil Neikro looks like a lock for the Stingers. Tommy Sisk is looking pretty solid for the Gold Sox. Bert Campaneris is virtually assured of a starting spot for the Angels. The Redbirds don't have anyone with a spot sewed up, but Joey Foy, Paul Blair and Orlando Cepeda would all be on the team if the vote ended as is. My Knights look like they will have only one rep (Gary Peters) too:eek:.
--The biggest ommission at this point looks like Steve Hargan of the Hard Cider. Hargan has been on a roll and is now 9-2 and 2nd in the league in ERA, but only 10th in the SP voting. Dick Allen and Tony Oliva are the best position players who look like they will miss, but both are behind some players having great seasons at their positions (Allen is in 4th at a loaded 3B and Brooks Robinson's fine season has him 5th on the ballot). Dick Bosman has a relief spot virtually locked up, but has been sent to the minors due to overuse. Should he still get that spot?

--I'll leave it to each individual voter to decide how to deal with Bosman's demotion. I'm going to do the same thing I did with Wes parker's injury though. I'm editting him off my ballot. Hoyt Wilhelm takes his spot.

I'll stick with Bosman, who has had a sensational season up until now. I have to consider the overuse demotion like an injury, which would not prevent me from picking him. Had I voted for Parker, I would have left him on as well. Since there is no actual game played (or even if there was), I think the players who have had the best seasons to date should get elected. Just my :twocents:
