View Full Version : Mike Epstein a "logical candidate" for Giants' hitting coach

The Giants have fired Joe Lefebvre, their hitting coach.

Could Mike Epstein be in the running for the job? One sportswriter thinks so:

"Sabean said he will consider in-house and outside candidates to fill the slots. Logical candidates for hitting coach include Jim Bowie, the Giants' Triple-A hitting coach; Padres minor-league hitting coordinator Tony Muser and onetime A's first baseman Mike Epstein, who is out of organized ball but long has had Bochy's ear on hitting."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy endorses Epstein's approach on Mike's website:

Bochy offered him the job at San Diego and Mike turned them down because of too low of pay. If the Giants come up with enough money to satisfy Mike, he might take the job. But, hitting coaches don't get paid a whole lot, relatively speaking, in comparison to the players and the manager.

An interesting aside that has nothing to do with this but all the names match up...I was looking at what some of the local HS teams have done with the MLB draft (on baseball-reference). I noticed that Eric Chavez, Eric Munson, and Jake were all drafted the same year from the same high school, and following season a Bochy was drafted from that same school. I would assume that's Bochy's son. Must have been a couple of good years at that place.

I also heard that Butler was in the running. His name keeps coming up as one of a handful of prospects to take the job.

Gee, I hope he gets the job...when things get dull next summer, we can break down before and after swings of all Giant players....I also heard he was a candidate for the Cleveland Indians...something about needing a bunch of "bug squishers".

I talked to Jake Epstein today and there has been quite a few offers from different places. It doesn't sound as if Mike is too interested as of right now. He really doesn't care for California and I think he is pretty comfortable running a business with his son. Only time will tell.....

Callyjr,
What other teams were interested in Mike?
