IMO, the Metrodome isn't a good baseball stadium. It's a good football stadium though.

Well...no one could ever accuse the Metrodome of being boring, at least not in its own way.
But it will be good to see the Twins get their own place in a few years.

I remember when the Metrodome first went up back in 1982...it was all the rage because it seemed like the "trend" in stadia back then was getting a dome. Now, people are staying away from non-retractable roof domes like the plague.
I'm glad Minneapolis is getting an open-air ballpark. The Metrodome is a good place for football, but terrible for baseball. I don't know what's going on in Minneapolis as far as getting a new stadium for the Vikings, but here's an idea...why now expand and renovate the Metrodome for the Vikes once the Twins move out?
Well...no one could ever accuse the Metrodome of being boring, at least not in its own way.
Being no fan of roofs that are permanent and plastic grass, I am glad they are being replaced. In the case of the Metrodome however, I'm kind of sorry to see it leave the baseball scene.
I became a fan & fell in love w/ the Twins the year they finally won it all. What a great team and a great story ! Then came '91 and the most exciting World Series in my lifetime. I actually thought last place could be a permanent reality and they might really get contracted or move. Then they go out and make a season long run at the title ! Every Met fan loves an underdog and this francise is the uber-underdog. They have carved out a legendary narative over the last 20 years.
It all took place at the Metrodome. The TV images of the white hankees is indelable, but the most unique thing was the noise ! I don't know if you midwestern vikings are really the loudest fans in sports, but I do know post season games at the Metrodome were the loudest things I've ever seen on TV ! Don't know what it was like in person but you guys must have had headaches on the way home.
You'll win in the new place. Thats definite. It just will be a little quieter. It'll be like every other team's post season. That alone will give me a soft spot always, and make me miss that place. Big black baggie and all.

Well said SBBL. I too will miss the homer hankies waving in the bright blue seats, the noise, and the electric atmosphere in the playoffs. Minnesotans can certainly be loud, but are also some of the most polite sports fans in the country. Most of us respect the game and the fans around us. Unless they're White Sox fans:)
So there are some great memories that will be missed at the Dome, but we're ready to start new memories at the new ballpark in 2010. There are generations of Minnesota baseball fans that have never watched an MLB game outside. A lot of Minnesotans also feel inferior because of the Dome. We've watched ballparks get built in almost every city and it's gotten to the point where we are jealous. I am personally embarassed that our team has had to play in that building for so long. It's amazing what a nice ballpark can do for the morale of a community.
One more thing that people might not know about the Dome. There is so much pressure inside from the AC and what not, that when you exit through the revolving doors the pressure literally pushes you outside. It's a weird force that was fun when I was a little kid, even though it was actually pretty dangerous.

Every time I leave the Dome I make it a point to go out the regular doors (I think it's the regular ones that produce the wind effect instead of the revolving ones). I love getting literally blown out of the stadium -- that's a REALLY strong wind flowing through the doors due to the pressure difference effect. I almost wish they'd set up some sort of artificial wind exit at the new stadium. :-)
BTW, much to my surprise, I felt a similar-yet-reduced wind effect leaving Miller Park after a game this past month. Strange, since it's open-air (the roof doesn't provide a tight seal...and it was open that night, anyway).

Wow... I didn't even realize that it was going to be ready by 2010. I was just in Minneapolis photographing the other lesser known stadiums there this summer (the ballpark used for the North Central League and Siebert Field... will both be online by Christmas).
I saw them building a stadium near Siebert Field which was tremendous. What is that going to be? A new football stadium for the school?

Yes, we'll all have a twinge of missing the dome. Two World Series, several division pennants, Kirby and Hrbek, and all that. There were some good years in the dome, and hopefully one more. I still remember walking in there for the first time when I was 8 - that place was HUGE and AWESOME!!! Last summer, the wife and I went to a game with my brother and his two kids (3 and 5), and they seemed to like the place and had a good time. Which, I guess, means kids don't care too much about the "atmosphere" and "game-time experience" as us adults. They just want to have fun.
It's a big inflatable toilet, but it's OUR big inflatable toilet.

The dome was good in the 80s when no one knew how to retract and like others have said its good for football. The downside is it's too big for baseball like most multipurpose parks. We also now realize that the weather isn't as bad as people think so they will be fine with open air.
The best part of this place was little big league. My favorite underrated movie in all genres!

I for one, won't miss that dump of dumps at all. I saw games 1 and 2 of the 1987 AL Championship Series against the Tigers and Games 6 and 7 of the 1991 Wolrd Series against the Braves there. The teams will always be remembered by me, not the dumpy dome. I grew up with Metropolitan Stadium, and have always felt robbed when they moved out if it and into the Dome in 1982. When the day of demolition arrives, I'll be there to light the fuse, with a smile on my face. Can't wait till next year and Target Field, what a joy !!

This is the thread I should have searched for the other night. Hubert Horatio Humphrey, Jr. Metrodome. "Muriel and I have been married for 45 years now and I'm just pleased as punch!" what a guy! Too bad his name was put on a ball park which might have been approached with a little more esteem in the years to come. Say . . like a place like Target . . .

When I was younger, I used to see the Metrodome and that dome on TV and think, "How cool is that?!" baggies and all.
Through the years, I guess I acquired better taste ;) but I will never forget the intensity and noise that came out of that place come World Series time. For all Minnesotans, I'm sure that the Met will leave some great and fond memories. But, in a year, think of the pride and joy you'll all feel when one of the more distinguished parks in all of baseball opens.

I live in Cincy but i'm planning on catching a flight on a random weekend to come up and see the MetroDome in its final year. I think of all the domes, it is the most unique and actually has some character. I have always hated indoor baseball but i hope this place is at least a little exciting. Also, want to catch a St Paul Saints game while in town. Anyone have any advice/suggestions? Thanks!!

In honor of the last home opener at the Metrodome, WCCO-TV in Minneapolis has posted some of their 1982 TV reports from the day of the opening of the Dome.
A story on the opening during a particularly snowy April day:
http://www.wcco.com/video/?id=58172@wcco.dayport.com
A story on the controversy of building the Metrodome. This story shows an early seating chart concept that shows a little extra space for the field at one of the end zones (makes you wonder how that might have changed the baseball field if, as I suspect from the images, this alteration would have been along the left field fence and possibly deepened the outfield), plus an early model of the Metrodome with a slightly different exterior decoration:
http://www.wcco.com/video/?id=58174@wcco.dayport.com
Some highlights from the pre-game ceremony and a brief highlight from the first game itself:

Lafferty, I just reread your query this morning and realized I had "misinformed" you last week. I read your post too fast and was under the impression you were asking me about HHH Dome. Thinking of course, that perhaps you were having difficulties bringing it up on MVE . . . Beg a thousand pardons. I tried Target this morning and was unable as of yet to produce an aerial of it using MVE.

No prob, just make sure you take light rail (http://metrotransit.org/rail/index.asp) from the dome to the warehouse stop if you plan on walking. It will save alot of time, energy and effort, downtown traffic tends to be a tad unruly towards pedestrians. Plus its only 50 cents in the downtown area!

Gotcha. Do you know if it is a surviving piece of an old railway that they left there as a sort of monument?
Kind of odd for them to just build an archway that just stops if that was the case.
Looks cool, but a little weird though...lol

Nothing historical, or even old. Nothing was there. The whole thing was built as part of the LRT station about 10 years ago. There's actually a parking ramp underneath part of it. To the east/south, there's a large gathering plaza, with restrooms, etc. They left supporting post footings on the west/north side of the station to build a future building (whatever it may be).

I remember watching a Vikings "Monday Night Football" game back in the early days of the Metrodome, and they showed a guy in the crowd wearing a novelty hat that was shaped like the stadium that said "HUMP" on the front, and it had a straw attached to it so he could inflate the "dome". Anyone know if there are any of these hats left in captivity for sale as collector's items?

There are photos of the roof deflated from the April 5th issue of the St. Paul Pioneer Press, though it's only in the print edition (or the online PDF version, which requires a paid subscription).

April, 1983. Note the slightly-differently-colored roof panel above the right field upper deck -- I'd bet that it is a replacement panel for the one torn by the crane the previous November:

Great pictures. What's weird about the Metrodome is that it never went through any major renovation or anything. So it is hard to date a picture. I thought some of these pictures were taken last year. It really stayed clean throughout the years. It is the last of it's kind with the dome and all, and it is kind of an end to an era (or error) in Major League Baseball history. I will personally miss it, as I was always looking forward to seeing a game there. But Twins fans have waited a long time for a new ballpark, and a beautiful new one is in order.

For some reason, having never been there, or any of its clones like BC Place and the Hoosier/RCA Dome, I thought there was a possibility that the Metrodome contained only 1 concourse. The lower concourse must have a relatively low ceiling.

These are photos I took from the left field upper deck at Sunday night's Brewers-Twins game (the ESPN game). These show how you can see sunlight against certain parts of the Metrodome's roof, depending in the time of day.
First, looking up, in one of the thinner parts of the roof (the triangle section above the flag), you can see where the sunlight hits the roof and where the curve of the dome causes shadows from the setting sun.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3319/3575337322_9fcfba612e.jpg
Here, look at the zig-zag portions of the roof, where, again, the material is thinner. The lighter sections catch the sun, the darker ones do not.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3412/3575337550_2d016d27ef.jpg
This is looking towards the 3rd base line; from this angle, I'm looking WSW. Notice on the roof behind the lights, the dome is lighter except for a dark area in the middle: that's the shadow of a building from the setting sun.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3402/3574529265_f08dbb2734.jpg
Looking SSE towards the right field curtain. Notice how dark the roof is, since it's on the opposite side of the sunlight.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3314/3574529807_1a4843de63.jpg
Notice the small area of light on the roof in the middle of the picture. The sun is behind most buildings by this point, but a little sunlight is getting through to hit that part of the Dome.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2465/3575338662_51eaf0f771.jpg
Jumping back a little chronologically, this is looking SSW. Again, you can see how the roof is lighter the further west you look (behind home plate and the 3rd base side), due to the sunlight.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3331/3575338172_f602fbcfb2.jpg
Now, see how dark the roof is compared to the above photo looking towards homeplate. By this time, the sun has already set (as a side note, this photo was taken when Justin Morneau was crossing home plate after his grand slam).

Nice shots there, I guess I haven't paid much attention to the subtleties of the roof, I guess we can be thankful it isn't a solid opaque surface and at least lets SOME light in.
Also, at the game Wednesday they showed a cool little bit between innings on when they inflated the roof for the first time, kind of neat to see, apparently there was a decent sized crowd on top as they blew it up, that would be a very weird feeling I'm sure, especially at that height.

What about the trop?

Please forgive me if this was asked earlier up on the thread, but I like how they now have the pattern in the turf there.
How were they able to do that with the artificial turf? Is it just different shades of green to force the look?
primetime62
05-29-2009, 12:17 PM
Well there is a little length to the turf, I think they do it very similarly to on real grass. Instead of a mower they have a giant vacuum that they drive around with rollers on the back to bend the fibers (or what ever you would call them) in different directions.

Yeah, I hadn't really noticed that effect, either, until I went to a game a few years ago and realized how bright the roof was getting in the west during the evening. If I recall correctly, the first time I saw it, the lighting effect was even more pronounced. I think it was an August game, so the setting sun would have been more towards the west than in May, and the straight-on horizontal sunlight right before sunset would have had fewer buildings causing shadows.
If anyone gets to see an evening game in August/September or so, take note of the lighting effect and see if it's more dramatic.

Target Field will be one of the nicest new ballparks built. Twins deserve it.

I wouldnt say it was horrible. It served its purpose pretty well. If you sat in the infield the seats were pretty good, as were the left field outfield seats.
There were a lot of things wrong with the dome for baseball, but it wasn't the worst place to watch a game. It is definately more fun to watch a game at the dome when they have a good crowd

That was when people were financially responsible. I could have never imagined back then buying a hat for $25-30, and a jersey for $75 (without a name on it), or whatever the inflation adjusted prices would have been back then. Now people slap it on their credit card and worry about it another day. Looking at those pictures reminds us of a simpler time. People were alot skinnier back then, too :).

Yeah, probably. Personally, I don't mind buying sports apparel. I still have the same Twins hat that I bought in 1999, and the same Dodgers hat from 2001. I've always been a fan of the t-shirt jersey because they aren't as warm and are much cheaper. Recently I purchased a Justin Upton t-shirt jersey because he's my favorite young player.
To each's own though. I totally understand why you would rather spend money on other, more important things.

As far as the future of the Metrodome goes, there could be some short-term changes to make the Dome look more like the Vikings' home stadium and to give the Vikes some more revenue, now that it will soon no longer share occupancy with another major team.
http://kstp.com/news/stories/s1111080.shtml
The team is talking about painting the red columns outside the dome purple and gold—but that would be just the start.
The Vikings have also been given authority to sell sponsorships at each of the main gates, permission to expand an advertising marquee and keep all the revenue from it, and even the rights to sell advertising on the Dome's rooftop.
One thing that won't change is the Dome's official name—the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. But the Vikings have even been given rights to sell the naming rights to the playing field.
"For example you have Invesco Field at Mile High Stadium. You have a number of other examples around the country, so they could sell the name of the field," Leser said.
The Hubert Humphrey name has to stay attached to the dome because that's written in state law. But it won't be easy to sell field-naming rights here with a tough economy and the long-term future of the Dome is in question.
Stumbled on this while looking around...

I was reading a article on Yahoo sports yesterday ranking the NFL owners, when they were ranking the Zygi Wilf, the Vikings owner, the other owners were complaining about him wanting more revenue sharing in the NFL. If I am a Viking fan living in the Twin Cities, that sounds like he is willing to stick it out in the dome for a while instead of go running to LA once his lease expires.

MOA buys naming rights to Metrodome field
Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal - by Jennifer Niemela and Daniel Kaplan Staff Writer
http://www.kare11.com/assetpool/images/091001011025_mall.jpg
The Minnesota Vikings and the Mall of America announced Thursday that MOA has bought the naming rights for the field in at the Metrodome for the next three years.
The field will be called the Mall of America Field at Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome, and MOA will brand the dome’s exterior and interior signage and other promotional materials. The partnership will begin Oct. 5 and end Feb. 28, 2012.
“Branding the field as Mall of America Field represents an opportunity to share our name and image with an even larger nationwide audience,” said Maureen Bausch, executive vice president of business development at Mall of America. “It also connects two treasured Minnesota brands – Mall of America and the Minnesota Vikings – which adds value to both companies.”
The MOA naming rights begin on gameday between the Green Bay Packers and the Vikings, who host the Packers for Monday Night Football on Oct. 5.
The city of Minneapolis gave the team the right to sell field naming rights this year with the Vikings soon to be the only tenant left at the Metrodome. The University of Minnesota moved out earlier this year after the opening of TCF Bank Stadium and the Twins' last game at the facility is Sunday.
The Vikings lease runs out in 2011, so the team described the arrangements as a short-term rebranding effort.
This has to be one of the most obnoxious and in your face naming rights deal in the world.

It's all relative. At that time, people wanted no ads. So they really aren't classic. 20 years from now, people will look at pictures and want ads to be like that. Believe me, it will only get worse. We will soon see superimposed advertisements used profusely.

You would have though that with all this computer technology today, they could have changed the angles of the seats near the foul lines to face home plate for baseball with the push of a button so that people can enjoy the game without the need for tylenol. If I rember correctly Camden Yards has the same issue.

It's all relative. At that time, people wanted no ads. So they really aren't classic. 20 years from now, people will look at pictures and want ads to be like that. Believe me, it will only get worse. We will soon see superimposed advertisements used profusely.
Ads are almost as old as modern baseball itself.
Fenway's left-field wall was covered in advertisements long before it became the Green Monster.

Sooo...lemmie get this straight.
Tomorrow is possibly the final baseball game ever...
Then Monday night Favre plays against the Packers for the 1st time ever...
THEN Tuesday there is a possible one game playoff...
and if all that goes the Twins way, they'll play a home playoff game in a week or so...
Wow...what a way to send the place off.
To the people going tomorrow, enjoy. Having gone through almost precisely the same experience last year, take it all in. No matter what happens, you'll remember it for the rest of your life...
I have to admit though. As someone with essentially no rooting interest I almost HAVE to pull for the Tigers. I mean on top of the highest unemployment rate in the country, almost 30%...and now THIS...after seeing U of M have their worst season ever, the Lions go 0-16, and the Red Wings lose in Game 7 of the Finals???
I mean, DAYUM...I'm a METS FAN, and even I'm blown away by how bad Detroit has had it lately...
I know these are 'just games' and all, but it's really gonna start affecting the entire city's mental state if they blow this thing...

i see what ur saying but lets put this in a bigger perspective...for the last 30 years Minnesota sports overall has been pretty bad...the twins in 1987 and 1991...are the only two pro sport championships the twin cities have ever had...
yes, the lions suck but the vikings have never won a super bowl...minnesota (the state of hockey) lost its pro hockey team in the 1990s and neither the wild nor north stars ever won the cup....whereas the red wings have 4 cups recently, and 6 appearances in the finals.....the pistons have been dominant in the past couple of decades....and i don't even want to mention the wolves....and oh sad the wolverines suck, honestly it is about time....the gophers had been horrible since the early 60s...we haven't been to the rose bowl since then....and we are notorious for heart-breaking losses
however, I am with you on the unemployment thing...but still being a sports fan in the twin cities has been rough.....and when we actually have a good team it is like a godsend
and to top it off...we played in the metrodome...so even when the gophers were getting crushed by 55 to iowa...we couldn't enjoy the nice fall day or when the twins lost over 90 games in the late 90s we couldn't get a suntan
but now its a new day...and i cannot wait

the dome has kind of been like that one ugly girlfriend you had back in college...
initially you thought she was going to be awesome, while all drunk at a party one night...but you got into her and realized
1) she would never let you outside,
2) you had to put up walls just to make her decent enough to live with,
3) she was always so blue
4) she was really crazy...you couldn't ever predict how she would react in a situation
5) you never really wanted your friends to see her, cause well, she's not pleasant to look at (and a little saggy at times--1983)
6) sometimes she would obstruct your view of the ballgame
6) when she got your balls she never gave them back (Kingman)
7) she was kind of a slut, had football players over behind your back
8) and the carpet never matched the drapes
however, sometimes she was a great lay--and who can break up with that
1) every time you wanted to leave she would give you a good blow as you went out the door
2) she was really a cheap date--comparatively
3) when you and her got it on...she was f-ing loud...and who doesn't love that?
and of course best of all
4) she did the whole multiple orgasm thing--1987, 1991
we'll kind of miss her because she was so wild--but now we have this new super hottie, and....well...lets just hope she can hit all the same spots as HHH could

From ESPN's retrospective photo gallery of the Metrodome. I think this may be October 2, 1981: I was watching a video from the Twins website on Metrodome Memories, and one of the memories was the inflation of the Dome on that date. The people in the stands in the hardhats, the dirt-covered field and the slightly limp dome (notice it doesn't look completely inflated) look just like what I saw in that clip.

Shame on the Twins for having the closing ceremony after the game last night, all those fans were there to celebrate clinching a tie for the AL Central, forcing a one game playoff, in The Dome no less making the Final Game Festivites kind of moot, and in no mood to "say goodbye" to the Metrodome! Shame Twinkies, real shame!*
*That is a sarcastic response based on yahoos bashing the Mets for not doing last year's Shea Goodbye ceremony during the pre-game based on the Mets losing the game, and the chance to play more baseball at Shea in 2008!

I must admit and even though I will be pulling for the Rockies this post season, what an absolute "storybook ending" it would be if the Twins beat the Tigers from a approx 58-63 record about two months ago and ultimately "go all the way" . . . the absolute last year in the dome! Uncanny, that would be. I wonder, has that ever happened in history for a team to close out a ballpark with a WS Championship? Nothing comes to mind, right off. Cincy in '70? Sort of? They lost, but wasn't that the last year for Crosley?

Well, in a nutshell, that's what I'm saying. They would have to move the court to the middle and push back the grandstand on the other end, maybe have two temporary grandstands on each end of the court.

The MetroDome has always been one of baseball's most underrated baseball facilities. Someone once said, I think it may have been Bill Veeck, there's nothing more beautiful than seeing a baseball stadium filled. The dome looks great when it's filled because unlike the modern stadiums that have so many decks jutting in, out and every which way, and so many nooks and crannies, the Metro Dome is a simple two decked stadium that looks awesome when it's filled to capacity. When it's filled you see a sea of people, not a bunch of concrete like so many of the HOK cookie cutters.

I think the Twins are going to lose an edge after leaving the Dome. That place is LOUD!!!! It's not just the fans. Other cities have crazier fans. They are plenty loud and enthusiastic, but the sound gets amplified in the Dome. It most definitely is an advantage. My ears are still wringing from the game tonight.
I doubt very much that Target Field will be nearly as loud.

http://www.the700level.com/images/metrodome.jpg
Bottem line, you'll never see another FF at the 'Dome (and hosting first or second rounds is about all it's good for at this point) since the NCAA has boosted capacity requirements for FF venues to 70,000. Seeing as that disqualifies the 'Dome, the only chance the Twin Cities have of getting another FF is the Vikes getting a new roofed or retractable roof stadium...

That picture is not from a Final Four.
The court is not painted in FF colors, the banner on the scorers table does not say FF, and the sign to the right of the red arrow that says 'Villanova' is for their fan section, and they have never been in a FF at the Metrodome.

In the last photo (of the sound booth), you can clearly see that there are tons of empty seats as the court was pushed to one corner. Also, the artlcle states attendance was "50,000" for the FF, and this is the reason the Metrodome will never host another FF - even with the current standard of placing the court at mid-field: the NCAA wants 70,000+ seat venues. Add in that there are stadiums like Indy's new building, Ford Field, Cowboys Stadium, etc. that offer not only added seating, but amenities that far surpass what the 'Dome can offer...

I hear ya. I was a diehard Yankee fan my entire life and this year I lost interest because of the inferior new stadium and the destruction of American history across the street. When I started reading the Yankee Stadium threads this past spring I was so appalled at the arrogance I determined I could no longer root for the yankees, even on a casual basis for a team that attracts such a despicable fanbase.
Here's a little piece of advice...any time you get into a debate with a Yankee fan utter these two words...SALARY CAP...they'll take their ball and go home.

What were the grounds rules with the plexiglass? If the ball hit the clear part, was it in play or was it ruled a homer?

The turf was very hard during the first couple of seasons so they thought the plexiglass would prevent ground rule doubles.

Um... I know that the facility is going to be used quite a bit for college and high school baseball, so what's up with this? Especially when the Twins aren't moving the plate and rubber to Target Field?

and i think they removed it so quickly for security reasons. like no one can try and steal it. tho i think it would be a lil difficult to sneak a pic-ax in to the metrodome, they probly just dident wana take any chances

From a local news source the reason they dug up home plate and the mound, was to make the Metrodome into a permanent football facility. The dirt around home plate and the mound will be replaced by concrete. They will use a temporary clay mound and home plate similar to how the bases are.

You won't see views like this at Target Field. You won't see prices like that either.

It's too bad I never got to see a game at the Dome. I was always hoping to go one time. It is gonna rank up there in biggest regrets. Maybe ill see it for football, but it wouldn't be the same.

Most pro and college homeplates, if not all of them, have what is called an "anchor" to keep the plate from doing any shifting whatsoever. Otherwise, whenever someone slid into home or stepped on the plate, you risk have the plate move out of place and screwing up the strike zone.
I remember I first saw this when they dug up the homeplate at Memorial Stadium after the last game to transport it to Oriole Park. The ceremony had the plate being driven from Memorial Stadium to Oriole Park by limo. But as I recall it took the grounds crew forever to dig up the plate with its anchor. When the Diamondvision switched to Oriole Park 15 minutes later (that alone being dubious given traffic and lights), the crew at Oriole Park had one of those cheap little league plates which was obviously a stand-in until the actual plate could be dug in.

The turf was very hard during the first couple of seasons so they thought the plexiglass would prevent ground rule doubles.
I've also heard it was installed to appease the hockey fans. Make em' feel at home.
If I recall correctly, Kirby Puckett's famous catch in the 1991 series probably only saved an extra base hit, not a home run, since it would have otherwise bumped off the plexiglass. Had there been no plexiglass, it would have taken away a home run--that is, unless some Twins fan wanted to be Jeffrey Maier or Steve Bartman and screw Kirby up.
Still a great catch regardless.

Not kidding. I had a 2 game strip, it cost $12. $6 each game for a partially obstructed view
Getting to the game, I took the light rail. $3.50 round trip.
I spent more on hot dogs and coke than I spent on tix and transportation.

Ruthie would've been right at home in that dome. Looks like there's NO left field in that place. :D He'd be aiming right for that column(or the next one left of frame)!

Goodbye, Metrodome. Even though no no loves it, I've had more amazing baseball memories there than you can shake a stick at. It had it's own unique aura that I can't explain, something that Target Field will never have. The $6-8 cheap seats, the wind tunnel that developed after they let the air out of the dome, the giant blimp that would fly around the upper deck and drop stuff on people, Dome Dogs, the giant milk jug, the honor of being the loudest baseball stadium, the awesome field dimensions, walking around behind the giant banner in center field, seeing my Twins clinch a playoff spot in 06 vs. the Royals, being at the epic 3 game series last year vs. the White Sox ( I got to see Ken Griffey hit a homer and see a guy run onto the field and try to high five Carlos Gomez), being at the epic 3 game series vs. the Royals this year (against Zack Greinke no less)... I could go on. No disrespect on Target Field though, it looks like one of the best in the league and I am pumped to attend a game there next year. But the Dome will hold a very special place in my heart.

Yea there's a lot I'm going to miss. The team has had a lot of success at the Dome, who's to say they ever win another world series? We got two while we played in a bubble. Casey calling out Puckett's name as it echos in building still sends shivers down my spine.

I love this revisionist "lots of success" at the 'Dome crap just because they've had a nice "run" (in a crappy division) in the last eight years...
You know, there was a lot more terrible baseball played in that building than good. Like, say, '82 (60-102), '83 (70-92), '84 (81-81), '85 (77-85), '86 (71-91), '89 (80-82), '90 (74-88), '93 (71-91), '94 (53-60), '95 (56-88), '96 (78-84), '97 (68-94), '98 (70-92), '99 (63-97), '00 (69-93) and even '07 (79-83).
Let's see, by my count, that's 12 winning seasons and 15 losing seasons (and 8 of those 90+ loss seasons with one over 100 losses)...

I was at the Metrodome once. It was for the NCAA Tournament 1st Round when I was in the pep band for Central Connecticut State University in 2000. It was some game, because as a #15 seed they almost beat #2 seed Iowa State.

For a small market team, that's a damn good run. It had a tremendous amount of success considering all the factors involved. And winning seasons are far less indicative of real success than playoff runs, which the Twins have had plenty.

Orioles fans would be begging to have a nice run in a crappy division over the past 8 years. I'm sure the same can be said for Pirates, Royals and Nationals fans.

well, I see you've found the record books and have corrected me. Clearly they were a horrible team in a horrible building in a horrible market. Maybe, but two world series titles in the last 25 years is something I'm proud of. There are a lot of better teams in better buildings in better markets that don't share that success.

Clearly the other poster said that the Twins had a lot of success at the dome.
THEY DID! THey didn't have it every season, but to say that they didn't have a lot of success is REVISIONISM! Two world series in a building that was around only 27 years is a pretty good run. They had a lot of great teams that didn't make the play offs but were still very competitive. They had a lot of teams make the playoffs buy didn't go all the way.
No the Metrodome isn't a horrible building. Its a silly building. It's awkward. But that is why I love it. It entirely unique and 70s retro. I was proud to have gone to what was likely the very last game in an inflatable dome in baseball history.
If you didn't like it, fine! But don't beat others up because they do and have the nerve to disagree with you.
This is coming from a totally unbiased source. I'm a lifelong Tiger fan, now living in Minneapolis who just started going to games at the Metrodome this year. I love the place! It's quirky, it's unique and it's not a HOK cookie cutter that looks like every other stadium in the league. Relax and let people disagree with you. Trust me, it doesn't hurt one bit!

I have a hard time finding anything nice to say about the Dome other than it was extremely functional, and probably gave more of a return on investment than any other publicly financed ballpark/stadium.
That being said, I'm glad it's run is over for baseball. An absolutely AWFUL place to watch baseball.

the wind tunnel that developed after they let the air out of the dome
I was always disappointed when they only let people out via the revolving doors rather than the regular ones that had the wind push you out. My dad and I joked that people won't know how to exit Target Field, everyone will just stand at the doors wondering what to do, lol. We said they should install a huge fan just for kicks.

A dumb question that maybe deserves a dumb answer, but I'll ask anyway.
Why not hold some postseason games here in the future that are threatened by weather? Should the Twins make it to the postseason, and there is a chance of a rain/snow out, or if the weather is uncomfortably cold, move it indoors!
See, the metrodome era doesn't have to end!

Yes, it does have to end.
Reasons: Equipment, logistics and cost. THey won't have any of their locker or training equipment there. Equipment you even need during the game. THey won't have a lease. So last minute rain outs or weather related cancelations would be dependent on scheduling at the dome. It would be almost impossible to set up a contract for a one day event at the last moment, contracts with vendors and concessions and plan the security and safety logistics as well as insurance. Plus lost revenue in the new stadium you are paying off. Ticket price differences between the two stadiums and potential revenue. As well as lost revenue for stadium advertising. Plus expense of preparing the field. It won't any longer be set up as a major league field.
Not to mention, once you establish the team at Target field, playing at the dome would be almost like being on the road in a stadium that isn't yours.
The Metrodome era is over. It would be like moving to a new house and thinking that once in a while you'd still like to use the pool in the one you just moved out of. It's not going to happen.

Interesting concept, but I doubt practical. As much as I think the Vikings hate the Metrodome, I still doubt they would want to share it any longer than they have to. Plus you could argue that the Twins would try to get an unfair playoff advantage by playing in the Dome--remember how much the place worked to their advantage in 1987 and 1991 and how loud and intimidating it was those years?
That being said, I've always wondered the same for the Marlins once they move out of Joe Robbie. It would be great to use Joe Robbie for the postseason because you'd get to have 67,000 fans as opposed to just 37,000 in the new ballpark. But that's just not going to happen.
