The Rays would be getting a ton in this deal! It looks the Twins are probably surrendering the 2008 season already.

Twins are getting the better end of that deal.

Just how bad defensively is Brendan Harris? I haven't seen him play D at all. From the numbers it appears he has terrible range.
As for the deal, I am completely unsure.

I've heard the only thing holding up the trade is Juan Rincon's shoulder. The trade will either die or be finalized by tomorrow.
As for the trade, I think it makes sense for both teams. The Twins have enough pitchers, and the Rays have enough OFer's. The Rays also wanted to bring in an older SS to compete with their young one (I think Brignac). The Rays will continue to improve their bullpen with Rincon too. The Twins get the much needed help for the offense, while getting another good prospect in Priddie.

It's a done deal;

Apparently it is Edduardo Morlan in place of Juan Rincon. That makes me like the deal significantly less.

Looks like a good trade for both teams. Both dealt from depth and acquired needed help. As a Twins fan, I look forward to Mauer, Morneau, Cuddyer and Young in the middle of the lineup, but hate to see Garza on another team. I would have much preferred to see Baker dealt.

pretty interesting deal, it'll be nice to see how this trade is looked at in a few years from now

Hopefully Morlan is the next Travis Bowyer, although I suppose it doesn't matter.

Would this indicate that the Twins are less interested in obtaining an OF prospect or young player from their potential trade partner for Johan Santana?

I suspect that out field prospects would not be needed now that the Twins acquired Young and Pridie, but who knows, it might depend on the prospect.
I would think that high level pitching prospects are what the Twins would be looking for more then positional players at this point.

I think they might put Pridie in CF with Tyner and Young gets LF, Kubel to DH.
Young played some CF but not well at all. He is young and fast. Soriano (fast and gifted but a mediocre 2B) figured out LF and did great in a stint at CF.

This is a pretty even deal, and maybe a slight edge to the Rays (although I don't know much about the two prospects being dealt.)
Bartlett is better than Harris. He's only a tick behind with the bat and is significantly better with the glove. My guess is that Bartlett has more room to grow, too.
Garza and Delmon Young are a wash to me. Both have enormous potential, but Young's first season was absolutely horrible (worse than replacement level) and Garza's a young pitcher (proudly flying the high-risk flag). It's unlikely that they turn out to be equally valuable and we might look back and shake our heads at the deal some day, but I'm not sure you can really expect one player to be significantly better than the other.
I respect both GMs for making a trade from strength towards filling a weakness even without obviously getting more in return. GMs tend to get bashed more for making a bad trade than praised for making a good one, so they're both taking some risk in the public eye.

I don't think they got to terribly much in return, but I've never liked Delmon Young as a player. At least relative to the hype. He's a good player, but he was more like the 15-20th ranked prospect than the 1st.

This could be a good trade for both ends. The Twins get Delmon Young, who will add some pop to their lineup. The Rays get Matt Garza. He appears to be a decent pitcher, and he is only 23.

I'm somewhat pleased they did something, but I don't know about this trade. The last one from the Sunshine State worked out, so an encore?
Garza is basically a #2 starter or better if he can make the starts. If Andy Pettitte and Joe Blanton can be #2s, Garza can and maybe do much more. That's the #2 out of just 5 or 6 main starters.
Deltron 0 is going to have to be competing for top honors as a Twins position player. If he's #2 out of 9 it seems like a #2 starter is giving more. He does have less risk of injury as a position player. Certainly Young is talented enough but hopefully you see what I'm getting at. We didn't get Crawford or Upton, either, Young hasn't really done anything to break out since 2005... for Tampa: no one special month, or vs. lefties, or 2nd half, or on the road (a bit better).
Garza had one huge outlier game, a stinker vs. Seattle (2.1 IP, 4 HR, 7 ER). Take that away, and I know it counts but let's try to look to next year maybe, he had a 3.01 ERA and 4 HR allowed in 80.2 IP. Would he have fetched more?
As a Twins fan I'll hope for some "new blood" effect and good health for all. I'll cross my fingers for Young in 2008 to have .330 or .340 OBP/40 2B/20 HR/20 SB with fewer GIDP and keep improving.
Oh and why is he called slow? Bengie Molina is slow, Garret Anderson is slow. Delmon Young is not slow.

Twins win on this trade.
Fine acquision b them.
Yes, I agree.
Delmon Young is the beast. Garza? I dont think so.
And Brendan Harris with Young.
Offensive stats AVG,HR,H,R
Miguel Tejada 3.14 0.296 18 81 72
Delmon Young 3.12 0.288 13 93 65
Michael Cuddyer 3.11 0.276 16 81 87
Brendan Harris 2.70 0.286 12 59 72
Delmon Young is a player like Tejada or Cuddyer ... for ex.
And he's about 24, I think.
Brendan Harris has offensive quality like Varitek, Glaus, Teahen...
Garza?
Matt Garza 5.44 5 7 3.78 66 2.1 81.0
With good ERA 3.78, IP=81.0 weak K/BB=2.1 ... I think he's for the 3rd-4th spot.

Well, the Twins got two fine arms but they need 2B and 3B:
1B Morneau 26y
2B Casilla 23y ?
SS Harris 27y
3B Punto 30y ?
LF Kubel 25y
CF Young 22y
RF Cuddyer 28y
C Mauer 24 y
Hunter, Bartlett have gone...

I like this trade if I'm the Rays. They have a logjam in the OF and their rotation is shaping up to be one of the best in the league. Seriously. I know it's hard to believe but the Devil Rays have one studrific starting roto, now. I like the deal if I'm a Tampa fan. If I'm a Twins fan I'm kind of wishy-washy on the whole trade. There's been talk of moving Santana for awhile now so are they just going to totally dismantle their pitching staff and reboot? I watched a few of Garza's games on MLB TV and I thought the kid looked really sharp. I think if I were moving Santana I'd hang onto a league min guy like Garza who looks to be a stud in the making. Ah well, at least it was a trade between two smaller markets and not a trade where a small market team was giving the Redsox, Mets or Yankees more ammo for their guns. That I like.

I don't really think you could say either team got fleeced in this deal. That said, the Rays probably made the better deal. They really didn't need Young all that much, and getting Garza, who they did need, makes this a good deal for them. Bartlett and Harris are pretty much a wash, and I don't know much about Pridie or Morlan. After a quick Baseball Cube search, I find that Morlan is a good 21-year-old Cuban reliever who will likely open 2008 in AA or AAA. Pridie had a heck of a year last year at AAA and looks like he'll start '08 in the majors. However, he's 24. In terms of immediate help, it looks like the Twins may have made the better deal. In terms of help in a couple years, which is when they'll need it, the Rays may end up winning.

Well said! Garza I think is better than Young, who walks so little that he wound up, despite hitting .288, almost 100 points better than teammate Elijah Dukes, he actually finished with an OBP .002 LOWER than Dukes.
I love the trade. There are some ifs, and I liked Bartlett, but I can't wait to see Delmon in the middle of our lineup. Losing Garza and Morlan hurts but you have to give up value to get value. And this deal traded from our strengths and addressed our weaknesses.
Sign me up for the Bill Smith fan club. We finally have a GM that will actually DO something to improve the team instead of sign washed up mediocrities.

Hopefully he can boost that walking like Reyes, Cano, Vernon Wells, Hunter and others.
