In a day and age where pitching rules the roost, the Legends are playing the smart card and going after the best one in what may be the richest draft class in the short history of DMCKL baseball.

Young hurler Tom Seaver is about to sign a max rookie contract, expected to be worth $13.5 mil over 6 years, becoming the richest rookie in DMCKL history. Seaver, out of USC, is expected to start immediately for the team.

Legends manager Gene Mauch: "A pitcher like this doesn't come around very often. We'd be fortunate to get him after the season we just had."

The Legends own the first pick in this year's draft via trade with the Stingers.

Seaver would join Fergie Jenkins and Luis Tiant spearheading a rock-solid pitching staff that finished 2nd in the league in ERA last season, helping the Legends to their first division title since the DMCKL's inception in 1961. The Legends ended a 4-year streak by the Skipjacks.

Critics say that heat may be on the abrasive Mauch to get past the first round of the playoffs, something the Legends have yet to accomplish.

"Pitching and defense is an easy formula," says Mauch. "You play hard, you play right, and you'll force your opponent to make mistakes. We have to start taking more advantage of the opportunities given us. We do that and you'll see us where we should be at the end."

Since Seaver going to the Legends appears to be a foregone conclusion, the Gold Sox front office announces that they are "very intrigued" by the choice that awaits them. On the one hand, they have young slugging outfielder Reginald Martinez "Reggie" Jackson, from Oakland by way of Arizona State, where he will be declaring for the draft after his sophomore year. One the other hand, they have catcher Johnny Bench out of Binger High School in Oklahoma, who has been drawing attention from the likes of former ML great Ted Williams, who has already pronounced him a sure-fire Hall of Famer. Jackson is not without his share of accolades, not a few of which come from himself. A two-sport star at ASU and the son of a former Negro Leaguer, Jackson is sure to go high in this draft, as is Bench. Both are excellent players, and either one could be a #1 overall choice in a weaker year.

Other factors in the Gold Sox decision include 1964 third-round pick Randy Hundley, who has been waiting patiently for the starting catcher job, and may find himself without one a year from now if the Gold Sox go with Bench. The Gold Sox also recently acquired outfielder Tony Gonzalez from the Redbirds. Gonzalez played for the current Gold Sox owner when he controlled the now-defunct Philadelphia Phillies franchise, and is expected to play a major role in the upcoming season. Add in Ron Swoboda and Pete Ward, and there may not be room in the Gold Sox outfield for Jackson.

It is no secret that if USC's Tom Seaver lasts past the Legends at #1, the Gold Sox will snatch him up faster than a swarm of piranhas on a raw hamburger. That scenario is, however, very unlikely. Rumor has it that a decision has not yet been made in the Gold Sox camp. Both men scored within .02 of each other on the Gold Sox' new and improved draft value scale, which ranges from zero to 60, and both men play positions that do not need filling for the Gold Sox in the upcoming seasons, so word has it that the decision may come down to something as simple as a coin flip.

P.S. I'll probably leave the draft after I make my pick. My school has a football game, and we're actually sort of decent this year.

--With the mystery of the first pick apparently behind us the prognosticators turn their attention to the Gold Sox, then a pair of Redbird selections. Many scouts consider Johnny Bench to be the best catching prospect they've ever seen. Bench has a rifle arm, is exceptionally athletic behind the plate and has power that plays anywhere. Scouts are also high on Reggie Jackson. Jackson may be the best power speed combo to come along since Willie Mays, although he is a little raw defensively and may end up in RF rather than CF. Scouts also can't say enough about the sweet swing of Rod Carew. The young IF is destined for multiple batting titles if half the buzz is true.
--Those three highlight a great group of prospects, several of whom look polished enough to contribute immediately. The next generation of CKL stars look to make their first impression tonight.

It is generally accepted that the Legends will take Tom Seaver with the #1 pick. Let me lay all the speculation to rest. With the number one pick, the Legends DO take:

30863

As JW so skillfully put it above, Legends management feels that Seaver is the best young pitcher to come along yet in the CKL's formative years, and will be using him immediately in this year's rotation. Together with Luis Tiant, Fergie Jenkins and Tommy John, the Legends feel they have the staff to go all the way this season!:clapping :gt

Good luck to everyone else in tonight's draft.

--Dan, the Gold Sox may pick now. You've got till 805 EST. Everyone please pick as qucikly as possible when your turn comes around. The full 5 minutes for each pick would have us going 3 hours for tonight's 3 rounds. Less would be better:crossfingers: .

The Gold Sox had a very tough choice going into this draft, which was made even harder by the Legends taking the clear-cut #1 guy, Tom Seaver. Management was divided on who to select, even up to just minutes before the Legends made their pick.

We have, however, come to a decision.

With the #2 overall pick in the 1967 Rookie Draft, the EB Gold Sox select:

Johnny Bench, C, Binger High School, Binger, OK

--Was that your man Lew?

Sure was. I had the picture all picked out to post! IMHO, he was also the best player left. But the fact you would've taken Bench over Seaver (mentioned earlier) led me to believe that you were looking for a catcher, and he was no doubt the best available, excluding Bench.

-A little surprised by your selection. There seems to be a significantly better 3B on the board, although Radar pays off a little quicker.

I thought about Nettles, and it was between him and Rader. But as you note, Rader pays off immediately (albeit as a backup the first year), and actually has a better OPS+ than Nettles every year until 1971. I needed a backup for next season, and then expect to be moving whichever one I took, so I needed the short term production more this time.

1) Redbirds: Two future Hall of Famer and a future CYA winner (if he can be re-signed), plus a 1B with a few years as a serious power hitter and a decent backup catcher. Carew and Marshall will make significant contributions this year and Carew and Jackson could be leading a contender by 1969.
2) Legends: Land the best SP of his generation, who will contribute immediately, and arguably the best LH reliever of his generation, who also contributes immediately. Amos Otis may be the best CF of the first half of the 70s, although his best years are post-free agent eliguibilty and expansion. Rudi, Nelson and Hermann all have at least a few years of solid contribution.
3) Skipjacks: Got here without high picks, gaining good value all 4 times. Nettles is a solid starter 3 years before FA eligibility and would be a great 5 year sign when he gets there. Fosse gives an All Star and 2 solid starter years behind the plate before FA, Friselaand Leonhard both have several nice seasons out of the pen.
---------------
4) Gold Sox: Johnny Bench provides 5 great years (2 MVP) before free agent eligibility and would be a great re-sign on a 5 year deal. Not another pick till the 4th round, but Torrez might help a little.
5) Hard Cider: Mac always finds the hidden gems, even if their value is sometimes in small does. Jim Hardin and Cisco Carlos are both terrific out of the pen this year and Hardin has a nice year as a SP in 68. Bob Moose has several good years and Alan Foster is a nice arm for the end of the 3rd round.
6) Shoeless Joes: Gary Nolan is a top pitcher right away and very good, if injury prone, for all 6 pre-free agency seasons with some re-sign vakue. Ken Boswell has several years as a solid platoon option in the IF and Cito Gaston flukes into an All Star year in the OF.
7) Gamblers: Koosman provides 5 very good seasons in the rotation and has some re-sign value. Stoneman has some years as a solid starter and Waslewski helps out right away.
8) Knights: my expectations were low, but Manny Sanguillen was the guy I wanted. He'll be a good starting catcher for me from 69-72 and has soem re-sign value. Ron Bryant is a verrry long term project, but if he makes it through the expansion draft he'll give me one outstanding year in the rotation - 1972 or bust!.
9) Diablos: Pat Dobson isn't a very sexy 1st rounder, but he is a solid reliever for 3 years and a solid starter for 3 more. Rickey Clark helps immediately as a 5th starter/long releiver. George Stone has some decent seasons.
10) Badgers: Didn't have a pick til the third round, but got decent value there in Joe Neikro. Neikro is decent several years prior to FA and could be a real steal if re-signed.
11) Stingers: Also no pick til the third. The original A-Rod provides a slick glove, but only one year as an above average hitter. Tony Pierce is a solid lefty arm out of the pen, providing some immediate value.
12) Cannons: yet another team who didn't have a pick until the 3rd round. The Cannons didn't show for that pick and are still looking to get their first choice in.

I would've grabbed him for you if he was still available when your turn came in round two, Scott. He was actually one of the best pitchers available in this draft.

Mark, in your handicapping you forgot to consider that I also got Mike Cuellar as a result of this draft, too, returning the Gamblers' first rounder to Kyle for his pick back. So that first round netted me Seaver, Cuellar, Lyle, Rader (perhaps a mistake, but fit my needs better right now than Nettles did) and Otis, with the second round bringing Nelson and Rudi.

-Also, in trading Cuellar, I got my pick back which I was trying to trade up for. Pap said his needs were long term second base, and pitching, so I assumed Jackson would fall to five. Sadly, he didn't but Koosman and Cuellar are basically a wash, with Cuellar sticking with the Legends down the stretch. The trade does give me some cap relief, and hopefully allow the Gamblers to sign a Premium FA. I also lost a 2nd pick, but I think it balances out with the cap relief.

--Right now I've only identified 4 players who qualify as "premium free agent" for the live auction. Willie Stargell and Jim Fregosi are the guys who figure to break the bank. Mike McCormick was the 1967 NL CYA wiiner, although it perhaps wasn't the greatest selection the writers ever made. Willie Davis is a decent CF option for the next 2 years with some very good years after that. Suggestions for other PFA are welcome, but as of now it will be a quick one and then on to the secondary auction.

Very decent pick with what amounts to the 42nd pick, Scott. I'm probably done, even if no one takes the final player on my list, since he's quite a long term project too and I'm already loaded at that position. I'll see what happens.

catcher24
10-28-2007, 11:57 AM
Since you have the game, Ed, check out how many players there are by position (that you need to fill) and maybe look at other owners' rosters to see how much bidding might take place for a particular player (that is, how many other owners need to fill the same position!).

I personally think that if you see a rookie who may help you, go ahead and draft him. It only costs 250K off your cap, and if he doesn't play in the majors during the season, he's still 250K next season, and even the third season if he doesn't play the first two. After the third season his salary will double per the rules, but even then he's only 500K if he hasn't played in the bigs. If you decide later that you can't really use him, you just release him and save his salary for the next season.

One caveat here - we'll be having the expansion after 1968, so you might lose some of those guys in the expansion draft. If they can't help you much before then, and aren't worth protecting, I personally wouldn't take them under those circumstances.
Hope that helps.

leecemark
10-28-2007, 02:39 PM
--That had been my thought for several seasons now, Lew, but I've changed my mind somewhat on that. The more players you expose in the expansion draft the more you'll have a chance to pull back. If a forward looking new owner claims a long term prospect maybe that saves you your 5th starter, middle releiver or a good bench player. If they take the guy who has moderate value right away then maybe you get to hang on to your prospect.
--Of course, it depends on your immediate needs. The Badgers have alot of holes to fill for 67. I don't really need anybody. If I don't sign one of the big ticket guys I don't even want any of the remaining riffraff. Any warm, minimum wage body would do to round out the 40 man.

I'm actually happy with the way the draft turned out for me (thanks, Mark!). I was terribly disappointed with getting the 8th pick (not least because it meant I lost both my playoff spot and Willie Stargell); there were seven clear winners in this draft, in my book, who all went before my spot. Dobson was my next choice, but there was a clear dropoff after Lyle. Sanguillen's probably more valuable, but pitchers are always hard to come by, and I was worried I might not get anything out of Sanguillen before losing him in the expansion draft.

However, George Stone gives three pretty decent years as a starting pitcher, and Rickey Clark jumps right into my rotation as a rookie, which isn't too bad (although what he does after that is too bad). Better than I was hoping for with the second and third round picks.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, Mark. As you know, I've been taking as many rookies as I can for several drafts, and hanging onto them until they become useful - either as a player, or as a trade inclusion. And I do plan on going into the expansion draft (or at least the off season - who knows what might develop with trades? ) with as full a roster as possible. Heck, if I can go in with all 40 players signed for 1969, I figure it's a big advantage. Of course, what happens in the expansion draft will depend on the owners and what they hope to accomplish - build for the future, or win as soon as possible. I think you'll find both among our four new owners, and it will depend on who takes your player whether they'll go after your decent fourth starter or your outfielder who doesn't contribute until 1971. So basically it's a crap shoot any way you look at it - just have as many bodies as possible going into the off season!

An excellent strategy, Mark. One I generally follow myself. Had I made my two trades earlier, I would've probably taken one or two more rookies, but at the time my roster was full, or nearly so and I couldn't get what I need for 1967 in the rookie draft. Those extras always come in handy, whether contributing for a season or two, as add ins in a trade, or in this case with expansion looming on the horizon.
