Not so much trivia, not really at all, but I saw David Ortiz get hit by Manny's ground ball to shortstop the other night and I started thinking. When would it benefit the team batting for the runner to get hit by a batted ball?
1. Runners on first and second, one out, the batter hits a routine grounder to short. The runner leaving second is hit by the batted ball and is out, ball is dead. The almost guaranteed double play is averted, plus the batter gets credit for a hit.
2. One out, bases loaded, "Slow Poke" is on third base, "Speedy" is on second base and "Decent Speed" is on first base. "Grounder" hits a chopper toward third and "Slow Poke" is struck by the ball in fair territory. He is out and the bases remain loaded for the next hitter "Grand Salami" who promptly deposits the first pitch over the facade and into the street behind right center field. The double play is averted again and 4 runs score after that.
3. No outs, runners on first and second and going on the pitch. The batter hits a line drive toward the second baseman but the ball strikes the runner coming from first. In this case a triple play may be averted.
Can you think of others, not particularly involving a double play or triple play?
