Mods, I don’t know if this topic would be best placed here or in “History of the Game” so you can move it if you wish.

As I stated elsewhere in another thread, I’m kind of getting tired of the retro stadium phase. Also inline with the retro phase has been the conversion to plain baseball uniforms since the late 1980’s with the boring road grays, etc.

I’m probably one of the few, but I loved the 1970’s multi-colored softball style uniforms, especially light blue that virtually every team used to wear on road unis back then. Pirates and A’s, (both with the 999 combination possibilities) or the Astros, it didn’t matter, the wilder the uniform the better. That along with actually seeing the sanitary socks on the players instead of pants dragging on the ground. I guess I grew up with that and liked it.

I’ve attached a couple (1973 A’s and 1978 Pirates) from the National Baseball Hall of Fame http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dressed_to_the_nines/database.htm

Using the A's and Pirates again as an example, watching those 1972-74 and 1979 World Series highlights with the teams basically wearing a different uniform for each game (home + away) was kind of fun.

Thoughts?

Like you said: The baby blue road uni's were quite good. But the uni's of the A's and the Pirates were plain awful. The only thing I liked about the Pirates were their pill box caps.

I hated the uniforms you mentioned then, and I hate them now. I prefer the white/gray uniforms.

Colored uniforms are good if they're pulled off right. The A's and Pirates ones right up there are not pulled off well. The only good one is the second A's home uniform. All the other uniforms seem to clash.

Another thing I forgot to mention also was the caps/helmets. A lot of the caps/helmets had a white or different color facing and/or the bill was a different color from the rest of the cap. Nowadays all the caps are the same color. Funny that when the teams do the retro days, they seem to get the uniforms right but not the caps. The Brewers this past weekend wore a throwback uni but the cap was all blue instead of the yellow facing.

Obviously some teams (NYY, LAD, CHC-home only to name a few) have never done wholesale changes to their uniforms, but have had minor tinkering here and there.

My favorite Marlins cap today remains the teal with the black lid, which the current ownership group has banished permanently.

That's a Sunday uniform for the Brewers. Plus, the cap that you're referring to is a road cap.

Gotcha. Wrong on the Brewers but my mind tells me when I've seen other throwback unis that sometimes single colored caps have been used rather than the ones with the different colored facing.

I'm not sure what you are referring to. The only throwback uniforms I know of that were screwed up royally were the 75th anniversary NFL uniforms.

I remember the 70s Braves caps...

...had a blue bill, while the helmets...

I remember the Brewers--the home caps were all blue, while the road caps had the yellow front panel. The helmets, however, featured a white front panel, both home and road.

I loved all those 1970s uniforms! They were awesome. I can't stand these mostly bland uniforms of today.

Well, I like nowadays alternate uniforms of the A's, the Indians, the Mets and the Padres. They're not really bland IMO.

This is kind of random, but the NHL eliminated all of its alternate uniforms for this season. All teams will will now only have one home and one away--no more third jerseys.

I think it has something to do with the new RBK cool-flo uniforms that all teams will be wearing this season. It might just be a temporary thing for this season--ditching the alternates.

Something like the cool base jerseys made by Majestic?

Well I must say that this third jersey thing was running out of hand. Almost every team had one. And I could not say that many of them were an improvement over the home or road jersey.
