I have a 32/29 easton CXN that I really like, just dont like the thick handle, how can I make it a thin handle like a wood bat? is that legal in highschool? I heard something about athletic tape and pine tar how do I do that? any other ideas? i hear a thin handle also gives you more batspeed.

it doesnt really give you batspeed. it just gives u a thinner handle which feels better than a thick one. the only (legal) way to do it with pinetar is to remove the synthetic grip and do a barberpole tape scheme on the handle and put pinetar on it the tape holds the pine tar on

I am unceratin under which rules you play, but the NFHS states "A non-wood bat must have a safety grip of cork, tape, or composition material."

Rule 1-3 Art. 3

Yea i know but what if you put like one layer of tape then pine tar on it? I like thin handled bats its just a preferance.

As long as it has tape on it it sounds legal.

Remove The grip and take a Thin layer of athletic tape

Then you can go nuts with pine par.

Take the grip off then just wrap it in tape then apply pine tar

I love pine tar. I've made a nice stain on my helmet and tarred up my bat pretty nice (wood), looks like Troy Glaus' bat.

Well the question is what pine tar is good to use? I got the All-Star brand pine tar and that stuff was more like motor oil! No stick to it at all! I actually threw the bat a couple of times due to it being so slippery. The only one that I know of being good is the Easton pine tar BUT I can't find it anywhere.

Ya we use the Easton pine tar and the Louisville stick one.

Keys to pine tarring a bat:

Apply "Manny Mota Stick" or Louisville Pine Tar stick first.

Apply pine tar from pine tar rag. Applying the liquid directly to the bat is pointless. Pine tar needs to "age" a bit. Put it on one of those pine tar rags that Easton sells, and let it sit in there a bit. Then apply it. It'll be so sticky you'll have to peel the rag off.

Apply rosin on top of that.

Let the bat sit for a day or so. Repeat as needed. You'll have a good "base" of pine tar on it and you can then add more from the rag and apply rosin as needed in the on deck circle.

Enjoy.

If you really want to get "good pine tar" go to ebay and search pine tar. Specialty stores that deal in woods and wood boats will sell it in quarts or pints. Usally in a jar with an applicator brush of some sort. That's the stuff I switched to. Just apply it, and throw some rosin on it and its ready. Stuff is unreal and makes the pine tar that easton or the others sell look like motor oil.

does the rule specify the enitre handle needs to be covered with tape?

Sorry to get off of the rule topic, but what I have started to do, is get the stock grip off of the bat then take some sort thin, but not too thin rope like stuff, I used tinsel (the real stuff not the silver Christmas stuff) and wrap the tinsel or whatever around the bat, then take athletic tap and wrap it over that, and that way you can create grooves for your fingers. It feels great when you get it right and your fingers just fall onto the bat and grip themselves.

Or you can take the tape and peel off a bit so its still attached to the roll and hold one end of the tape and sping the roll so the tape makes like a sausage like in play-doh lol. You can wrap that around the handle then tape over. That's what we do with hockey sticks. I'm sorry if I'm not clear but if there's any further explanaition needed I'll try and clarify.

For wood bats is there limit as to how high the tape on the handle can come? It's a 2 tone bat and the tape comes just below where the handle colour changes to the barrel colour. Also I didn't like the balance in 1 of my bats so I put tape on the knob now its oversized. Is this legal?

I know in MLB 18" not a drop more. And usually where the 2 tone meets should be 18"

Thanks. And for the knob? Is there no limit as to how big it can be?
