This may have been done, so stop me if it has. I will write a trivia question. Somebody answers that trivia question, and posts a new trivia question where the answer to that question is in some way connected to the answer to the previous question. The person who answers the second question will post the answer, how the two answers are connected, and the next question. And so on down the line. All questions must have an answer that is a baseball player. No questions like, "What do all these players have in common?"

In Joe DiMaggio's debut, he had three hits, and was the only Yankee to get a hit off this pitcher, who pitched the eighth inning.

What pitcher signed with the Yankees on June 12, 1923? (Hint: be careful of the word pitcher)

Well, it was three days before Lou Gehrig made his debut, so I'll guess that he was the Yankee pitcher.

That is correct. Gehrig was a pitcher for Columbia University when he signed. Your turn, sir.

11-15-2007, 08:44 PM
Well, my first thought was "who was in attendance at Briggs Stadium on the day when Gehrig's consecutive games streak ended?" - the answer being my dad.
But this one will have to do. Who went golfing with Gehrig after the 1938 season, and commented that it was strange that Lou wasn't wearing golf shoes, but sneakers, and that his legs were sliding across the ground when he walked?

That would be Wes Ferrell. I read this in Donald Honig's great book, "Baseball - When the Grass Was Real". It's a book inspired by Lawrence Ritter's "The Glory of Their Times", featuring interviews and anecdotes by players who also played in the majors.

In 1976 Randy Jones won the Cy Young award in the National League after finishing 2nd in 1975. He was the second pitcher to do that.
Who was the first pitcher to do win a Cy Young award the year after finishing second?
Alternate question:
In 1976 Jones won 22 games despite having only 93 strikeouts. Since 1901 that feat has been accomplished 132 times.
Since 1901, which 20-game winner had the fewest strikeouts in a season?

According to Wikipedia, the man Donovan swapped berths with was George Weiss. Here is what I found:
In June 1923, while traveling on the 20th Century Limited train to Chicago, Illinois for Major League meetings, Donovan, the New Haven manager, died when the train wrecked in Forsyth, New York. [6]New Haven president George Weiss had swapped berths with Donovan and escaped with a minor injury. Phillies owner William F. Baker (the man who accused him of wrongdoing in the Black Sox scandal) was also on the train, but he was unhurt.

Well, since I don't really know much at all about George Weiss, and this is, after all, trivia association, I'm going to go out on a limb (if I'm allowed to) and take the last name of Weiss and ask a question vaguely associated with another Weiss....
Walt Weiss was part of a trio of Oakland Athletics who won the Rookie of the Year Award in three consecutive years- 1986-88. The Dodgers can lay claim to having more ROYs than any other team with fifteen (and would have had sixteen had the prize been awarded in 1947). They had two remarkable skeins when they fielded four consecutive ROYs (1979-82) and FIVE in a row (1992-96). There were only two years in which both the NL and AL ROY went on to HOF careers. (2001 will be the third once both Ichiro Suzuki and Albert Pujols are enshrined).
My incredibly easy question: What were the years and who were the HOFers who won the award?

What exec for the Indians failed to get Aparicio to sign when the two sides couldn't reach a salary agreement, leading Aparicio to go to the White Sox? (I think that's how the story goes). Note: he was a very famous player.

Hank Greenberg was the General Manager of the Indians who tried to undercut Aparicio's $10,000 signing bonus.
Going into the last day of the 1938 season, Greenberg had 58 home runs. The Tigers were scheduled to play a doubleheader that day, and Greenberg failed to hit a home run in either game. The second one was called early because of darkness. Who pitched for the opponents in the first game, and why, perhaps, wasn't Greenberg able to hit a home run off of him?

The pitcher was Bob Feller. The reason Greenberg didn't homer was because the games were played in a different ballpark than usual. It was a much longer distance to the fences. I'm pretty sure I read that he hit a ball off the fence that would have been a home run if they were playing in the regular stadium.

Good guess, but no, it's not Koufax. This is not a superstar of Koufax's caliber, but is very much recognized as one of the hardest throwers ever. This may be one of those questions which, if you don't know the answer, will elicit nothing but educated guesses, but then the list of 'hardest throwers ever' isn't a very long one, either. If you need a clue, let me know.

If it's August 18, 1943 that you're looking at, the Dodgers lost both ends of a doubleheader that day. Gregg and Barney were the starting pitchers, but the Dodgers were swept by the Cubs, 7-5 and 15-6.

Yes, when they were called up from Montreal. And Whit Wyatt should definitely be a familiar name to everyone who has a good degree of familiarity with baseball history. He was a good pitcher. And he's the answer. The date was Aug. 16, 1943, in case anyone's wondering.

Here's a full list of the questions so far:
1. What pitcher signed with the Yankees on June 12, 1923? (Hint: be careful of the word pitcher)
2. Who went golfing with Lou Gehrig after the 1938 season, and commented that it was strange that Lou wasn't wearing golf shoes, but sneakers, and that his legs were sliding across the ground when he walked?
3. Who was the very first hitter Wes Ferrell ever faced as a big league pitcher? He was a HOFer who once saved a woman from drowning and had a seven year span where he batted an incredible .379 over that stretch.
4. Which player wrote to Harry Heilmann in December 1926, telling him of the two letters that this player had sent to Ban Johnson implicating Joe Wood and Ty Cobb in betting on games.
5. In 1920, the spitball was outlawed. 17 pitchers were allowed to continue using it for the remainder of their careers. Dutch Leonard was one of them. Three of these pitchers became HOFers. Who were they? (Stan Coveleski, Red Faber and ??????)
6. In 1927, Burleigh Grimes had the most errorless chances by a pitcher that year with eighty-seven. I believe that Frank Owen has the record for a pitcher for most errorless chances in a season with 151. Who is in second place?
7. In 1976 Randy Jones won the Cy Young award in the National League after finishing 2nd in 1975. He was the second pitcher to do that. Who was the first pitcher to do win a Cy Young award the year after finishing second?
8. Mike Marshall holds the record for most batters faced by a pitcher who did not start any games. Since 1957, who holds the record for fewest batters faced in a single season while they started every game they pitched in, and qualified for the ERA title?
9. This player was on the 1979 Yankees with Dave Righetti and has the lowest rate of GIDP/PA (since the statistic has been kept regularly) of any player with at least 5000 PA.
10. Mickey Rivers, prior to be called up to the majors, played for the El Paso Sun Kings, later renamed the Diablos. This guy pitched for El Paso, and is the only person ever to throw a no-hitter by himself on the last day of the season.
11. Mike Witt attended Cypress Junior College. Which one of Witt's former batterymates also attended Cypress Junior College?
12. Brian Downing was born on October 9th, the same day as this Hall of Famer who went to the University of Alabama.
13. Joe Sewell was thrust into a pennant race with fewer than a hundred professional games when the guy who he would ultimately replace was "sidelined" by a toss from this pitcher
14. Carl Mays was regarded as a good hitting pitcher, and he hit 5 HRs over his career. Which Hall of Famer shares the single-season mark for full-time pitchers in this category, with six?
14. Since 1901, Fergie Jenkins is one of 4 pitchers to win 24 or more games in a season in the American League and the National League. Jack Chesbro and Joe McGinnity are two of the other three. What other pitcher has won 24 or more games in a season in both leagues since 1901?
16. But there's one interesting piece of trivia, sort of like the Buddy Holly/Waylon Jennings trivia, about Bill Donovan's death. Who did Donovan trade berths with?
17. George Weiss has the same last name as Walt Weiss who was part of a trio of Oakland Athletics who won the Rookie of the Year Award in three consecutive years- 1986-88. There were only two years in which both the NL and AL ROY went on to HOF careers. My incredibly easy question: Name one of the HOFers?
18. What exec for the Indians failed to get Luis Aparicio to sign when the two sides couldn't reach a salary agreement, leading Aparicio to go to the White Sox?

While pitching in relief, on 4/23/1966 Fergie hit a solo homer and a run scoring single off Don Sutton to enable the Cubbies to beat the Dodgers 2 to 0 for his first victory as a Cub.

Don Sutton's loss was the first of 13 in a row he would lose to the Cubs. Which Chicago pitcher did Sutton finally beat to end that streak?

In 1965, Holtzman was named a collegiate All-American for the University of Illiniois. What Arizona State third baseman was named to the All-America team that year?
