--I am going to hold off on casting my ballot for anothe rday or two. There are still some pretty close calls and some of my choices may be affected my player/team finishes. If it helps though, here are the players in my consideration set now (vote for whoever you want, these are just who I'm looking at).
MVP: my 10 will come from this group; Dick McAuliife, Tony Oliva, Dick Allen, Norm Cash, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Ron Santo, Willie Horton, Matty Alou, Roberto Clemente, Louis Aparicio, Frank Robinson, Johnny Roseboro and Joe Toore.
CYA: Its Sandy Koufax or Juan Marichal at the top of my ballot. Earl Wilson or Louis Tiant will get the third spot. The only other guys I could see making a ballot are some of the outstanding relievers this year - Regan and Locker of the Legends and Aker and McDaniel of the Knights, amoung others.
ROY: Tommy Agee, Mike Cuellar, Jose Santiago and Fergie Jenkins are the only candidates for my ballot at this time, but I may well be overlooking a deserving candidate.

--Dick McAuliffe may be a little bit of a homer vote, but he was the best player on the best team and leads the league in rate production - from the SS spot. Tony Oliva is very close after a brillant 2nd half that vaulted the Skipjacks into the playoffs and has him leading the league in runs created. The Hard Cider trio of Allen, Cash and Robinson all have some merit. It was hard pick which of them was team MVP, but Cash was my favorite player as a kid, Allen plays terrible defense and Robinson has to be considered at least a mild disappointment coming off a real life Triple Crown season.
--Ron Santo was the best player on the 2nd best team and I think his defensive edge on Allen is maybe a little larger than Allen's offensive advantage. Hank Aaron lead the league in HR (by a wide margin) and RBI. Matty Alou shattered the CKL single season batting mark and is at .392 with 3 games to play. Willie Horton may have had an even better season for the Redbirds though (and was another childhood favortie:rolleyes: ). The Diablos deserved someone on the ballot and Roberto Clemente was their best player.
--Juan Marichal was awesome for me and has the CKL season ERA record, unless Koufax pitches again and tosses a shutout. Sandy broke the CKL win and IP records though and is only .08 behind in ERA. The top 3 in ERA this season are also the top 3 in CKL history. The third spot on the ballot was close. Tiant was as good as Marichal and Koufax, but pitched quite a bit less. Diablos workhorse Earl Wilson and the Knights Gary Peters, who picked up his 20th win in his last start, got some consideration.

Santiago may seem like a bit of a homer vote, but he did finish fourth in the league in ERA, .13 ahead of both Jenkins and Cuellar. Let's hope he's not the next Tony Cloninger (though he probably won't get a chance, what with not starting for a full season for the rest of his career).

MVP
1. Tony Oliva - Absolutely incredible season. He edges out McAuliffe because without him, the Skipjacks may not make the playoffs, whereas without McAuliffe the Knights finish 20 games or so ahead instead of 39.
2. Dick McAuliffe - Are you kidding me? The fifth highest slugging, fifth highest on base percentage, 2nd in OPS, tenth in runs, 12th in RBI - and the guy's a shortstop!
3. Frank Robinson - Tough to decide if he or Allen was more valuable for the Hard Cider, hence my number four pick. But I favor Robbie.
4. Dick Allen - See above.
5. Sandy Koufax - Yes, he's my number one Cy Young pick as well. I believe that with almost any other pitcher in the rotation, JW is watching the playoffs instead of participating. If the Diablos had had Koufax, they'd be in, IMHO.
6. Matty Alou - Batted almost .400 and smacked a decent number of extra base hits as well. A beacon for the Pirates in an other wise totally dismal year.
7. Willie McCovey - Stretch was the big stick for the Legends.
8. Willie Stargell - Tough to decide which OFer was most important to the Diablos, but I went with Stargell over Clemente and Kaline.
9. Hank Aaron - The Cannons would've been out of the running a lot sooner than they were without Mr. Reliable supplying power and runs.
10. Ron Santo - Yup, a definite homer vote, but I had to get him on my ballot.
With apologies to Willie Horton, Willie Mays, Boog Powell, Norm Cash and others. So many great seasons, so few ballot slots.
Cy Young
The only difficulty here was which order to put the top two in. You could almost flip a coin, but I had to go with Koufax in the end. He was just a smidgeon better this year.
1. Sandy Koufax
2. Juan Marichal
3. Luis Tiant
Rookie of the Year
1. Fergie Jenkins - Perhaps some will consider this a homer vote also, but he led in the most categories and helped lead his team to the playoffs.
2. Mike Cuellar - A great first season for the sly lefty.
3. Jose Santiago - Rounding out the top three, another pitcher. He definitely overachieved for the Gold Sox.

Dan and Max must've been VERY impressed with Dick Allen's season this year - Dan has him at fourth and sixth; Max has him at fourth and seventh (I guess Max wasn't quite as impressed)!:laugh :laugh

MVP
1) Tony Oliva
2) Dick McAuliffe
3) Dick Allen (defenese wasn't that bad this year, not much range, but half as many errors as Santo)
4) Frank Robinson (finished the season strong)
5) Willie Mays (maybe getting taken for granted a bit now)
6) Norm Cash (played way above expectations, carrying the HC in the first half)
7) Ron Santo
8) Hank Aaron
9) Matty Alou
10) Sandy Koufax (if ever a pitcher deserves inclusion on an MVP list, Koufax does this year)
CYA
1) Sandy Koufax
2) Juan Marichal
3) Luis Tiant
ROY
1) Mike Cuellar
2) Fergie Jenkins
3) Jose Santiago
MVP
1. Sandy Koufax - my reasoning, he's our team MVP...
2. Tony Oliva - ...over this guy who appears to be the favorite.
3. Dick McAuliffe
4. Frank Robinson
5. Ron Santo
6. Juan Marichal
7. Hank Aaron
8. Dick Allen
9. Norm Cash
10. Matty Alou
CYA
1. Sandy Koufax
2. Juan Marichal
3. Luis Tiant
ROY
1. Fergie Jenkins
2. Mike Cuellar
3. Jose Santiago
Tough call going with the pitcher, and perhaps unfair in our system where we only have the MVP-CYA. Should we separate position players from pitchers? Dunno... but I have put pitchers on past MVP lists so I'll stick to my guns.

Certainly can't argue with any of those selections. I was a bit surprised more people didn't include Koufax somewhere on their ballot, since I don't think the Skipjacks would be in the post season without him. I didn't put him first, and it would take an absolutely unbelievable season for a pitcher to ever top my ballot, but I felt he deserved a mention.
And the Legends have their first award winner, ROY Fergie Jenkins!:clapping  :gt :dance I hope we'll get more in the future, but at least we finally have one. I think had the Gamblers made the playoffs rather than the Legends, that vote could have been reversed, but no doubt I don't win the Hulbert without Jenkins' fine rookie season. He led my staff in IP, was second in wins and had an overall fine season. Looking forward to many more productive seasons from him.
