If I don't get McNertney or Allen, I'm open to trades for infielders. I've got about seven pitchers with good years in the not-too-distant future, and while some (Bahnsen, Blass, Hiller) are untouchable, the rest could be had in the right deal.

Well, I figure the steal of the draft is either Green at 3M or Mike Shannon at 1.25M. Green has a lot more seasons to play, but since he can only be signed for three years like Shannon, I'd say Shannon is a wee bit more valuable because he's full time all three years, while Green only has one full season.

--Pete Richert was the only player signed tonight at more than the 1-3 year salary range. Usually we have a few guys in the secondary market who get surprisingly big contracts, but this group lacked even a demi-star.

J W

You're right Lew -- that's a gaff on my part. But we're still very happy with what we've got:

Richert (5.25) - 4 yr (67-70)
Giusti (1.50) - 2 yr (67-68)
Cimino (4.75) - 1 yr
Ritchie (3.0) - 1 yr
Graham (1.0) - 1 yr

In for a penny, in for a pound with Richert. If he survives expansion he'll serve us well in 69-70.

That takes us to 41 players / $95.5 mil. Anyone up for a two-for-one trade before I release someone? :p

I ran off fourteen sims today, using the most recent file Mark sent me, which included just about all of the free agent signings. One huge caveat to bear in mind - these are run using the computer manager's lineups and pitching assignments. Also, the manager preferences are set by the computer manager as well. So although the sims give some idea of how a team might expect to finish, it is a very rough idea. The set of averages can be found at this link (http://www.geocities.com/lougehrig24/autosimstandingsaverages.html) if anyone is interested in looking at them. But having run many test sims in the past, I can say without reservation that having a human set the lineups, pitching assignments and manager tendencies can make a huge difference for the positive. If you have any questions, let me know. At this point the seasons are all saved to an encyclopedia of 14 simmed seasons, so player info is there as well.

The following file is a summary of each team's most wins, fewest wins, finishes, and playoff appearances. I think the strangest season was season number 8. The Hard Cider and Diablos tied for the Cartwright Division with 89 wins each, so one would get into the playoffs even though their record was only the fifth best overall. The Gamblers had their best season with 91 wins, and the fourth best record, yet didn't make the playoffs. There were only five teams who made the playoffs at all - the Knights and Legends all 14 times; the Skipjacks 13 times; the Hard Cider 12 times; and the Diablos 3 times (counting the tie as one each for the Cider and Diablos). Three teams (Cannons, Redbirds, Shoeless Joes) didn't make it any higher than seventh. And things seem to be looking up for the new Badgers; Ed has done some good things with the team, and they finished dead last only once in 14 tries, and never worse than ninth the other 13 times (hey Ed, I've still got some guys to trade if you're interested - Jim Northrup could help you....). And Kyle seems to be doing a good job with the Gamblers, who never finished lower than eighth, and made it as high as fourth. The Legends seem to be headed for their best season yet, as they never won fewer than 101 games, but we'll see...:shhh: Looks like the Hulbert will be the league's strongest division, with both the Legends and Skipjacks doing well, and Ed doing well with the Badgers. The Skipjacks averaged 100 wins (as did the Knights), while the Legends averaged 111.
Things aren't looking so good for the Shoeless Joes and Cannons, who averaged the least number of wins at 69 and 63 respectively. But Joe can probably help his team, whereas if Chris doesn't appear shortly and his team runs on computer manager's instructions, it'll be an ugly season for the Cannons.

Looks like an interesting season. Good luck to all!!

lowering your available money for this season to 99M..

Geez, if he has 99M AVAILABLE, that means he signed 36 players AND took a hit for four others, all for 1M!! Nice going, Max!!:applaud::clapping:gt  :laugh

The Legends averaged 111 wins?

I guess your guys are the team to beat this year after all. I'll be gunnin' for ya.

--I haven't recorded the data from my sims, but I've had similar results - at least where the Legends are concerned. I'd say they are more likely to break the single season win record than to miss the playoffs. Some of the other results were different though. I had the Diablos and Gamblers making the playoffs with some frequency. Not as much as the Legends, Knights, hard Cider and Skipjacks, but more than Lew found. I see the Cannons as quite a bit better than Lew's sims would suggest too. I did enter what I thought to be the best lineups for each team instead of letting the CM make all the decisions though so that would make a difference.

Hm. One winning season out of twelve. The Gold Sox really don't want to tank this year, at least partially because we don't have any draft picks until the fourth round.

Lew, do you have data on how my pitchers performed? I'm wondering what the problem was, and what I need to go out and fix.

--Dan, your pitching was anywhere from average to terrible in my sims. Your rotation is a bigger problem than your bullpen. You do have both CYA winners from 67, but unfortunately for you it is in a season where both winners were undeserving. Still if you had 2 more like hem you be pretty good. You don't though and alot of things will have to go right for the Gold Sox to make a serious run this season.

I personally think having a human manager set everything as opposed to the computer manager makes a world of difference, and everything else being nearly equal is the biggest factor there is. Maybe with averaging 111 wins, I should follow what the computer manager did, but when it had Ollie Brown playing more than Rusty Staub......

Dan, as with everyone's team, your pitchers were all over the place. Jim Perry has a great ERA some sims, and is last in others. In looking quickly at all 14 seasons, it would appear though that Whitey Ford and Cecil Upshaw have more bad seasons than good. Mike McCormick seems to be pretty solid, either in the middle or at the top of the ERA list. Lonborg had about four really decent seasons, but seems to be from the middle to the end in the others. If you want, I could save each Team Pitching season as a separate text file and send them to you. Let me know.

I think the biggest disappointment for the Legends was the performance of rookie pitcher Tom Seaver. He was last or next to last in ERA on my team eight of the 14 seasons, and was no better than middle of the pack the rest of them. The others are all over the place, although Eddie Watt seems to be consistently very good to excellent. We'll know in a little while, though.

I had the Diablos and Gamblers making the playoffs with some frequency.

They were very close several times, being a game or two out. I can see either of them making the playoffs, especially if the computer gives a couple of players career years.

The one season I had 127 wins was a real fluke. It raised the entire average quite a bit. I think my team ERA was 2.70. I don't think that'll happen!

If you could send me the Team Pitching file for all fourteen seasons, that'd be great. Just send it to bedard_erik@yahoo.com (not my personal account).

--Locking this thread down now that the free agent signing period is closed. Offseason thread will be closed and replaced by season thread as of midnight (or shortly thereafter) tomorrow.
--Lew, it should be possible for a team to rcord a 2.70 ERA in 1967. The offensive level was significantly higher in all my sims than it actually was in 1967 though. This has been true for most seasons. I think 2 factors are in play. One, the program is based on modern pitcher usage. Most starting pitchers will pitch less than they did in real life and/or be less effective when pushed for those heavy usage levels.
--Two, platooning is more heavily used in the CKL than in real life. Good LH hitters are generally average or worse against LH pitchers. I platoon even a guy like Billy Williams, except in his very best seasons. Tommy Agee is his partner this year and even though he is not nearly as good he is better (alot better in my sims) vs LHP than Williams. Always going for the platoon advantage drives offensive levels up. It is also why LHP in the CKL often have a hard time repeating real life success (of course really great pitchers - say Sandy Koufax - can overcome that).

Wow... Don McMahon is a BEAST. Could you imagine how he'd have done if they every used him as a modern-style closer like we do?

Darn you Chris and your $$$ :p
