View Full Version : video of swing
Here are some videos of my son's swing. We have been trying to get a stride and more hips into it for power. Any suggestions or drills that would help him?

Sorry they are sideways. I am not sure how to rotate them.

If you have Windows Movie Maker, you can bring them in and flip them, and even add them to one file.
Neat thanks

Joe, it is difficult to tell much with the clips you posted. They are difficult to stop to see a frame at a time.
Overall he looks good for what I assume to be 7 y/o or so?
The first thing I would suggest is shelve hitting for power. If you focus on power younger kids tend to do whatever is necessary to hit the ball further, even if it includes bad technique. I would focus on making contact with good technique - not hitting for power.
I would also suggest lowering the tee. If you are looking to develop a good rotational swing you should start with the ball slightly lower than his waist and teach him to stay connected.
Thank you for the advice Jake. I guess power is a bad way to put it, but previously he was only swinging with his arms.
He likes imitating player stances so if I can get a video of him in proper technique I think it would help. The arching of his back after the swing is from Matt Diaz.
I will try a lower tee for some practice. I'll also try to learn some new video techniques. Is it the frames/second on my camera or the encoding process that is deficient?

As he makes his move toward the ball he continues to drop his hands and then makes a weak push up toward the ball. Slight upswing is correct, but not this way. His first approach toward the ball needs to be down, then slightly up...Your son is dropping his hands and then pushing up.
1. Lower the tee.
2. As he is loading have him raise his hands and load his right elbow behind him. If he is not comfortable raising his hands have him start his hands in a higher position and then lower them to roughly shoulder hieght (right elbow still needs to load toward the 3rd base dugout.)
3. Tell him to swing down to the ball, and then finish high.
4. Every word said to him needs to build him in some way. If he loads his hands and upper body wrong, comment on his good footwork. If his hands drop and he pushes his bat uphill, comment on having good head position and then address the drop.
He is only 6 1/2 years old, 50" and 50 lbs of intensity. When I get home he wants to do a 3-5 practice innings of baseball and now football season has started. He always crushes me and he has decided that I am the Raiders tonight. The bat is a 26" and -12 14 oz tee ball bat. Is it too large?
Unfortunately, I haven't played baseball since early little league or otherwise goofing off with friends, so that is why I seek advice. The threads here have been very helpful. When I was little they always said to keep your back elbow up. Is this a useful que anymore?

It is a .wmv file. But he is upright now.

Edited to say:
Please ignore, I didn't see the clips were fixed earlier in the thread.:waving

1. take a shorter stride. Balance is the key. The step is nothing more than a trigger for the rest of the motion to engage.
2. Keep the hands up and swing down on the ball. This will increase bat speed and swing consistency. I recommend that he keeps his hands slightly moving.
3. Keep his head still and eye on the ball throughout. You want as little motion as possible.
4. The object is to keep the hands back and drive the ball in one transfer motion with the hips and hands in concert engagement.

It's statements like these that create really bad swings.
Swing down when, and how far into the swing?
Keep the hands back where? And, for how long?
2. If by "swing down" you mean that the bathead should make contact with the ball at an angle heading toward the ground, you are sadly mistaken. If you mean, start the hands down to avoid a loop backward or a drop toward the back hip, then you are closer to correct.
4. If you mean push the hands back toward the catcher, you are wrong. If you mean, keep the hands back near the back shoulder as you rotate, then you are correct.
How would you expect that a person who knows little about a swing, or a 7 year-old kid, would understand what you meant. When you tell a 7 year-old to swing down, he WILL swing the bathead at the ground. Is that what you really mean? I hope not.
