I was wondering if any team had ever swept the play offs only to be swept in the world series

It hasn't happened since the wild card added an extra round to the playoffs. Prior to the wild card, it happened once.
In 1990, Oakland swept Boston in four games, then the A's were swept in the World Series by Cincinnati.
