Am I right to presume this is the official "farewell to Shea Stadium" logo?

That's the patch the Mets are going to be wearing next year.

That's pretty cool, I like how they have old Shea stadium connected with the current one, nice nod to the history of the Stadium.

The Yankee Stadium patch the Yankees will be wearing next year, as well as all of the 2008 MLB uniform changes, can be seen here:

Thanks, I like the Yankee Stadium Patch, very nice touch. I'm surprised at the D-Rays change. No longer will they be the D-Rays, just the Rays. Interesting, and thier uniforms are really nice, Toronto's are funny, Cleveland's are old school, and the Phillies aren't much different. But pretty cool changes to uniforms next year.

Tampa had been talking about that for a while. Apparently some people were offended by the word "Devil" in there.

There was an old Shea Stadium?..................................
It woulda been nicer if they put the trade center in the back with the buildings, but I know some people are still sensitive about what happened.

Yes, in 1964 it had the blue and orange panels, and it wasn't until a renovation in the '80's (I think) that it was painted blue and neon figures were placed on it.

And if you don't know, the Mets have the skyline in the background that is the same one they used for their logo. It doesn't have the twin towers but has buildings that are representive of the boroughs. It would be a good idea to put the twin towers in (as they do on their scoreboard) but the Mets are going with a traditional look for their Shea Stadium patch.

The field was a long, almost rectangular bathtub shape, and it used to be located up against some kind of a hill. It's fascinating how they were able to move the whole thing from Manhattan to Queens before starting the renovation work.

Remember, the Mets logo was designed in the very early 1960s, and the World Trade Center had yet to be built... that's why it's not in the logo.

So Shea used to be in Manhattan? How did they move a whole stadium to Queens though? Did they take it apart and put it back together?

Um......the Mets played in the Polo Grounds for 2 years when Shea was being built. When it first opened in 1964 it was kinda gray on the outside, with these blue and orange tiles on the front. It was renovated in the 80's and they painted it blue and made it look more like the Shea you know today. You should go to the Old Shea thread here, they got really good pics of old Shea. The basic design of Shea wasn't altered like Yankee Stadium was. If you have any questions on Shea you should ask some of the Mets fans here on the site, because they have better info then I do on shea.

That's hilarious, I think. But to each his own. It's gonna be weird refering to them as the Rays, cause I say the D-Rays. They shoulda changed thier name to that: The Tampa Bay D-Rays. Anyhoo, I really think they're gonna look better with those uniforms then the ones they have now.

I support dropping the "Devil" just because they hardly ever use it, even though I'll probably keep saying Devil Rays anyway. But why did they need a whole new identity change? Is that really the best they could do? The word Devil doesn't show up on any of their uniforms, and those new ones look awful. Maybe they'll be better in person but in my opinion, they went from having the worst uniforms (gradients) in MLB in the early years, to some of the best uniforms in MLB, and now they're back to the absolute worst. The green and blue was unique and recognizable and interesting, and the new logos are bland as hell and generic blue like any other team. I could have made up better logos than that in Paint in 5 minutes

The blue, the orange, the interlocking exteriors, subtle skyline... lack of black accents.

Has this been confirmed as authentic?

Thank the lord the TB Rays did not go with red. But blue is also generic. They should have kept the green, because only the A's, and in a lesser extent the Mariners have that color.

I could not agree with you more about your excitement for the lack of black. My Mets memories are painted with strokes of blue and orange ... and the occasional black, can't forget the '99 and '00 teams but I am happy to see they are trying to put black on the back burner.

On a side note check out these special edition jerseys by the Mets.

Notice no black, I'm wondering if this a test item for a new alternate jersey, maybe for 2009. New ballpark, new uniform?

Well my point in post the uniform was the retro look and by retro I mean there was no black like the patch. It's always possible that slowly but surely the Mets are slipping away from black, but it's probably not possible with the amount of money that can be made.

According to an official New York Mets press release dated 11/26/2007 12:27 PM ET:

The New York Mets today unveiled the commemorative logo celebrating the 45-season history of Shea Stadium in conjunction with the final year in their long-time home. The Mets will wear this logo as a patch on the right sleeve of their uniforms during all 2008 home games. (Click here (http://newyork.mets.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20071126&content_id=2307318&vkey=pr_nym&fext=.jsp&c_id=nym) for complete press release)

So by "today," they mean 11/26/07.

If that's the case, then how come I was able to unveil that very same logo to the Baseball Fever community over two months (http://baseball-fever.com/showpost.php?p=1009155&postcount=1) ago? And, as I mentioned in that post, I got it from Flickr.com!

If the Mets just unveiled it "today," where did the person who posted it on Flickr get it?

Must've been leaked by someone in the organization. The Yankees patch I believe hasn't been officially announced yet either but it's been out for a while.

yeah, it's really fairly common for stuff like that to float around for a while before it becomes official. You see first of all, some guy has to design the logo. A lot of times this is done via a contest or even by 2-3 pro artists. Chances are maybe you can find 2-3 alternate logo's on the internet somewhere that didn't make the cut. Then the team has to pick which one they like as the final logo(which they probably did the 2 months ago like you say). Then they have to go through all kinds of legal mumbo jumbo to get MLB to approve it. That could take a few months(sometimes longer).

So really the logo is old news as it was unofficially official a while back. Just like everyone knew that TB would be known as the Rays for almost a year or whatever. The same goes with player contracts, even though A-Rod and the yankees agreed on a deal like 2 weeks ago. The league had to put their stamp on it and that took some time too.

Hello everybody – This is my first post and have been meaning to post on this subject for some time. I have been a Met fan my whole life or at least up until last year….Let me explain.

The Mets have no tradition and last year was the final straw which drove me away! First off the Mets have 5 uniform tops and three caps. There is no identity with this team. One day they wear the home blacks, then the snow whites followed by the blacks and if were lucky you might see the pinstripes….That’s if were lucky. I think they wore them a total of 10 times. The Mets are BLUE AND ORANGE not black. Try watching highlight clips and you will never see the same uniform two shots in a row! They should have two jerseys…Home pinstripes and road grays with the blue cap!!!!!!!

Second is the new stadium, Citi Field or as I like to call it Shi**y Field. What are the Wilpon’s thinking? 1. The outside is a replica of Ebbets Field. 2. Jackie Robinson rotunda and 3. Ebbets Grill. Why doesn’t Fred and his son hop on their jet and go buy the Dodgers if they are so Dodger hungry? Who want’s to walk into Citi and get bombarded with dodger memorabilia. Since when did Jackie Robinson have anything to do with the Mets? How about Tom Seaver Rotunda or Gil Hodges Rotunda??? I kind of like the ring of Casey’s Grill or Mookie’s Grill better than Ebbets Grill. I have no problem with them trying to honor the Dodgers or Jackie, but the Mets should come first, second and third! The Dodgers must love the free publicity.

And the last straw….as I said earlier NO TRADITION. If the Mets are going to honor one of there own do it 110% and not 80%. When the Mets had Ralph Kiner night last season they should have honored the man who has been with them since day one with a little more respect. Yes they named the TV booth in the new stadium after him, but how about putting his name up with the retired numbers on the outfield wall. Also, maybe naming one of the outfield corners as Kiners Korner! Kiner is a very important part of Mets history and for the youngsters going to the games they are not asking who is the TV booth named after. If they see his name on the outfield wall they will ask about him and their fathers will tell wonderful stories about Ralph and what he meant to the organization. That’s how tradition is born.

Hey Wilpons…Take a note from some other teams… The Cardinals have a Jack Buck buss outside the stadium that give calls and his name is with the retired numbers. Harry Cary’s name is on the foul pole at Wrigley. Ernie Harwell has his name in Comerica…Then there are all the retired numbers and statues…..And we all know about the Yanks! The Mets have Jackie.

BTW, the same should have been done with Bob Murphy a few years ago…Actually more so with Murph

Thanks for letting me vent!

P.S Another thing that kills me…They should wear the Shea Stadium Patch on the road jerseys as well.

Why don’t we just get it over with and rename the Mets the New York Dodgers!

no offense dude, but come back from the ledge.
How do you know they aren't going to have stuff like that?
Ebbets Club is just name of the club seats that are going to cost more than your car. And its just refering to the stadium inspiration.
the Coogans Landing area is insipred by the Polo grounds (but its just a name of an area).
The Orchard as the picnic area based around Apple.
Theres a whole Bridge theme to that stadium tying back to the logo.
Just because they haven't disclosed the names of the concession stands don't refer to mets players yet doesn't mean they wont.
Honestly I'd be shocked if they didn't.
There is going to be a museum in the stadium.
No where in any of the Met materials is "Dodgers" specifically referenced. If things were being named after Koufax and lasorda you'd have point
The whole Jackie thing was to get all the columnists off their back who wanted them to name the whole stadium after 42.

Chill out.

Wilpon is a Brooklyn Dodgers fan. The Mets exist because the Dodgers left which means that the Brooklyn Dodgers are a part of the New York Mets history. Ebbets Field and Jackie Robinson stayed (at least figuratively) in Brooklyn just like the Brooklynites who were left behind. Just like the guy who now owns the Mets.

And the last straw….as I said earlier NO TRADITION. If the Mets are going to honor one of there own do it 110% and not 80%. Are you suggesting the Mets retire his name?

They named a workspace after him. Every broadcaster who broadcasts a game from the new park will do so in a place named after him. That's as honorable, if not more so, than his name on a wall.

Why don’t we just get it over with and rename the Mets the New York Dodgers!

Well, now you're just being silly!

Is that the stand that you can buy back your hub caps that will be stolen off your car if you park in the lot?

I can't find the story right now, but I remember reading in the NYT sometime in mid-September about roughly 40 cars had their side view mirrors meticulously sawed off. Someone was eventually found in the investigation of the incident and found the suspect to have a relationship with a junkyard owner.

At one point, I felt bad for them being forced out, but that was a pill I just could not swallow, and when I heard that story of people losing mirrors because of those sharks, the wrecking ball can't hit those buildings soon enough and eminent domain flexes its muscle.
