I've notice our resident Giants fan on this board, West Coast Orange and Black, has got to calling his home venue Mays Field.

Is this something that is just personal to him, or is there a larger movement by SF Giants fans to have this be the de facto name of the ballpark?

If so, please keep it up. I like it so much better than [Insert the telecommunications company of the year] Park.

i am but one small fish in a large pond, pete.
giants fans, indeed, have been referring to the ballyard as mays field.

the radio and tv guys hafta refer to it by the name that was paid for, but they all sneak in and rotate "at+t park at china basin"; "mays field at china basin"; "the ballpark at china basin"; "mays field".

pacbell was swallowed by sbc, which was subsequently sold to at+t, and that is why "at+t park" is used. there has been a push to honor the greatest giant of them all, willie mays, by naming the ballpark after him - while he is still living.

at+t could still sponsor the park: "mays field, at at+t park".
at+t would still have their logos wher they do. lotsa people think that they would actually get more mileage outta re-naming the yard for mays.

Very few trends on the economic side of pro sports & baseball in recent years are more abominable to me than the selling of ballpark "naming rights". If people start calling Pacific Bell - SBC - AT&T Park "Mays Field" instead, that will be Great as far as I am concerned. There are a couple of quasi-precedents for this. When Sunny Jim Dunn bought the Cleveland Indians many many years ago, he changed the name of League Park to Dunn Field. Although the official name changed, The popular usage name remained League Park, & when Dunn left the Tribe scene, the new owner had the good sense to not swim upstream. He changed the official name back. And when Candlestick Park first changed to 3Com Park, one of the earliest corporate names; there was a lot of resistance by fans and even broadcasters, who kept referring to the park, maybe to this day (as I do), as "The 'Stick". I'm all for starting a movement to see this name (Mays Field) catch on! I'd like to see all the fans in corporate-name cities do this also.

the 'stick is the 'stick - always will be. no doubt bout it.

the people have power.
the address of the ballyard was officially "1 willie mays plaza" until a handful of fans - i gotta say, yours truly lead the charge - approached pete magowan and told him that it was no matter that the ballyard was on the odd-numbered side of the street... it HAD to be "24 willie mays plaza"... which is now the official address.

I like it, Mays field at China Basin. Went there in July for the first time and I had a blast. We took the light rail from Union Square and partied at Mojo's before the game. I purchased two standing room only tickets but stayed in the lower deck behind homeplate the whole time. Watching the fog roll into the outfield at night was spectactular and the cool San Francisco breeze was so nice. I took some pics and put them in the personal ballparks photos section.

If the Chronicle or Examiner or whatever news organization had any cajones, they would start calling it Mays Field, too. It's not as though they're seeing any money from AT&T by referring to it by its corporate name.

I heard they tried to get Ralph Loren to buy nameing rights so they could call the park the Polo Grounds! They should call the place May's Field, He is one of the best player to put on a uniform not just a Giants one! They change the name so much I always forget what to call it! It's a great park and should have a great name! I think Mays Field will be the nickname regardless what the stupid corparate official name is!

And do you know the pathetic thing about that? Assuming its true and not an urban legend? They COULD call it the "Polo Grounds"... all they have to do is leave the $10 million or so on the table... or whatever naming rights go for these days... lol AS IF.....!!! AT&T should do the right thing and call the park Mays Field. As West Coast O&B said... AT&T will still get a ton of signage... not to mention tons of free pub for doing the right thing... positive PR for a big corp? No self promotion involved? lol.... AS IF !!!!!

I'm excited that the Mets bypassed the corporate route and named their new stadium City Field as a tribute to the residents of the greatest city in the world.

Please, god I don't believe in, let this be an intentional joke. I'm nearly positive it is, but i'm constantly amazed by these things.

So, good one John, good point, way to make us all laugh.

It truly is the greatest Citi in the world, what with it's overdraft protection, IRA's, and home equity loans.
