The Yankees had to beat Toronto Five Consecutive Times to Win the Division Title. They Didn't.

I remember that one of the pre-season guides referred the Yankees offense as a "nuclear weapon with harmeless smoke". Even though the Yankees finished 2 games behind the Jays, they were never really in the race and Yankees fans did not demonstrate much enthusiasm. I walked up to the ticket stand on the game Tom Seaver was going for 300 wins and bought discounted ticket. The stands seemed nearly empty. George Steinbrenner so overmanaged the club, it had so many window shopped players who didn't fit, it was barely a team. During 1985, the Yankees acquired Joe Niekro but, after the season, they traded Phil Niekro to Cleveland. An angry Phil accused the Yankees of using him to get his brother Joe to come to NY.
