Barrybonds.com Journal entry (http://barrybonds.mlb.com/players/bonds_barry/journal/latest.jsp):
Dear Fans,

This journal will be one of my last entries as a San Francisco Giant. Yesterday, I was told by the Giants that they will not be bringing me back for the 2008 season. During the conversation with Peter McGowan I was told that my play this year far exceeded any expectations the Giants had, but that the organization decided this year would be my last season in San Francisco. Although I am disappointed, I've always said baseball is a business -- and I respect their decision. However, I am saddened and upset that I was not given an earlier opportunity to properly say goodbye to you, my fans, and celebrate with the city throughout the season as I truly believe this was not a last minute decision by the Giants, but one that was made some time ago. I don't have nor do I want any ill feelings towards the organization, I just wish I had known sooner so we had more time to say our goodbyes and celebrate the best 15 years of my life.

I consider the City of San Francisco and you, the fans, my family. Thank you for loving me and supporting me throughout all the highs and lows. I feel a deep connection with you as I have grown up with all of you since the days my dad first became a Giant. The Bay Area has loved my family and friends for so many years and I thank you for that. It is now a time for change, as many athletes have experienced. It is comforting to know that those who have come before me -- Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Joe Montana and Jerry Rice, to name a few -- have forever remained in the hearts of the fans, as I know I will too.

During my career as a Giant, so many people made significant impressions on my life. I'd like to thank all my past and current teammates. I've had the opportunity to play with some amazingly talented ballplayers who have treated me with respect, supported me and rooted for me throughout the years. Mike Murphy, our devoted Equipment Manager, used to baby-sit me as a little boy at Candlestick Park. There are no words to describe the love and respect I have for him. Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper are the two best broadcasters in the business. Their professionalism, integrity and love for the game, puts them in a league of their own. I thank them for their support and I'm honored to call them friends. It is also important to thank all the men and women behind the scenes at the stadium who come to work every day and make it possible for us all to enjoy a day at the ballpark. I love walking to clubhouse hearing their "hellos" every day.

I would have loved nothing more than to retire as a Giant in the place where I call home and have shared so many momentous moments with all of you, but there is more baseball in me and I plan on continuing my career. My quest for a World Series ring continues.

Until next time,

Barry Bonds

This is no surprise. It was clear for a while now that Bonds wouldn't be returning to the Giants in 2008.

Thoughts?

He'll become a DH somewhere out west.

Hopefully. I want him to reach 3000 hits.

I think the only places that Barry could go to at this point might be the following:

1) Oakland (just across the bay)
t2) Tampa Bay (name their all-time best DH...)
t2) Seattle (he'd be out of the spotlight alittle more often)
4) Pittsburgh (maybe just for old times sake)

He will want to go to play off potential team. I think he may consider:

Yankees
Tigers
Angels

Barry led the Giants in batting WS again this year, by almost a 2:1 margin over Molina or Winn. So they are losing their biggest bat and replacing him with ...?

Barry is also the fourth-best hitting outfielder in the NL this year, behind Holliday, Byrnes and Dunn.

There is no reason for Barry to be ineffective next season. He still has great bat speed and a great eye, as he always has, since his years in Pittsburgh.

The only concerns for a potential suitor are his health. If healthy, he will be a tremendous offensive asset to any team willing to pay the price.

I think it's strange that his beloved team, the one he refers to as "family," dumped him after he got his controversial milestone this season. If he's still stacking up the numbers, the management and ownership should give him his wish.

It looks mighty fishy.... :silent:

I keep hearing people say Bonds is struggling this year and is of little value. I'm new to linear weights, but I think this information is correct:

Let's check out how "bad" Barry is doing this season:

52 singles (25.376)
14 doubles (10.934)
28 home runs (39.368)
89 non-intentional walks (29.102)
43 intentional walks (8.514)
3 HBP (1.059)
5 SB (.975)
204 non-K outs (-62.016)
54 K's (-17.064)
TOTAL: 36.248
Per game (125 games): +0.290

How good is that:
Bonds contributes 0.84 runs per game (0.29+0.55).
Magglio Ordonez, the best hitter on my favorite team, contributes 0.83 runs per game.

Ordonez will likely finish 2nd in MVP voting yet Bonds is actually contributing more (when he plays) than Ordonez is.

during-season moves by the giants are extremely rare.
when was it clear to you, wags?

RC/27 outs, min 450 PA (through 09/21)

1. Barry Bonds - 10.20
2. David Ortiz -9.39
3. A-Rod - 9.37
4. Mags - 8.96
5. Chipper Jones - 8.95

OPS, min 450 PA (through 09/21)

1. Barry Bonds - 1.053
2. A-Rod - 1.051
3. Ortiz - 1.034
4. C Jones - 1.028
5. Matt Holliday - 1.009

Yeah, you could say he's pretty effective as a hitter still.

Now the Giants can be the San Francisco Giants again and not Barry Bonds and the Giants. :gt

I have discussed this with some baseball loving friends overhere. From the beginning I have said that the Giants would not resign him. They had a nice share of fans that wanted to see him reach the milestone and now he is dumped (more or less).

I don't want him to come to the Yankees. I think he will sign with Oakland.

I'm not saying that he could be going there, I am saying that is only one of the teams he would consider.

That would certainly help bring people to the ballpark, and it would help with their new image. He's definitely going to an AL team, and I don't think it will be the Yankees or the Red Sox. Maybe it will be a small-market team that wants to draw some more people to the park. Royals? Blue Jays? I don't know how A's fans feel about him, but I don't think he'll go to Oakland.

But he also said he wants a ring....

Don't forget too, he is only 65 hits away from 3,000. He could still be somewhat of a draw at the box office.

There is real chance here that Bonds may not play anywhere next year. He asked for something like 15 million during the last off season, with the home run record looming, and still nobody wanted him until the Giants changed their minds and bailed him out. If he doesn't lower his asking price significantly, teams may not bite on him.

His career is done. The A's are too cheap to get him (plus the owner hates Bonds). I think Bonds would be too arrogant to go anywhere else and play for anything less than $15M.

Looks to me that once he passed Aaron...... in a Giant uniform they really didn't care to keep him around. My thoughts they had their minds already made up, let him do it in a Giants uniform and then let him go.

Sure he could still be of some use to an AL team, the DH.

Interesting, I wonder who he will end up playing for next year.

I bet he will play even if it is for less than $15 million, in order to reach the 3,000 hit plateau (and possibly win a World Series).

They probably claim he was saving the sport over there, then he'd hurt his ankle before leaving, barley play for them, and then hurt his knee and end his season about two weeks in.....

The only AL team who could likely afford him would be the Yanks. If he were much younger, then he'd have more people giving him the look.

The Red Sox have Ortiz, so who else would want him? The Angels? I doubt this, and I don't see Cleveland or Detroit considering him either.

I'd say that by way of people deciding to sign him, he'd either have to lower his price, retire or consider taking a year off, a la Sosa.
