DETROIT (AP) -- The Detroit Tigers addressed one of their biggest needs Monday, acquiring shortstop Edgar Renteria from the Atlanta Braves for two prospects.
Renteria batted .332 in 124 games with the Braves this year, finishing with 12 homers and 57 RBIs. Detroit went into the offseason needing to add a shortstop after deciding to shift Carlos Guillen to first base.
The Tigers gave up right-hander Jair Jurrjens, who showed signs of promise last season, and minor league outfielder Gorkys Hernandez.
"We are excited to add an All-Star-caliber shortstop in Edgar Renteria to the Tigers organization," Detroit president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. "Edgar is a quality player, proven winner and tremendous leader that solidifies our infield."
I think this is a great move. Jurrjens looked OK, but he's a right-handed control pitcher - sort of the new Dave Rozema.

So what's up with Guillen? Is he moving to first?

I thought he usually played 1B last season.

Renteria is such a nice player, I can't get over the Tigers having this crazy lineup, they're now looking like the Yankees with Maggs, Guillen, Granderson, Sheffield, Renteria...
They'll sure be a fun team to watch next season!

I like the trade, only because it answers who'll be our starting SS. I see Renteria scored 100 runs in both '05 and '06 with the Bosox and Braves and last season was hitting .330-something in an injury-shortened season. Where is he going to hit in the order? I've gotta believe he hits ahead of Pudge. Maybe something like this?
Granderson CF
Polanco 2B
Maggs RF
Sheff DH
Guillen 1B
Renteria SS
Thames/Perez/Whoever LF
Pudge C
Inge 3B

I was thinking the same lineup but with Maggs and Sheff switched around.

I said this in the CE forum too, but my initial reaction is the same as the Shef trade a year ago, which is kind of reserved, but it's nice to acquire a proven player. However, I wish that more of our talent was homegrown. I was kind of excited to see Jurrjens develop. But 'Double-D' has made far more brilliant moves than questionable ones, so there's some optimism.
I can already hear Jim Rome's take on it (imagine this in his voice): "I know the 1997 Marlins won the World Series, but everyone's also 10 years older. Who's next in line? Bobby Bonilla? Devon White? I mean, c'mon Dombrowski, you built the '03 Marlins, too, didn't you? Get Beckett. Or Cabrera. Or Brad Penny. Hell, bail Ugie Urbina out of jail and invite him to spring training. You have bullpen needs too, don't you? I would just hate to see such a triumphantly redemptive story as the Tigers completely implode because Rob Nen wasn't closing out games like he used to. Or because Darren Daulton wasn't mashing like he did back in '92."

I can see why it was done, especially with Gorkys, but did we really need to give up Jair? I really liked the guy. Then again, I like Edgar Renteria. I know I was skeptical about Sheffield too (though not because of who we traded...more or less because of Sheff's attitude, though he wasn't half the problem I thought he'd be), but couldn't we have given up Jordan Tata and a Minor League reliever (the Braves are absolutely desperate for relief pitching since Joey Devine hasn't exactly panned out).

I was looking over his stats, and something impressive that I never noticed- he will get his 2,000th hit before his 33rd birthday. That's only about 150 or so behind Derek Jeter's pace. Talk about under the radar!

In light of this trade, I've heard sportstalk radio discuss moving Granderson down to the bottom part of the order. So far, Grandy has proven to be outstanding against right-handed pitching, but brutal against southpaws (2007 against LHP: BA .160, OBP .225) -- not what you want in an everyday lead-off hitter. Besides, he has always been projected as a #3 hitter anyways.
Renteria has been consistent against both righties and lefties (2007 against RHP: BA .323, OBP .376 ; against LHP: BA .349, OBP .415).
I could see something like this, especially against LHP:
Renteria SS
Polanco 2B
Ordonez RF
Sheffield DH
Guillen 1B
Granderson CF
Pudge C
Platoon LF
Inge 3B

I was a little disappointed with trading Jurrjens, too. But to get what you need . . .
I've been trying to gauge down here (Southwestern Ohio) if there'd be any interest in bringing the Mayor back to the Reds. Not really seeing what Reds fans would be willing to give up, just to see if he is still beloved. Reaction has been lukewarm thus far. The issues Casey had in Detroit were very much his issues in Cincy.

Let's hope that Renteria does better in the AL than he did in his last tour of duty.

Wow. I don't know if I like this deal. I think Jurrjens is going to be a good pitcher. Phew.
This is the lineup I see as well.

This deal must have been going on for weeks before the post season ended for it to happen this fast.
In truth, I wouldn't mind seeing Camron Maybin get traded. I think he will be the next super-dud.

I would like to give both DD and most MLB scouts the benefit of doubt on Maybin. Every team in MLB can't be wrong about Maybin, can they?
I really did not like the way the Tigers handled him this year. Maybin goes off in spring training batting like .400. The Tigers go with the he is not ready and send him down to single A (why not AA?). Then the Tigers say he might be up at September call ups, if at all, but not before then. The season wears on and the Tigers kind of grasping for a "spark" boot Monroe and call Maybin up. Maybin did not preform well, looking overwhelmed in the OF and overmatched at the dish.
Perhaps had he been called up earlier, when the Tigers were not looking for a "spark". There would of been less preasure on him while he was getting his feet wet. Surely a 8-2 game against KC in May would be a little easier for the fellow to work through those butterflies. Then a 2-1 game vs the Yankees in August. Consider, Maybin did go 4 for 15 (.267 AVG) with 2 doubles and 1 HR in the frist 4 games he played. The other thing about those first 4 games....all losses. It might be natural to squeeze it a little when the team is looking to you to provide a "spark", you do reasonably well and the team still loses. So, I will give him a pass on this year.
However, the next time he's with the big club he better not look so clueless in the OF. I don't care if he's gotta play 3 innings per game at each OF position in the minors. The routes he took to balls in the OF were little league at times. Regardless of the struggles at the plate the guy needs to play some D in the CoPa OF.
Well, at least this assures us that the Tiger's are out of the A-Rod follies about to screw up the offseason
