The Most underrated and unexpected team to reach the playoffs, and quietly they will win the NL West, my vote is for Melvin as of today, over Hurdle and Piniella.

I said before and now - only Lou Piniella.
With mediocre team like the Cubs he have fullfilled excellent score.

Clint Hurdle or my own Padres' Buddy Black, first year as a manager, nobody expected the Padres to make a run at the playoffs, with Peavy as the only above average player on the team.

Id say Trevor Hoffman is pretty above average.

Why Trevor Hoffman?

Bob Melvin...The D-backs have utilized the young players and been in contention. I think they have done very well this year.

Hurdle or Melvin is the best choice to me, but managers are usually a function of the horses they ride.

I think Manager of the Year is by FAR the stupidest award handed out. How the hell are we supposed to know how well a manager performed? The usual definition of "manager of the most surprising team" is crap. Is a manager really responsible for his players improving 15 to 25 wins in ability? Maybe a bit, but hitting and pitching coaches are more valuable in that regard (although still not crazy important.)

If you analyze managers on their in-game decision-making, they almost all come out hurting their teams.

If I have to vote, I go with Manny Acta, because he's shown a basic competency for what wins ballgames.

Hurdle or Melvin were my choices with Arizona's youth giving Melvin the slight edge.

I chose Clint Hurdle. Old Sweater is probably the only person who would have chosen the Rockies to go to the playoffs at the beginning of the season. The Rockies are a very surprising and quiet ballclub (10 wins in a row).

I voted for Bob Melvin. His team, despite having a NEGATIVE run differential, will probably make the playoffs, and have the best record in the NL. Some tiny portion of that has to be due to Melvin.

As much as I love "Sweet Lou" my namesake, I have to go with Hurdle. Lou has a mess of horses to ride, even though the pitching isn't as strong as it could be. I think Lou has that special ability to keep his hands off when he should, and make a change when he should. His "gut feeling" is usually right. He is a great manager, but who expected the Rockies to be in this thing? Go Rockies! Go Cubs! Go Mariners.....oh, wait....stupid Mariners. :ughh

I voted other for Manny Acta. The Nationals were expected to be the worst team in the history of the game, and they really haven't had that bad of a season. 72-87 isn't too bad and I'm really hoping for a sweep, even though I would like to see the Phillies make the playoffs, to get to 75-87 which would far surpass any expectations from anyone before this season starter.
