I was reading a trade rumor site, and I see that a Japanese team is interested in the Tigers' Marcus Thames. Well Thames is currently under contract. So I was thinking...can MLB teams trade with Japanese teams? Has it ever happened?

I've never heard of a Japanese team trading for an MLB player who's still under contract. I can copy this to the International forum if you'd like.

Can't think of any specifics right now but I believe this may have occurred in the minors - or maybe teams were lending players accross the Pacific. I belive the Pacific Coast League may have been involved.

These things are best asked in the International Forum. There is also a nice forum at japanesebaseball.com.

I believe there was some temperary exchanges of players with the Giants minor league team in the 60's. Seems I read something about that, but can't recall the specifics.

The real expert on Japanese baseball is BBF's own Jim Albright, he'd be able to answer your question. You could send him a private message, or post a question in the Japanese thread located international section.
