I DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS, but I thought one of you might...

Who holds the all time record for lowest on-base percentage, meaning the most plate appearence with the fewest total bases...with at least 1000 at-bats? (Should the at-bat total be lower?)

On Base Percentage = hits + walks + hbp / at bats + walks + hbp + sac flys
Slugging Percentage = total bases / at bats

The worst On Base Percentage w/1000 plate appearences belongs to Bob Friend at .150
For non Pitchers it is Bill Bergen at .194.
With 500 plate appearences the worst was Al Benton at .112

The worst Slugging Percentage w/1000 at bats belongs once again to Bob Friend at .144.
For non Pitchers it's Bill Bergen at .201.
With 500 at bats the worst was Dean Chance with .069

To give you an idea at exactly how inept Bill Bergen was, the second worst Slugging Percentage for a non-pitcher since 1900 with minimum of 1000 at bats was Luis Gomez at .239, thirty eight percentage points better than Bergen.

Thank you for the explanation...I have always been confused on that...the reason I asked the question comes from the Hall of Fame candidates list. Oddly enough I was looking at Lee Smith's stats (who I believe deserves to be in the Hall) and I noticed he had only 6 total bases in 22 years of MLB. But, he had only 64 at bats...so it made me curious. Thanks again for the answers and descriptions.

Why would any team give someone who hit a career average of less than .200 OBP 1000 AB's? How long does it take for them to realise this guy couldnt hit to save his life?

Could catch a knuckleball? (just a guess)

Why would any team give someone who hit a career average of less than .200 OBP 1000 AB's? (snip)
