Did the 8 day layoff between the final game of the NLCS & the 1st game of the World Series hurt them? How can such a hot team (winning 21 of 22 games) all of a sudden come to a screeching , cold stop?

I'll say it simply:yes

I'd have to agree with psbaseballfan27.

Perhaps managers in similar situations in the future should schedule mandatory simulated games, or workouts, or whatever... anything to keep their team in the groove.

That's the whole thing though. Clint Hurdle did hold simulated games for his guys to play in.

I think Brad Hawpe would say yes, it was too much time off.

Didn't we already hear this question like a zillion times already?

Maybe you did. I obviously haven't, or I wouldn't have asked.

Absolutely, it hurt. This is my becoming my huge gripe about the World Series now. When a team finishes their LCS early, they have to wait and twiddle their thumbs just so their opponent can finish up. If it wasn't for the extra off days in the ALCS, I don't think the Red Sox would be as sharp as they were. Hey, it's the truth.

This same thing bit the Tigers last year, and now it bit the Rockies. If I find out Bud Selig had a big part in this...

I'm sure Fox is as much to blame as Selig, who gets targeted for far more than he is actually responsible for. But if he is to blame, I'll let him know you're after him.

Setting the schedule in advance is proving to be a detriment. It killed the tremendous momentum the Rockies had. I'm not going to go so far as to say it would have been a different result, but there's a lot to be said for keeping it going when you're on a roll.

Surely you jest.

In the papers, on TV, in current events, post game and pregame interviews with Hurdle and Rockies players.

Nope, sorry. I don't live in front of a computer or tv.

... We'll never know, for sure, if it hurt.
What we do know, it didn't help.

I certainly think the layoff hurt them.
They were so hot going into the WS. I knew the layoff would hurt them.
I was hoping the Indians would have put that last nail into the BoSox coffin.
Alas, that never came.

Your a lucky man then. McCarver wore it out, ESPN and other sports talk wore it out, reporters interviewing Hurdle and his players wore it out, in Denver here the local news and sports talk wore it out, local papers and others on the net wore it out. Heck even the local sports anchors that hardly mention the Rockies during the year harped on about the 8 day lay off.

I bet Hurdle still hears the question in his nightmares.

Thing is that it is a question that there is no correct answer to. You don't know for sure before the WS and you sure as heck don't want to use it as an excuse after being swept.

amen...the schedule is too long..reduce it..like to 154 games, maybe less..fix the playoffs..i hate seeing the series going to almost november..a lot of cities have to deal with cold weather..especially at NIGHT...

and yeah, the layoff..probably derailed the rockies....it sure didn't help the Tigers in 2006, either...god bless uncle BUD!!!

It had to have, I think once they were trounced in game 1 13-1 they kind of just lost all confidence. The Colorado pitching was terrible though, they had something like a 7.98 ERA in the series right?

They should start the next series immidiately (1 day off) after the both teams make it to the next round. Rockies would of won!

umm, not sure they would have won

Though they might not have been swept. I think Boston would have won the series one way or another, but it should have been more competitive. Unfortunately, Colorado had a long layoff when they were hot, and they went against a Boston team that was rested but still hot. Rust vs. Rest? 2 days off is rest. 8 is not.

Like in 2001. After the layoff, everyone came back flat. Well, the Yankees didn't, but that's not quite the same.

(I also think Beckett was getting calls that Francis wasn't. It kind of bugs me, since I see Beckett getting generous calls all the time, and he's an amazing pitcher who DOESN'T need the help.)

Congratulations to the Red Sox. It should have been a better series. The Rockies fan in me apologizes for that.

It's all Cleveland's fault. If the Indians had won Game 5 of the ALCS, they would have gone into the World Series about as rusty as the Rockies, and we would have had a more competitive series.

I blame it all on Jamey Carroll. If he would have had one more bean for breakfast he would have hit a HR to tie up game 4 the Rockies would have went on to win game 4 and the WS.

I blame it on Josh Beckett.

If he were less awesome, Boston wouldn't have won.

The Rockies set a fielding % record this year and the Red Sox even out D'ed them. Julio Lugo made 2 outstanding plays in 1 game with that force at 3rd that Lowell dug outta the dirt and then he climbed the ladder to snag that line drive. Ellsbury makes that nice catch in left of Jamey Carrolls drive while are corner outfielders Holliday( lets that one get by him that go's to the wall) and Hawpe ( go's into a slide and misses that fly) both had misplays.

Then in the Indian series Coco made that great game ending catch while the Rockies IMO don't have 1 outfielder that would have came close to that ball. Not even Sullivan who I think is the best we have on a ball over his head.

It defently did hurt. Is there really any question about it.

Having that many days off is the worst thing that could happen to a team that was as hot as the Rockies was.

But then again the Red Sox did have a great season and they do desolve it.
