View Full Version : 1967 Free Agent Auction
leecemark
10-29-2007, 05:48 PM
--The auction will commence at 8PM EST on Friday, November 2. Only 4 players are scheduled for the live draft; Willie Stargell, Jim Fregosi, Mike McCormick and Willie Davis. The remainder of the free agents will be available for bidding as soon as the PFA closes and will conclude at 9PM EST on Tuesday, November 6. For those new to the process, bidding is made in increments of 250K. During the PFA bidding on a player will be finalized on a going once, twice, sold basis. In the secondary auction the highest bid with a post time on/before 9Pm EST wins the player. During the last hour of the secondary bidding you are limited to bidding on one player per post.
--Attached are the available players, minus anyone who may be drafted in the 5th round of the rookie draft.

--Everyone please get your roster and salary data updated and posted it here so you and everybody elese knows what you have to spend in this auction. For example;
--Knights: 68M for 39 players (32M to spend on 1 player)
--Please keep in mind that you are required to have 40 players under contract for your 100M by Opening Day. You must reserve enough money to sign minimum wage guys to round out the 40 man and you will be charged a cap penalty of 250K for each vacant spot if you fail to do so. You may go over 40 in the signing periold if you have the cap space to cover them, but the excess would have to be released before Opening Day. The contracts of any players released at this point will be charged against your cap.

Gold Sox are at 68.75M for 37 players (and almost a third of that goes to Jim Perry). We'll likely open up the wallet for one pitcher, probably McCormick, then just grab some filler to eat innings in our woefully thin rotation. Lineup looks pretty good this year, though.

--There are some discrepancies between what I've got programed into some of these rosters and the number of players being reported here. For example, I've got the Gold Sox with 33 players while Dan says it should be 37. Everyone please review your rosters in this attachment and let me know what the differences are so we can try and get them resolved.

While all team figures are not in, after looking through rosters, rookie draft and older posts I see... (subject to corrections and verification by Commish and fellow owners)
422 players under contract for 908.750M
58 players to be drafted for 291.250M
for an average of just over 5.000M per player
Cannons have 40 man roster and need 0 players while the Mighty Badgers have 21 players and will need 19 more to fill roster.
Closest to Badgers are The Stingers, needing 9 spots to fill
Wonder how much of that 291 million will go to the 4 PFA's tonight.
See you there

--The Cannons have 33 players under contract. The Shoeless Joes and KNights each have 39 players, making those the fullest rosters. I'm not sure what the average salary is now, but 5M seems very high as it can't be more than 2.5M once each team is at 40 players (that would be with each team right at the cap). By my count (and this is what is currently programmed) its;
Cannons 33
Badgers 21
Gold Sox 38
Diablos 36
Shoeless Joes 39
Skipjacks 36
Gamblers 32
Knights 39
Legends 36
Hard Cider 36
Redbirds 37
Stingers 29
--Anybody who has a different count please crosscheck the attachment a couple posts up.

Was gonna go redo paperwork then thought "are you crazy?"
Will just make best guess as to money available.
One note, my 5.0M figure above was the amount available for open roster spots in tonights auction. Marks 2.5M is, of course the avg if everybody spends their 100M on 40 man roster.
Ed - Buppers Badgers
Mark, you seem to be missing two of my players: Pat Kelly (who I took in this year's draft), and Bobby Murcer (who I took in the 65' draft.) Also, you have Chuck Harrison down as one of my players when it's really supposed to be Chuck Hinton.

And how does the contract size/length work? Like people have been putting there bids at 4.75m, is that minimum for 3 years or something?
mac195
11-03-2007, 09:04 AM
From the rules thead on free agency:
D. Players signed as free agents are eligible for multi-year contracts. Contract length will depend on the salary paid, as follows:
a) Players signed for 8 million or more, contract must be 3 - 5 years.
b) Players signed for 5 million to 7.75 million, contract must be 2 – 4 years.
c) Players signed for less than 5 million, contract shall be 1 – 3 years.
So $4.75 M is the highest possible bid if you only want a one-year contract.

--If anybody has an IF slot to fill and would like to do it with somebody a little better than whats left in the free agent pool, the Knights have a real surplus of talent after signing Fregosi. Horace Clarke is a decent hitting, VG fielding and running everyday 2B. He is a definate upgrade for at least several teams and has some upside (his bat falls off in 68, but he is an EX fielder and 69 is his best overall season). As those with DMB experience can tell you, switch hitters tend to out perform their numbers so he should be even better than advertised. If 3B is what you need, then Don Wert may be your man. He hits and fields on a par with Clarke, but lacks the speed, switchhitting or upside. Either of them can be had for a future draft choice or a pitcher who cotributes in 68.
-- For a slightly higher price Cesar Tovar could be available. Tovar is a capable 2B/3B and VG in all three OF spots. He is a solid starter or great 10th man the next 2 seasons and a potential All Star for 2 more before he is eligible for free agency. Leo Cardenas could be had if its a SS you need. He is more or less a full time player for 67-8, although admittedly not an inspiring one. He is probably the 2nd best SS in basball in 69 and about 17M cheaper than my other option at the spot that year! He has a decent year as a starter in 1970 too.
--Finally, if its just a utility guy you need Jose Pagan is availlable at minimal cost. Pagan is a solid fielder almost anywhere on the diamond and brings a decent bat. He would be a solid platoon option at 2B/SS/3B as well as a handy utility option.

--The Knights announce a major trade with Buppers Badgers. Leecemark send Cesar Tovar, Horace Clarke and Woody Fryman to Buppers for Camilio Pascual and the Badgers first pick in the 1968 draft. Smokey Braithwaite had this to say of the deal "We hated to give up our 1965 first rounder Cesar Tovar who looks ready to contribute this season. Horace Clarke is also coming off a fine rookie season and figured to get alot of playing time this season. Woody Fryman is a little further away, but we think he will be a solid MLB starter. The chance to pick up the Badgers first rounder after what promises to be a rebuilding year for them was just too good to pass up though. Getting our old ace camilio Pascaul back was a nice bonus too, although he is not quite recovered from the elbow injury that wrecked his 1966 season."
--This trade does send the Knights back into the free agent pool. We were at 40, but this move drops us to 38 and 2 the traded players figured to make the Opening Day roster.

Nice trade, Mark. I tried to work out a trade for Ed's top pick next year, but all I had to offer was OFers and couple of pitchers. I guess he must've been looking for infielders. Looks like it'll work out well for both sides. I ran off ten sims this morning. Taking the usual caveats into consideration (lineups/rotation set by computer manager, over use of some players, etc.), it appears that Ed has a chance to escape the league cellar, and picking up Tovar will help. He had the worst overall record five of ten times, but had a couple of really decent seasons as well. I plan on running more sims once the FA auction is over.

Bobby Bonds is the prize of rookie class IMO and can start (well 1/2 time anyway) right away. Andy Messersmith would be my 2nd choice and he is a very nice value who pays off quick too. After that I guess I like Al Oliver best, but he isn't really an upgrade on Tovar (much less Tovar and friends), except for the re-sign value. If Ed can get the Badgers to a better finsih than that then I think he has won the trade.

His last post was on October 7th, so I don't know if it's a question of not caring. It may just be that he doesn't have enough free time. IIRC, he's a junior in high school, and from what I know, juniors don't have a lot of free time, not when they're as smart as Chris and also play football, which I think he does.

If you get the top pick, Bobby Bonds is a no-brainer choice. I traded for an additional pick next year, but I'm pretty sure it won't help me get Bonds. I think Scott has improved the Redbirds enough so that he won't be finishing in the basement. As for the next pick after Bonds, it would depend on what one needed. Messersmith would be the top pitcher, but if one needed a third baseman Bill Melton or Richie Hebner would likely be the choice. As far as OFers, I might be tempted to take Carlos May over Oliver if I was only looking at the six year window.
WOW!!! Way to root for the new guy. Actually hoping I finish last

Yeah, that Mark is a great sweet-talker, then he turns on you in a New York second!:p:laugh
In all honesty, it was a gamble from both sides - which makes it a good trade.
And BTW, Ed, get in touch with me. I could really improve your team this season for your 1970 first rounder.....:laugh:nod::D
As far as Chris not participating, I sure hate to see that. It'd be tough to lose both Wil (no offense, here, Kyle - you've done a great job so far) and Chris in the same year, simply because they've been with us since the league's inception and were both good owners. If he plays football, maybe he'll show up again once the season is over, which should be soon.
