John Hiller 2/1 on a 2004 UD Timeless Teams card; he also signed one of the protective index cards. Great success from one of the best relievers of the late 60's and early 70's, and from someone who made a great comeback after suffering a heart attack early in his career.

Two great pitchers came in yesterday:
Jon Matlack: 2/2 in 14 days
Lamar Hoyt: 1/1 in 402 days!!
I'd long since given up on Hoyt....until I saw Hudsonharden had recently gotten him back....that gave me hope....immediately after reading Hudson's post I went out to the mailbox and there it was. Mr. Hoyt must have finally gotten around to emptying his inbox.
Just goes to show you never know!

its an area between gates a-d where former red sox ( i think, Bill Monobouquette was there) sign autographs and pose for pictures and hour and a half before the game. I read about it in my program about 10 mins before the game
Sean Casey
09-03-2007, 09:29 PM
They usually have some good ex-Red Sox players signing at autograph alley; I've gotten Frank Malzone, Bill Monbouquette, and Skip Lockwood there, and I've heard that guys like Oil Can Boyd, Jim Lonborg, and Rico Petrocelli also sign there. Also, during most home games, Luis Tiant generally signs at his sandwich stand on Yawkey Way, right outside of autograph alley.

I had the best mail day EVER today:
Greg Brock c/o home 1/1
AND, my idol manager: Dick Williams 2/1, included a signed photo of himself and on the back he answered my question about what it was like to manage the 1967 red sox!!! This is my best return yet, I'm so excited! I screamed when I opened it!

I would take a look at the turnout times for certain players' TTM requests. If a player takes 30 or 40 days to return a request, you're probably too late already. If it's a week or two, you might still be able to sneak it in.

Killebrew charges $50 flat / $60 baseballs. It goes to his charity. It states that all of the autograph fee goes to his charity. I still think his asking price is very high, too high for me to want to make a "donation".

*Signed his name*
"The Shot Heard Round The World"

I also asked Mr Thomson in my letter "What was it like having Whitey Lockman and Sal Maglie as teammates?"
His reply: "Both were great players and nice guys. I roomed with Whitey."
What a class act, and a great ttm signer.
Also Daniel Bard C/O ... well to tell you the truth, I don't recall which team I sent to. But it was a minor league one... 1/1
Also it was postmarked from Charlotte NC.

The Charlotte pm is probably because he's playing for the Greenville Drive, in NC. I'd imagine that's where you sent to him, although he did play very briefly earlier this year for the Lancaster Jethawks, in CA.
I haven't had a success from Bard...don't remember if I've sent to him or not, have to check my list!

How do you determine who is a good risk to sign?
Whether they have signed before in the past. I have tried Livan Hernandez a few times in the last couple years and have not gotten anything back.
I wrote Livan in Spanish, and mentioned that my cousin was his rotation partner good friend of him while he played in Cuba, so hopefully if reads it, I'll get it back, but more likely he doesnt even read then   We should open a thread for failures, I mean, after a request has been out there for, lets say, 100 days, we should post it as a failure, and if it turns up in your mail one day, then we can move it to the successes thread.

It would be a good idea I think to start a thread of "non" successes
I think anything you feel has been out there a long time could be added to the list, then removed once you get your items returned.
I know that with myself just starting out in this hobby it would help/ease my mind when sending to players.
Just a suggestion I know that having to many topics to be constantly updating will be hard and will cause clutter but I would support this idea of the topic and would help in anyway that I was needed

My brother always opens my autograph requests while I'm off at college, and today he told me that I got Tommy Holmes in. It took a couple months to get this one back, but I'm glad I did.
I'm really surprised he only has 15 requests reported on SCN...seems to me that a 2-time All-Star who led the league in home runs one year and is 5th all-time for most at bats per strikeout would get more requests than that...especially since he has a 66% success rate.

How do you determine who is a good risk to sign?
Just search this site and others (some people have links to their own in their sigs) for players that had relatively quick returns. Most of the higher profile players don't seem to have the time to sign (or probably just don't feel like it). But some do seem to sign (Mark Buehrle, Mike Mussina, Johnny Damon). You may also want to try minor leaguers, before they get too "busy". A friend of mine got Joe Mauer when he was in the minors and don't think he signs any more. I've seen some successes with top prospects (Evan Longoria, Andrew McCutchen, Adam Jones). Try local minor league teams as they could be very quick. My first success took only 3 days from a local minor league team. But it doesn't hurt to try some people your not sure of. I've sent out to a few Baltimore players (Adam Loewen, Mark Clayton, Terrell Suggs) that I hadn't heard anything about. Hopefully they'll surprise me, but if they don't its not a big deal at least I tried.

On a side note: I think that the whole "TTM failure" thread idea is a bad one. All you have to do is go under search, click under the baseball card/ memorablia section type in the players name, and click "posts only". The reslts will show you whether a member has gotten back from player so and so. AND don't forget to go under the archived sections too.

But if we dont see a player in the successes thread, it doesnt necessarily mean that he doesnt sign, maybe, nobody has tried him before, while if we do see him in the failures thread, then we know for sure that he doesnt sign, for example, if I would had known that HudsonHarden had tried Livan and hadnt gotten anything back, I would had never wasted a card, stamps, etc.

That doesn't necessarily mean that you shouldn't try Livan, who knows, maybe you will be the first he signs for. I do post "failures" in this thread when I get a return to sender or receive a card back unsigned. I have seen people get successes back from over 3 years and I personally have gotten cards back that I sent more than 500 days ago. If you want a Livan signature, give it a go. You might be pleasently surprised.

Some notes:
Failure: I have yet to have a failure. I have not gotten back all the cards I have sent out but I see players return stuff 100 - 200 days after sent. So I always feel there is hope...
Smudge: I have gotten back a few smudges. No way around it I guess. If they put the card back in 'wet' there is a risk. There is also a risk if you send in a holder or sleeve. THey might not take it our when they sign. Then you have a signed piece of plastic and that would surely smudge on the way back...

I have only been collecting TTM for about a year, but I have had 11 actual "failures" so far. Note that I only consider it to be a failure if I fet a RTS, the players returns the item in the SASE unsigned, or the player dies.
Lew Burdette - RTS (shortly before he died, so he probably was no longer signing)
Jim Perry - Returned unsigned
Phil Cavarretta - RTS (bad address; re-sent and was successful)
Bill Skowron - Returned unsigned
Rollie Stiles - Died several weeks after I sent it
Gene Conley - RTS (bad address; later found out that he charges anyway)
Bernie Carbo - RTS (who knows why)
Tommy Holmes - Returned unsigned with new address; re-sent and was successful
Bob Wickman - RTS (over the summer, when he was still with the Braves, I wrote "c/o Atlanta Braves" but I accidentally wrote down the Diampndbacks address instead. Perhaps it was an ominous foreshadowing...)
Gino Cimoli - RTS (apparently bad address)
David Wells - RTS (was released by the Padres soon after I sent it)
I'm faily new at this, but I think it would really bother me if I player doesnt even send the card back unsigned.

From my experiences, the "superstars" who dont sign usually do not send back... I think this is mainly because of the amount of mail that they get each day & that they do not have time to go through it all.... there are players (a lot of retired) that will send back unsigned, I think they do that because they either charge for autographs or they simply don't sign (which could be for a number of reasons).

I'm faily new at this, but I think it would really bother me if I player doesnt even send the card back unsigned.
That's just part of the hobby...the players who do sign through the mail for free are doing so entirely out of their own generosity, so if a player chooses not to sign, I'm certainly not going to upset; I'm not doing him any favors by writing. Obviously I would rather a player send it back unsigned or RTS, but I'm taking a chance by sending unsolicited mail, so he can do as he wishes with it.
Well, of course we are taking a chance, and yes, they do sign out of their own generosity, but lets not forget, or better yet, lets hope they dont forget, who pays for their multimillion dollar salaries. As for the superstars, if you sign one autograph per day during the season, thats roughly 180 fans you would had made happy; but if you dont want to sign period, and you get a lot of requests, you can just give it to a clubhouse employee and tell them to put it inside the SASE and throw it in the mailbox, its not really that hard, plus, I'm sure every team has someone that takes care of the mail that can do that for then.

Because clubhouse employees have nothing better to do?
If you only send items that you don't mind losing, then it's not that big of a deal if you don't get it back. For instance, if I don't get my 1996 Fleer Ultra back from David Wells, I can go buy another one for about 10 cents. Right now I have about 50 baseball cards in the mail that I've sent over the past year. Even if I don't get any of them back, to me it's worth the loss of 50 common cards to get the 150+ signatures through the mail that I've gotten during the same timespan.

Today brought a signed 8x10 from former Philadelphia A's slugger Gus Zernial.
I got my first success ever today (I felt like a kid in a candy store):
Andy Fox c/o Florida Marlins, sent 8/3

The first 1/2 of it looks exactly like mine... looks like he added some on the end... I am guessing maybe he put more time in to this one than he did mine (which was ST and I know there were a lot of returns for him then, so maybe he just did those fast)....
