Rocktober wasn't as successful as a lot of us had hoped.
Best of luck to all in November.

Well, since last months thread was closed prematurely... yesterday brought:
Former NY Giant Whitey Lockman. Mr Lockman was nice enough to sign my 8x10 for me. ( I enclosed his donation request of $25). That success completes my mission to get Bobby Thomson, Clint Hartung, and Lockman on 8x10's, I also received Don Mueller too. Each one of them played a pivotal role prior to Thomson's "shot heard 'round the world".

AC, that's a cool project you have! You should get Ralph Branca, he had a pretty big role too.... I think he is pretty cool with the fact that he gave up one of the most famous homeruns in baseball history.... There is a cool 8x10 available with he and Thomson and he has he hands around Thomson's neck joking around with him...

I already have Branca on 2 cards. However, I would like him on a 8x10. I'll have to search my favorite site for that pic.

For those of you that may have lots of 1987 Topps cards laying around, find card #56 Brewers Leaders and send as many as you have to Mr. Starrette. He was the pitching coach for the Brewers and is pictured on the card. He wrote me a very nice note asking that if I come across any more of these cards to please send them to him. If you need the address, please PM me and I will gladly share with you.

Did you mark on the outside of the envelope: "Donation enclosed"?
No, I'm a little afraid to do that. Just in case a mail carrier decided they'd like some extra cash. I'd only really do it if it was a tough person to get.

Tampering with mail is a federal offense. What's the chances of them getting caught? Probably slim to none, but if they do get caught, see ya in about 20 yrs.

Have you ever recieved back a envelope that had been sealed but then re-opened before it got to you? I had that once... the postmark was Tampa, FL (I Just hope it wasn't one of the Yankees ST ones... next year I will use very specific stamps so I will be able to tell)

Hey Paul,
I don't, but I am sure that I have.... but that's more than likely due to the (ex)player failing to seal the envelope properly. I can't count how many times I have gotten back cards, or a photo back and the envelope flap is literally completely open. Luckily the contents were still there.
95% of the donations that I send are in the form of check or money order. I NEVER send cash. That's just silly. So the few times that I have sent out requests with "donation enclose" on the outside of the envelope; 100% I get back my items signed. If I send a check or a m/o if the mailman decides to tear it open, how will he/she be able to cash it?

I know its a federal offense, but like you said its probably a slim chance they would get caught. If their was a signer who would only open mail marked "fee enclosed" I'd right it on there. Otherwise I'd rather not take the chance.

Yes...a number of times..opened, resealed, tampered with...missing items, missing all items.
I have had envelopes put in a special bag from the Post Master appologizing for the "mishap". I could be the "thief" or poor attention from the player or the equipment at the PO itself. All the above mentioned, make for a rather blad return.
I am not so carefull with stamp useage but know a hobby friend that places stamps in a position desginating where they were sent....i.e. sideways if going to ST...and a different stamp if a "current players"...it gives a more
heightened expectation to the return...like "Wow, sideways, Liberty Bell stamp...that's got to be current player, from ST on a Wednesday...!!!!
For me its "set it and forget it"...I think the number of returns we get should outwieght the negatives in the hobby.
