‘Francona Rule’ targets Tito’s pullover

By Rob Bradford | Monday, December 3, 2007 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Boston Red Sox

NASHVILLE - Major League Baseball is making sure Terry Francona is going to get a new look next year.

Bob Watson, Vice President of Rules and On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, said this morning that managers will no longer be able to wear the pullover jackets as part of their in-game uniforms.

The mandate was of special interest to Francona, who typically dons a pullover during games and butted heads with the league when asked to display his uniform top.

“There’s going to be, for lack of a better term, a Francona Rule,” Watson said. “You can only wear your uniform top or jacket. You can’t wear your nightshirt, or whatever it is. You can wear it before games, or after games, but not during games. You have to have your uniform top at all times.”

The dispute between Francona and the MLB uniform police reached its boiling point when MLB sent a representative into the visitors dugout during the second inning of the Red Sox [team stats]’ August 28 game at Yankee Stadium to check Francona’s uniform.

Earlier this year Major League Baseball informed managers who wear the pullover as part of their uniform, including Francona, Toronto’s John Gibbons and Cleveland’s Eric Wedge, that the first offense for not wearing a uniform top would be $1,000, second offense would draw a $5,000 fine, and a third time would result in a one-game suspension.

When asked if teams had been notified of the development Watson said, “They will be informed. There will be no doubt.”

Normally this wouldn't be a big deal, not even worth posting. But, as most of us know:

Due to previous health issues, Francona has difficulty with his circulation and is often cold. Therefore he is always seen with a jacket on even on very hot days.

They even went as far as sending a goon into the dugout (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2997982)in the middle of a Sox/Yankees game to enforce this rule last year. First they kick Mr. Pesky out of the dugout, (http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/03/30/baseball_ready_to_give_pesky_the_hook/) and now there going after Tito. I just don't see the logic of it. Is some potential future fan of baseball going to be turned away when they see Pesky in the dugout or Tito wearing a pullover? Are old time baseball fans disgusted when they see players they watched growing up, in the dugout when there not a member of the team or wearing the wrong top? I highly doubt it. It seems to me that MLB can't come up with any reasonable logic for things like this.

Wait...are they just making a rule for the sake of making a rule? There seems to be no reason for creating this rule.

I've never liked the manager wearing anything but the uniform during the game.

This is ridiculous. If he would wear a jeans jacket on top of his uniform, I would say MLB is right. But what is wrong with the pull over jacket?

Uniform always on top? Also when it freezes? If you are not allowed to wear a Premiere Jacket then, you will freeze to death.

Again: RIDICULOUS!! :eek::faint::thumbsdown:

I wonder what Connie Mack would have to say about this????

It is pretty ridiculous that MLB focuses on this while managers and players alike can chew during games, spit all over the place, and fondle their cups whenever they feel like it.
But, if Tito is cold, he can wear some high tech long johns. Skiers know that a very thin, light base layer can keep you very warm, and nobody would notice it under a uniform. Aren't dugouts all heated now, anyway?
Sometimes, when something stupid is bothering the man, it's easier just to let the man have his way so he feels powerful. To me, this uniform thing reflects Selig's routine-obsessed little mind (the guy eats the same lunch, hot dog and diet Coke, at the same hot dog stand every day he's in his home office).

If he needs to wear a jacket, he should just wear the regular jacket and leave the pull-over in the locker room.

Charlie Manuel took heat for the same thing when he was managing the Indians.

Amazing. Just amazing. Selig, you are a sad, strange little conformist.

Those sweatshirts are a part of the on field apparel program, hence the "Authentic" tagging. Does this mean the players in the dugouts will no longer be able to wear those hoodies that MLB produces solely for the purpose of selling to the general public for $50 (or more) a pop? Also, which jacket can they wear? MLB currently shows 3 different "authentic" jacket styles for each team. A V-neck pullover (the one you're most used to seeing the Sox wear), a 1/4 zip pullover, and the full zip premier dugout jacket. Either way, I'm guessing we'll see Tito wearing one of those so he can continue not wearing the belt.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for everyone having to wear the uniform top, but if they want to pick on some uni-related problems, I think this one should be right about last. To me, I'd rather see the players on the field wear a uniform like it was intended to, not like it's a tracksuit with the pant legs pulled down to their heels.

I agree - why shouldn't the manager look like everybody else on the team?

Maybe could Tito could organize a protest day by ML managers during which they'd all wear business suits and straw hats in the dugout.
Or, they could one up guys like Papi and Manny and wear uniform pants that are so long that they cover up their shoes entirely and drag three feet behind them on the ground. Maybe even let their boxers hang out the back for good measure.

For $3M a year Francona can just suck it up and go with the program.

Tito has health issues and he wears the pullover his uniform due to his circulation problems. I think it is terrible that MLB is making a big deal about something so trivial as this when they should have bigger more important things to worry about. If the fashion police are on patrol then lets start looking at the players and how they wear their uniforms on the field. They are the ones with the most TV/public exposure, and i would think the fashion police would want them to look their best. such a waste of time.

Next thing you know, they'll tell players they can't have 10 pounds of pine tar, dirt, grass, and foul line chalk plastered all over their batting helmets.

This kind of reminds of the "points of color" thing with Jennifer Aniston's character in "Office Space".

That's got nothing to do with this.

Now if only we could get them to enforce the the bottoms for players like Manny, Bonds, Giambi and Sheffield.

:radio"And we'll take a quick commerical break as the fashion police walk out to Manny in LF to alert him to fix his uniform. Bottom of the Ninth, 2 outs, full count, Yankees down by one on the WEEI Red Sox radio network."

....Or we could just forget all this silly stuff and play some baseball.
