As a White Sox fan, I like the trade.
Both players are good. Not great, but good. The Sox need to shake things up and SS has been a problem with Uribe.
Just FYI... Kenny Williams (GM of the Sox) mentioned:
- Uribe will be traded
- Sox still after Torii Hunter
- Orlando Cabrera will get an extension
- Sox are still going after more big-name players

I like this trade for the Halos.
They get an above-average starting pitcher who eats up innings for an overrated, old, shortstop having a career year at age 33. Meanwhile, Garland is in his peak.

I personally think the Angels got hosed on this one. Cabrera hit .301 with a .345 OBP. Not to mention that Gold Glove he won. Garland had a 4.23 ERA with only 98 strikeouts. His 10 wins go up playing with the Angels. Good job by the White Sox on this one.

Here's the whole story as posted by the AP earlier, in case your interested:
[AP] CHICAGO -- The White Sox traded right-hander Jon Garland to the Los Angeles Angels on Monday for shortstop Orlando Cabrera.
The 28-year-old Garland, an 18-game winner in 2005 and 2006, was 10-13 with a 4.23 ERA in 32 starts last season. He 92-81 with a 4.41 ERA in 246 games, including 223 starts, over eight major league seasons, all with the White Sox.
Garland was acquired by the White Sox from the Cubs on July 29, 1998, for pitcher Matt Karchner.
Cabrera, 33, batted .301 with 35 doubles, eight home runs, 86 RBIs and a career-high 101 runs with the Angels last year. He had a career-high 192 hits.
He won his second Gold Glove and led AL shortstops in fielding percentage (.983). Cabrera, who has also played with Montreal and Boston during his 11-year career, is a career .273 hitter. He was on the 2004 Red Sox team that won the World Series.
Chicago also receives cash as part of the trade.
Garland agreed to a three-year, $29 million contract in December, 2005, shortly after the White Sox won the World Series. He made $10 million last season and was scheduled to make $12 million in 2008.
Garland has been a reliable member of the rotation, throwing more than 200 innings in each of the last four seasons.
But general manager Ken Williams said the White Sox have ample depth in the minors with pitchers like Lance Broadway and will likely start with a rotation of Mark Buehrle, Javier Vazquez, Jose Contreras, Jon Danks and Gavin Floyd in 2008.
Williams said the trade with the Angels could also help the White Sox financially to make another deal.
"We're not done yet. We're still trying to land a big fish," Williams said.
The deal comes during an offseason in which the White Sox re-signed shortstop Juan Uribe, who has shown power but been inconsistent at the plate. Williams said he feels Cabrera gives the White Sox a better chance to win a championship than what Uribe has shown.
"We saw an opportunity to acquire one of the best shortstops in the game and one of the smartest in the game," Williams said. "Somebody who can fit into the No. 2 spot in our lineup for 155 games."
The White Sox tumbled to fourth in the AL Central last season and Williams has vowed to make changes.
"Last year did not sit well with any of us. I'll be damn if we're going to go through that again. We will aggressively pursue a championship," Williams said.
The White Sox hope to bolster their bullpen and need help in the outfield. Reports say they have met with free agent Torii Hunter.
"This is just a start," Williams said.

A .345 OBP is not good. He was a below-average hitting shortstop whose prowess is completely overinflated by his shiny .301 average and his 86 RBI. Also, he slumped badly in the second half, with a .268/.321/.338 line. Not only that, he is 33 years old.

Dang, I was hoping my team could get Garland, but a good trade for both teams.

Among major league shortstops he was 11th in OBP, and his OBP was .70 points higher than the incumbent Uribe. Combine that with gold glove defense and it's a pretty great trade for the White Sox. Garland is average at best.

He's Ozzie Guillen's type of player. And I mean that in the worst way possible.

Yes, it is a good trade for the White Sox. Uribe flat out is not a good shortstop, and Cabrera is a definite upgrade because of mainly his good defense. At the same time, they have a glut of arms and can afford to drop one on the Angels, who need the pitching much more badly.
Garland, however, is a great #3 or #4 starter. He is effective, reliable, and will eat 200 innings per year. Not that wins mean anything, but he has 6 consecutive years of 10 or more wins. 4 of those he has had an above-average ERA+, and in the last three years he has had ERA+'s of 128, 105 and 112. I dare you to find a couple of other AL starters who have done that while pitching 3 consecutive 200 inning seasons. Only the best are there. There's Lackey, Santana, Buehrle, and maybe a few else.

Bunting with Thome. Hitting and running with Konerko. Bunting with Dye.

What exactly do the Sox plan to do with their pitching staff? They traded McCarthy, gave Buehrle an extension, then traded Garland. Let me guess, they're going to resign Contreras then trade John Danks after a breakout year?
The Tigers, Indians and Twins say... keep it up!!

Will have Brandon Woods a chance in 2008 as SS?

This is a trade of two overrated players. Garland because of his two seasons with high wins totals and Cabrera because of his undeserved Gold Glove. They're both about league-average players making more than they should. I'm surprised both teams couldn't get more for their guys, however. It's not like perceived "18-win starters" and "gold-glove shortstops" aren't useful.
As for Uribe, he had a surprisingly bad fielding performance in 2007, but he'd been one of the best in the field before that.

Ummm... McCarthy is horrid and was for Texas in 2007. I don't expect much from him in his career.

I don't know about O. Cabrera being overrated, personally he brings alot to the table imo and he seemly always gets the clutch hit for his club....weather it was for the RS or with the Halos.....and actually does play a very good SS, imo the WS got the better end of the deal, but with Garland returning home to the California area he could very well turn things around from a very disappointing season last season, but then again the whole WS team had a disappointing season.......so how much of his decline was due to the whole team?

I seem to recall Washington wanting McCarthy as part of any Soriano deal at the '06 trade deadline, which was why Chicago wouldn't go for it. Was he really horrible before the trade to Texas, or could he just be off to a slow start as a young rookie in a hitter-friendly ballpark?

The White Sox seem determined to win now and get older. So far, I can only see latter happening.

Anytime the Angels can get a 110 ERA+ starter who gives who 200 innings for a below-average hitting shortstop (who admittedly does seem "clutch"), that's a plus for Bill Stoneman in my book. Plus Garland wasn't that disappointing. He had a 112 ERA+ and 208 1/3 innings. Every team wants that guy. Sure, he only had a record of 10-13, but wins and losses are not that crucial in determining a guy's value, especially if he comes from a 72-90 team like the White Sox.

I like this deal for the Angels. Cabrera is a good solid SS. He does the little things well and his defense will be missed. But at 33 he'll likely be entering his decline phase. With pitching at a premium it's nice to get a 28 yr old starter with a proven track record. As an Angels fan I'll take this trade in a heartbeat.
