Yes, look, I specified it! :laugh
2-part question:
After the Deadball Era, what player(s) has or have racked up the most bunt singles....
A) In one season?
B) In a career?

I heard it's Bret Butler, 42, in 1992

Hey RMB!
Surely, Willy Taveras bested that as an Astro in 2005...or was it 2006? - I believe he bunted for 70 infield singles. (Someone had better check that math!)
That, of course, is just one part of the question....and I don't even know if it's correct, yet. ;)

Seriously, if it was 2006, bunts were MORE THAN HALF of his singles

Yes, I BELIEVE that he established a record....maybe only for the National League....but that is impressive. It reminds me of a guy named Henderson in the speedy department. ;)

I think you may be confusing bunt singles with infield singles. According to Wikipedia, in 2005 Tavares led the majors with 71 infield hits, and 31 bunt singles.

Okay, this is great.... :) Thank you, ipitch.
So, how does one distinguish between infield singles and bunts? Official scorer? Pose of player in batting stance? I really don't know.

Well, if he squares around to bunt then it's a bunt single, if he swings, it's an infield single... I think it's simple enough.

Westlake,
I've seen instances where they count a bunt as an infield single, and vice-versa. That's why I asked....looking back, it probably sounded like an ignorant question.
I guess it's truly scorer's discretion.

If you actually saw a swinging infield single counted as a bunt, then I'm pretty sure the scorer screwed up. A bunt is an infield single, but not all infield singles are bunt singles. So, for example, Tavares had 71 infield hits and 31 bunt singles in 2005, which means that he had 40 infield hits in which he swung (didn't bunt).

Alright, going on that, we have 40 infield hits, and 31 bunt singles.
Where does that place him (if at all) alongside all-time single-season bunt kings?
This thread is getting very interesting; let's keep it going.

No, it's not really. An bunt single, as long as it stays in the infield, is always an infield single. An infield single is only a bunt single if he squares around and bunts it.

When were bunt singles first accounted for? How accurate is it? Can we even go back over game accounts and figure this out?

There isn't much reliabitlity in game accounts beyond the past several years. Some scorers were more diligent in noting a bunt, but some didn't make a distinction. We'll never know the true record.

NOW we are truly probing into the heart of this question!!! Nice, bkmckenna!
These stats will really be an incredible find, if they are found.

This year Taveras had 36 bunt singles and I believe near that 70 infield singles total again for the Rockies.
