He only needs to pass Beckett, who leads him by 1 win. He barely leads in Ks by 4, but is leading by a wide margin in ERA. Your thougts?

I thought you only had to lead in W, ERA, and Ks in your own league.

There are 3 Triple Crowns. 2 for each league, and 1 for all of baseball. Johan Santana lead in all 3 categories in all of baseball last year. Dwight Gooden did it before in 1985.

Actually I had forgotten that Beckett was in a different league (D'oh!) and I didn't know that there was one for all of baseball. So, I learned something again.
So, go Peavy, get one for all of baseball. That would be awesome.

Well he is in great shape for the ML ERA crown. The Strikeout crown will be tougher, But he is in 2nd place (6 behind Bedard who is out for the season) with Santana breathing down his neck.
The tough one will be wins. He trails Beckett by one. He does lead by one in NL. It is getting late to make any move here.
Looks like he will have to settle for the NL triple crown.

Is there actually a award handed out for leading the MLB? Or for any of the MLB leaders in any stat? I always thought it just was the recognition of leading MLB in any category.
This is all I could find.
Triple Crown of Pitching
The Triple Crown of pitching is "awarded" to the pitcher who leads — or ties — his league in three major pitching areas: 1: wins 2: strikeouts and 3: earned run average. All three of those categories must be led or tied at the end of the season in order to be part of a Triple Crown performance. Few players have ever come close and when one simply leads in two categories it is often a noteworthy achievement. Baseball Almanac is pleased to present the Triple Crown Winners.

There is no reward for winning the pitching Triple Crown. There probably would be for the hitting Triple Crown because it is so rare. But for the pitching one, it's just a title.

The only reward is the Cy Young Award, and if they win the World Series.

Peavy has the best MLB ERA 2.39 and 225 SO and the best record in NL 18 wins.

Yes I understand that, I didn't mean like the player got a trophey or something.
It's when you said this.

Is there actually a recognized MLB award for the triple crown of pitching when you lead the majors? Or does it fall in the "just so happens he lead the majors category" like when a pitcher leads the league and the majors in any stat?
League = award?
lead majors = title?

No, there is no award that says "Johan Santana: 2006 Major League Triple Crown Winner". However, you're pretty much a lock to win the Cy Young Award. Every pitcher who has won the Triple Crown in their league or the majors all together, has won the CYA that year.

Since the award's inception in 1956, 10 times a pitcher has won the Pitching Triple Crown, 10 times have won the award, and 9 of them unanimously.

Brandon Webb 2.75 17 10 3.02 192 2.7
Brad Penny 2.90 16 4 2.93 133 1.9

Jake Peavy has the best ERA 2.36, the best K 233 and the most wins 18.
Only Smoltz has K/BB 4.0, Harang 3.9 and Peavy 3.7.
I think Peavy deserve the Cy Award, the Triple Crown Winner and the MVP.
