One of the stars of his day, Jimmy Sheckard collected over 2000 hits, stole over 460 bases and is statistically similar to Hall of Famer Harry Hooper, according to Baseball-Reference. What do you think - should he be in the Hall?

I like Sheckard as a lot, but he was too damned inconsistent. Compare his 1901 season with 1902, or 1903 with 1904. He would have these huge seasons, and then follow them up with duds(at least comparitively). I have no idea how a player of such obvious skills could fluctuate so wildly from season to season.

His inconsitency keeps him out, and I think that is fair.

How does his defense stack up?
I'm under the impression that it was pretty impressive.

One of many in the Hall of Very Good. He led the league in a lot of different categories, OBP, SPCt, HR, 3B, R and SB (2x), but had a lot of what seem to be poor seasons. Bill James devotes a lot of time to him in a Historical Abstract or on of his other publications.

Sheckard was certainly a fine player and probably better than Hooper. To me neither merit the HoF, but if you forced me to pick one of them I would pick Sheckard.
