Since 1957, the MLB record for the longest consecutive game streak of 20 _____ or less (not including zero) by a player who was in the starting lineup is three games, by the "The Big Hurt".
What word belongs in the blank? And, in what YEAR did he do it?
NOTES:
-By "consecutive game streak", I mean three consecutive games for the player, not consecutive team games.
-He holds the record all by himself (no one else is tied).

I am having a hard time imagining anything a player does 21+ times a game on a routine basis so that a streak of 3 of 20 or less would be a milestone.

C'mon guys and girls! I know it's a tough question and all, but I don't think y'all are reading the question correctly. Less than 20 at-bats, errors, or total chances has been done by nearly every player in every game ever played. So, there's tons of 3 game streaks of those.

Practice swings in the on-deck circle? (I wouldn't be surprised if the folks at Elias keep that stat)

No, I'm just saying that the player who had this streak won a World Series in his career. You still have to fill in the blank with one simple word, and it's not a name.

The only thing that I can think of that makes sense at all to me is pitches. A pitcher started three games in a row and threw less than 20 pitches in each? Or, maybe the starts didn't have to be consecutive games?
EDIT: I just read that they didn't have to be consecutive games, so I say it's a starter who lasted less than 20 pitches in three consecutive starts. The Big Hurt...was it the guy who broke his arm while pitching, Dravecky? Maybe Herb Score, or Jim Bouton? Don Drysdale? The guy who hit Conigliario?

Correct!!! Nice job.
In 1958, starting pitcher Stan Williams of the Dodgers had less than 20 pitches (12, 17, and 13) in three consecutive games. No other starting pitcher from 1957-2007 has ever thrown less than 20 pitches in 3 straight starts. The funny thing is, he did not get shelled in these games. He only gave up 3 runs total. For some reason, his manager had him on a short leash. Or, perhaps he had an injury or something? Anyone know? According to his baseball-reference bio, Stan's nicknames were "Big Daddy" and "The Big Hurt". He was/is 6'5", 230 lbs.

I did notice using the game logs on baseball-reference.com that the starts in question were:
1) 08/27/58 12 pitches - 4 batters
2) 09/03/58 17 pitches - 5 batters
3) 09/15/58 13 pitches - 2 batters
and he followed that up with...
4) 09/27/58 24 pitches - 5 batters
In the 4th game he threw 16 strikes to the 5 batters but didn't strike any of them out. Must have been a lot of foul balls.
Also on 5/17/61 he threw the most pitches using the baseball-reference play index. He threw 207 pitches while winning the game 2-1 in 11 innings. He only gave up 4 hits but struckout 11 and walked 12!
It should be noted that baseball-reference only has pitch counts going back to 1988 except for Dodger games that took place between 1957 and 1964.

Most odd...note that the starts are spread out, 4 in a month.
I would guess that he had to be recovering from an injury, but I'd like to hear the real story.

Good info there. Maybe they were saving his arm in 1958 because they wanted him to set a pitch-count record in 1961! :laugh
