He's having hip surgery. They think he'll be ready for spring training, although they didn't say in which year:sorry:

Yeah, this really is big news, I kinda guessed he wasn't gonna play this year.

I hope he's the player we know again next year, otherwise... :sorry:

I hate to say "I told you so..." to all those who were campaigning to get rid of Dimitri Young earlier this year but...sometimes the trades a team DOESN'T make are the best ones of all.

By July it looked like a certainty that Nick wasn't coming back this year. Resigning Dimitri was an insurance policy in case Nick doesn't come back at all. If he does, they can move Young to another position :nosleep: , or trade either him or Nick. I'd rather have a healthy Johnson than Dmitri; he had more power, a higher OBP, and was better defensively. The question remains whether he can come back and be that player again.

No argument here-I just thought that some on this board were too willing to dump Dimitri when there was no guarantee that Johnson would be returning.

I'm a big Nick Johnson fan as well and was hoping he'd recover soon enough to be productive this season. He always seems to have injury issues though.

Any idea how much time he's spent on the DL since his major league career started?

That's a shame. Johnson was developing nicely in '06 before the injury. The Nats never thought the injury was as severe as it turned out to be. I can't say that I agree with the poster who said he preferred Nick to Dmitri Young, however. Young has succeeded beyond anybody's wildest dream this year and deserved his place on the all-star team as opposed to being someone who was selected just to satisfy the "at least one player from each team" rule.

That's too bad. He seems like a great player and I do hope he can get better at the start of spring.

I kind of had a feeling he'd be out awhile when I first saw the injury and heard the talk about it. I definitely didn't think they'd be back as soon as he said, though I thought he would play this season, I figured he'd be back around this time. I know it was a really bad injury but should it really take him longer than a year to recover from a broken leg?
