Looks like they are planning to use some of the seating layouts into the design. Originally they planned to gut almost everything inside the stadium.

A few people in Houston want to turn the Astrodome into a production studio that would be financed by independent investors.

They're reasoning, "Hollywood has these huge soundstages, and we have some soundstages in Texas, but none are big enough to build a whole city in or to create an entire neighborhood," says Neely.

Someone needs to tell them that television and film are close-up mediums. You don't have to build the "whole city or create an entire neighborhood" unless you want to do a large broadway show.

They're also hoping to take jobs out of Hollywood and bring them to the Astrodome, but unless the city/state gives production companies huge tax breaks to film there, it's not going to happen.

Not necessarily. Sometimes production studios create blocks or big/huge sets to give the feeling that the place actually exists.

What if they filmed Lost, Gangs of New York, or Lord of the Rings in small sets?

They use green screens to film inside, and go on location to film shows like Lost. I work at the 20th Century Fox studios, so believe me, the current studios are big enough for these kind of productions. They want to turn the Astrodome into a giant theatre, which would be a huge waste.

Most likely the redevelopment will include the hotel. This latest idea from a group in Houston wants to make a push for a studio complex because the Astrodome Redevelopment Corporation (who is proposing the hotel/entertainment) no longer has exclusivity in this project. This process is still on-going and the county is reviewing the latest revision regarding ARC's proposed lease on the Dome hotel conversion.

giving it's location, and in light of recent events over the years.... i think it's a good evacuation center considering hurricane season starts this weekend.

It doesn't look that bad to me. Shame they have to pull a tiger stadium and make it sit there for years while people fill our heads with false hope.

They still use the dome. I'm not sure what for but I believe they hold a few events a year there.

Someone should do something like this for Yankee Stadium.
