PSYCHE!
Haha... But really, I was thinking. If the Jays really were going after Johan, what kind of package would it take? Looking at what our fellow AL East teams are reported to be offering, I'd say it would take something like:
Alex Rios, Shaun Marcum, Low-Level pitching prospect, and low-level infielder.
That's at least as good as what the Red Sox are reported to be offering, don't ya think? (Try to ignore the fact that we'd have to give Santana at least $120 million over at least 6 years).

That isnt as good as either of the Sox or Yankees packages IMO. Rios is a great start, but two low level prospects? The Twins want Hughes (#1 pitching prospect last year), Cabrera, and Kennedy (who had a sub 2 ERA at AAA last year) from the Yankees... I think they'd want more than that offer.

Shaun Marcum. Better than Hughes, since he's already somewhat proven in MLB.

There's absolutely no way that Sean Marcum is better than Hughes, sorry to say. Hughes projects to be a #1 starter, and is 21 years old. Marcum is about to turn 26 and doesn't project to be much more than what he is now.
Ask Bill Smith if he'd rather have Hughes or Marcum, and after he stops laughing, he'll tell you Hughes.

Hughes is projected to be a #1 starter. Marcum is already a #3 (possibly #2). I just don't see Hughes being that great, from what I've seen of him.

Numbers mean nothing in some cases.

i think we'd have to give up more then that like westlake said. hughes and kennedy are two top pitching prospects. cabrera doesn't compare to rios but for a package with rios and marcum, i think we'd have to include two top prospects in our system to even be in the equation.

Willis and Cabrera would have been very nice additions.

We Blue Jays fans are probably the only ones who know Marcum's true value. That makes it near impossible to make anyone else believe that Marcum is as valuable as Hughes. Even IF Marcum were as good as Hughes, no one would believe it and be willing to take a trade for Marcum over a trade for Hughes.
Willis and Cabrera would have been very nice additions.
That pretty much goes without saying. Every team in the league is saying that.

I would be very nervous to make such a significant move for a pitcher. Any pitcher really!! They can be so fragile. If it doesn't work out you can set your teams plans back years. I really like the way the Jays have developed their staff. I could see a move to replace Burnett, but not at the cost of Rios or someone with that kind of promise. The Jays will be healthy in the spring and with a healthy Ryan, Wells, Overbay and maybe Glaus they have as good a shot as anyone. Accardo as a set up guy and Jannsen with another years experience could be a 5th starter. I don't see J.P. messing too much with this kind of potential. Mind you, if they get off to a slow start I think he will be less patient then he has been in previous years. His job will depend on it.
