I want to see what folks think of the work of various incarnations of the Veteran's Committee. We've already got threads on the "Lee Allen" VC and the "Frankie Frisch" VC. Eventually, I'll report the results of all the polls.

This group voted in a raft of players, in 1945-46 per Baseball-reference.com. You can consider the entire contributions of the players, such as Fred Clarke, Hughie Jennings, Tommy McCarthy, and Frank Chance, as the HOF arguably did.

I think Fred Clarke is the only one of these who can get in on playing merits alone.

Hugh Jennings is close to getting in based only on playing, but his entire contributions clearly put him in for me.

I don't think Frank Chance gets in only for playing by a long shot. I didn't vote for him here, but maybe I could have based on his entire contributions. Even considering his entire contributions I'm on the fence.

Tommy McCarthy I just can't see in.

--Chance was both the best player AND the manager of the greatest dynasty of the deadball era. That is a pretty good HoF case all by itself.

I respect that, and wasn't actually campaigning for the named guys, but pointing out that they certainly have more than just their play to support their selection. If I limited people to simply considering their play, it could skew the results unfairly given what the committee actually considered.

I think that several of the pitchers were the best players of that team.
And that Chance's best years were before the team won the pennants.
During the dynasty, Chance was the best position player sometimes, but not always and not always by a clear margin.

On the basis of playing alone, I voted for Collins-considered by some for years the best 3bman ever, and Plank. Others deserve consideration on overall contributions.

The only ones I have a real problem with are Chesbro, Tinker, Evers, and McCarthy. Luke warm on Collins, Bresnahan, and jennings.
