There's one BIG thing that might put a kibosh on this idea. Since the field of the coliseum was lowered and additional permanent seating was added, there's a LOT less room to put in a diamond.
You can see in this photo the new cream-colored seating installed in the 90s:

I don't see how they could hope to have a LF line any longer than 200 ft, if that much. And I don't see how MLB, even for an exhibition, would allow this.

All the more fun. :D
Face it, when was Coliseum baseball ever normal?
I still want to see it happen.

Eric Pastore at digitalballparks.com did a pretty good job a couple of years ago similating baseball at the Coliseum by superimposing a diamond on current day photos of the place.

This thread got me thinking about when the Cardinals were putting together plans to build Busch III, they were trying to figure out the best way to transition from Busch II to Busch III. They weren't sure if they wanted to...
1) just tear down Busch II after a season and have the Cardinals play in a converted Edward Jones Dome where the Rams play.
2) partially tear down Busch II in thw way they did it at Cinergy Field and build the new stadium with the partial Busch II.
3) build 75% of Busch III and then in the offseason tear down Busch II and quickly build the remaining 25%.
Of course the Cardinals decided on option 3, which I think was the best choice. But it always made me think what it would have been like if they played 2 seasons at the Edward Jones Dome. So I did a couple of diagrams and a photoshop image of what it would have looked like. The layout looks like Dolphins Stadium and the inside reminds me of the Metrodome, but flipped.

Uh, oh.
If the Brooklynites get wind of this, they may see hint of the Dodgers at Rosevelt Stadium and a chance for the Dodgers to return to a 100,000 seat New Ebbets Field!
It's a cool idea.
It'd be interesting to see what the cost would be to make the stadium baseball ready.
For that matter, if anyone has any information on the process and cost of turning the stadium into a motorcross track or monster truck event I'd be interested to hear.

That would be something interesting to see. Football stadiums having ballgames always seem to disturb me. You just cannot remove your mindset thinking, "THIS IS A BASEBALL FIELD" like when you go to Dolphins Stadium to see the Marlins. It just feels wierd. Its like the stadium is saying, "This place was built for football, but hey, we can try to have baseball"
Was looking at the old stadium layouts. Would be interesting to see the Patriots play an exhabition football game at Fenway. Thats if the Red Sox management would go for it.

Red Sox or White Sox?
Actually, White Sox would make good sense, given that the 1959 World Series between the Dodgers and White Sox at the Coliseum set the all-time postseason game record of 92,206 in Game 5.

They could probably angle home plate a little differently and get the left field line close to where it had been 1958-61. Keeping homeplate in the same spot were it was, however, might be a little more challenging.

Awesome news!
To the make the event even bigger, they would have to make it a game vs. the Giants or a juicy AL Interleague opponent.
Looking at the Dodgers tentative 2008 schedule, none of the AL teams really jump out at you except the one visiting LA June 24-26, that being the Pale Hose. Couldn't ask for a better set-up than that with a 1959 World Series replay.
The Dodgers would draw their typical 50,000 crowd (I would hope the season ticket holders wouldn't mind the change for one day for history's sake) and then they could get 42-43,000 others to show up. I would fly out to LA just to be part of that.
Only problem I think is the renovations that they did by getting rid of the running track and lowering the floor. I used to be a big track fan and loved the Coliseum for it. With those seats now there instead of empty space (and a 250-foot fence), I shudder to think what the LF line would be. They would just have to erect a higher screen than they did the first time I guess, although the left fielder would be very close to the shortstop.

Couldn't they just put home plate by one of the end zones and have the batter face the arches? I know it's not the way they had it originally, but at least you'll have symmetrical distances, and not the extreme lopsideness that it seems would arise...

Color Photo is from the present. A lot of things have stayed the same over 49 years with a few changes, the LA Swimming Stadium in the lower right hand corner and the 3-story building outside of the west endzone that's now been enlargened. There was no running track there in 1959, but there was also no additional band of seating that occupies where the running track would have been.

Invasion of Sox fans is right. Ask any O's fans. You guys (and Cubs fans, and Steeler fans for football) are like locusts. But hey, that's part of the spoils of being World Champs, I guess. In Boston's case, it makes up for lost time.

Wow, so we face the Dodgers at the LA Coliseum (230' line or so), then halfway across the globe to Japan to face two NPB teams, then 2 real games a week before the season is supposed to start, then back to west coast.

I admit, I do have something of a fascination with baseball at the Coliseum, not because it was the best ballpark, but rather quite the opposite--because it was probably the worst ballpark ever in modern baseball history. In other words, it was so bad, you couldn't help but like it regardless. Sort of like the movie "Plan 9 from Outer Space" (a good analogy for Tinseltown).
Of course, baseball at the LA Coliseum occurred long before I was born, so I've only had a chance to read about it and see the photos. Playing baseball there again, even if only for one game, will bring a piece of history I never experienced into my own life. It reminds me of how growing up I loved the movie "The Right Stuff" and was fascinated about the early US astronauts, even though it was long before I was born. Then, when I was living in Florida, I had a chance to see the space shuttle with John Glenn blast into space, and it allowed me to sort of capture the past I previously only knew secondhand personally.
If only this could happen more places. The problem is, almost all of the former major league ballparks have long since been demolished. In Birmingham, I know they hold the Rickwood Classic, where they play one game a year at Rickwood Field, their old ballpark.

Me too. It's fascinating how the foul areas are so different on each side of the field. I've always wondered why they decided to put home plate where they did, instead of orienting it so that the batter was looking directly at the arched facade on the other side of the coliseum, even though it would have meant a more "squarish" field...
...but then I realized that such a field would invoke memories of the Polo Grounds, of all places!!!!!
Still, wasn't there anything they could have done to make the foul areas more equal?
while they were at it why not play a game at the minor league park in Brooklyn in 07? As long as they are on this 50th anniversary kick go all the way with it.

I am still really curious about how they are going to pull this off with the usable field area so much narrower than it was in 1961. I can't imagine them making any drastic changes to the permanent seating for one exhibition game. We may just witness the first over-the-wall bunt homer...or...the first shortstop crashing into the OF wall going back on a routine pop-up.

Who knows, MLB might broadcast it for free on MLB.com, with it being an exhibition (right?) and all. If your not, I MAY be able to get you a digital copy that I could email to you... And there are ways to watch MLB games online for free, although I'm sure on the legality of them.

An exhibition game is the same, by any other name.
It would be a terrific idea though to play the inter-league series with the ChiSox at the Coliseum. have them wear the 59 uniforms. I know there's not much difference in the Dodgers, but make the players wear the pants no lower the mid-calf, with stirrup socks and sani's.

http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd177/CBNO-AB/Dodgers-50th.jpg
The smallest arc is 200' and every arc after that is 100' farther. As far as I know, the rows of tan colored seats closest to the field are the new seats installed since '61.

That's very cool.
However, I'm pretty sure your diamond is not accurate to scale. The Coliseum field is 308 ft. wide at midfield, however, if you use your diamond (90 ft between bases) as a guide, it looks to be only a little over 200 ft, which it isn't. Can you re-do it using the 308 ft barometer?
Power Wally
11-23-2007, 07:03 PM
I'm going to stand with the scale I created in the first place. I used the "100ft" scale marker that you see in the lower left hand corner, which was provided in Google Earth image. It happens to match the scale of the flag football field, considering that field appears to be 50 yards long, not counting the 10 yards deep end zones. If you look closely, you can see the 5 15 25 15 5 marked on the field.
I got this paragraph from the LA Coliseum website:
FIELD DIMENSIONS: East to West --- 680 ft. 2 in., North to South --- 324 ft. 2 in., Width of Field (with track) --- 304 ft. 8 in.
The track does not show in my picture, but it is my guess that part of it was covered with the new seats after the '84 Olympics. The E-W (680ft. 2in) and N-S (324ft. 2in) numbers fit my scale if the tan colored seats closest to the field are ignored. I believe the dimensions listed on their website are pre 1994.

I'm going to take a wild guess that they'll play by the rules that (horrible person) Walter O'Malley wanted originally, that anything over the high fence will be a ground rule double, and anything over a 2nd fence 50' farther back will be a home run. I don't know if they'll actually erect the high fences, but maybe they'll consider anything past a certain walkway a homer, and anything before it a ground rule single.
It's the only way to make this not completely ridiculous. I highly doubt we'll see a lefty pitcher in the games.

LOS ANGELES -- When the Dodgers moved out of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and into Dodger Stadium in 1962 it was believed that the Coliseum -- constructed in the the 1920s for football and track and field -- would never again host another baseball game.
Forty-six years later, the Dodgers will return to the Coliseum one more time to play an exhibition game with the world champion Boston Red Sox as part of the organization's 50th anniversary celebration of its move to Los Angeles. Executives from the Dodgers and Red Sox joined local politicians and former players at a news conference, hosted by legendary broadcaster Vin Scully at the Coliseum on Monday to announce the event.
"It's going to be so much fun next March 29," said Dodgers chairman Frank McCourt. "There's already a great buzz about it. It's just a pleasure. I think Senator Mark Ridley Thomas had a great idea and we just jumped on the opportunity. It's going to be a special, special night here in LA, not only to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the team's arrival in LA, but the proceeds are going to go to ThinkCure, our new official charity."
It's estimated that the Dodgers will spend around $250,000 to build temporary dugouts for the game as well as erect a longer and larger metal curtain in left field, dubbed the "Chinese curtain" from 1958-61 when the Dodgers called the Coliseum home. The curtain was created to prevent pop flies from becoming home runs because the dimensions of the Coliseum made left field 251 feet away from home plate. New Dodgers manager Joe Torre remembers being enticed by the curtain when he played in the Coliseum in 1961 as a member of the Milwaukee Braves.
"You run out of that tunnel behind home plate and you look up at that screen and you say, 'Oh my Lord, this looks like its pretty easy,'" recalled Torre about his only series at the Coliseum. "I've never been a pull hitter, but I tried being a pull hitter that weekend and I think I got one single that skimmed down the fence -- and I think it was off [Sandy] Koufax, but it certainly didn't hurt anybody."
Another former player with ties to the Coliseum is former Dodgers great Maury Wills, who, in his 1959 rookie season, helped the team win the World Series.
"I guess I remember looking up one time at the crowd and it was 90-something thousand people," recalls Wills. "I swore I'd never do that again and just concentrate on the field, because that would unnerve you."
"I think that's going to be fun," said McCourt. "Both for people who were here to experience Dodger baseball at the Coliseum. I think it will bring back fond memories and those who only heard about it, they will get to experience for themselves as well and I think that will be great."
Another person who thinks the exhibition game will be great is Red Sox chairman Tom Werner, who was a longtime Dodgers season ticket holder when he lived in Los Angeles for 30 years and made a name for himself as as a successful television producer of such shows as "The Cosby Show," "Roseanne" and "A Different World."
"This is a great year for the Dodgers," said Werner. "The Dodgers, as you know, are a historic franchise -- as important as any franchise in baseball, including the Red Sox -- and for Frank and Jamie to celebrate the 50th anniversary by playing in the Coliseum is great."
The Dodgers will be donating net proceeds from the game to their official charity, ThinkCure. Launched in July by the Dodgers, the McCourt family, City of Hope and Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, ThinkCure is dedicated to raising funds for critical cancer research and ultimately finding a cure for cancer. The non-profit organization follows in the footsteps of The Jimmy Fund, which was started in 1948 and is one of the most enduring and successful charities of its kind and is supported by the Red Sox. The McCourt family has been associated with The Jimmy Fund since its inception when Frank McCourt's grandfather, Francis McCourt, was a part owner of the Boston Braves.
The game at the Coliseum will be sandwiched between games with the Red Sox on March 28 and 30 at Dodger Stadium. Ticket information for all three games will be announced at a later date.
"This will be dynamite, it really will," said Torre. "Just to know the history of the Dodgers coming out here, their being in Brooklyn for so many years and to have the good fortune of playing the Red Sox. I'm sort of used to playing the Red Sox for the last 12 years and to have the world champs come out here to commemorate that great date and that great event, I think is very special and I expect to see a few people in this ballpark."

Wow, so we face the Dodgers at the LA Coliseum (230' line or so), then halfway across the globe to Japan to face two NPB teams, then 2 real games a week before the season is supposed to start, then back to west coast.
We are so so so screwed.
When the Yankees played in Japan to open the season there was a lag when the first started, even with a few days off. So chances are there will an even bigger Lag after trips to the Far East and the West coast! Maybe the Redsox can play the Toyko Giants in late semptember early October!!
Anyway, I really don't see how they are going to fit a baseball field into the Coloseum. I think it real cool, but don't see how they are going to do it with those new seats.

What's that gray rectangle on the field supposed to be? Since they're not selling tickets for the entire stadium, it has to be some kind of structure that would block the view - and it can't be the batter's eye because it's in (ultra-deep) right field.

1). it won't make that much of a difference, since moving it to the right or left will only cause something else to go out of whack.
2). This is the same setup that the Coliseum had in the 50s and 60s when the Dodgers called it home.

According to the article at mlb.com, left field will only be 200 feet. This is because the field is some 88 feet "thinner" than it was back when the dodgers last played there in 1961.
"Our goal is to have the field look just like it did when people came here in 1958, and they'll be able to say, 'That's how it was,'" said Dodgers vice president of stadium operations Lon Rosenberg. "The biggest challenge that we have is that the Coliseum has lost 88 feet in diameter since we last played here because they took out the warning track, so we have to make some slight adjustments. We have 200 feet down the left-field line instead of 250, so we have adjusted the screen from 42 feet to 62 feet."

Left field is literally the same distance as the softball field in my neighborhood growing up where we would play sandlot games. The left field fence was a grove of trees 200 feet away. As a kid I loved feeling like a big league slugger launching balls in there.

Thats what they did at florida state to make up for the small right field. The baseball coach always bitches about people who hit 15 plus homeruns before they put the fence in because it wasn't that hard to hit a homer.

And since there's some room between the backstop and the seats, I wonder if they'll installl one or two rows of "premium" seats directly behind the plate... to raise extra money for charity, of course...

Insane! What a crowd!
And after all that, only a 7-4 score. Hmm, perhaps the Dodgers might think of moving back to the Coliseum after all....think of all the revenue they could get out of that! :)
I like how they duplicated the infield as it used to be, down to the fungo circles and the dirt coaches boxes.

No, I didn't go to the game, but by looking at the pics, it looked very interesting. It was shades of my proposed "Are You Kidding Me? Field" dimensions. Of course, the Coliseum isn't made for baseball, but many things went on in this game.
The Dodgers used a five-man infield, even though Andrew Jones is an outfielder, he played just outside of the second base bag. It was kinda funny to hear that he got the throw from Martin to tag out the runner.
I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't mind baseball, at any level, to be played at the Coliseum more often. It fits into the "it's so bad that it's good" category. :dance

I agree, it's so quirky that it makes the game more fun to watch. Obviously this was more than a little quirky, but I think that's something missing from baseball today; crazy field dimmensions (really deep or really short) and angles that cause strange hops in addition to things like monuments in the field of play. It would be fun to see it come back at least a little bit :cap:

Last night was amazing, 115,000 showed up for a good cause. It was the most memorable exhibition game I've ever been to, and by far the best batting practice that I've witnessed. The left field fence was ridiculous, but obviously made a great fan experience. I've never seen so many grown adults with gloves at a ballgame. David Ortiz put on the best show during batting practice. He took advantage of the small porch in left with a few opposite field bombs, but for the most part he was hitting his home runs to right field, causing all the kids to run wild in the open space behind the right field fence. Vin Scully was honored before the game. It was nice to see how much Dodgers fans truly respect the legendary announcer. I took about 200 pics of the event until the camera battery died. I'll post them throughout the day.

Oh, I did get tired after awhile. My legs were a little sore this morning from climbing all of those steps.
And it was very cool seeing 115,000 fans at the game. A lot of Boston fans were at the game too. They were good sports.

ask about what will happen to the flags that were hung around the ballpark as posted in some of the pics but it appears that many of them were taken down by fans during the game as shown in this video here (http://www.youtube.com/v/W0XY_3M_7_U)
So I guess we'll be seeing some on Ebay soon.

Do you have a camera that only uses rechargeable batteries? I've got a Canon Powershot A710IS, which uses two regular alkaline AA batteries - it's a bitch to have to keep replenishing them, but as long as I've got a supply with me I'm set, so I'm cool with that.

The rechargables can be as bad when it comes to powering cameras, especially if you use the LCD screen a lot...they pay for themselves though in that you get them back to full power in six hours but still require you to take a spare pair along just in case.

I brought a camera that has rechargeable batteries. I regret not bringing my second camera that has regular batteries. The zoom is much better too but it's pretty big compared to the camera we brought so we decided to leave it in the car.

It sure covered up the normal burgandy and gold USC colors, that's for sure.

Just a sea of blue and white to me, little to no other colors seen...then again when you get that large of a crowd it all blends together quite nicely

Interesting that in 1958, when the Dodgers first moved to LA, average attendance was only 23,968. By 1950s standards, that was pretty darn good, and may have actually lead the league. Nonetheless, 23,000 in a 90,000 seat stadium would still have looked pretty empty, I would imagine.
