Rules

Only players listed on the ballot are eligible for election.
Players appearing on the ballot last played anywhere from 1912-1940.
Players named on 75% of the ballots will be inducted.
A voter may vote for 0-10 candidates.
There is no ineligibility rule for “banned” players. Nor is there a minimum 10 seasons played rule for eligibility.
The 5% and 15 years-on-the-ballot-and-done rules will begin with the 1950 ballot to be fair to the earliest retirees on this ballot.
The 5-year wait is in effect.
Retain the “no automatic induction” rule.
Eligibility rules are not waived in case of premature death of a candidate.
Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played.
Each annual election is open for ballot submission Monday to Friday. Results are announced over each weekend.
Anyone may vote by posting their ballot in the thread.

I think you want to update this line each "year". It should now say "1912-1940".

General comments on this process so far -- just abstract impressions, no criticism of anyone's votes or of any particular players ought to be inferred:

(A) There are a lot of worthy HOFers (at least as it's been defined in real life) on this ballot. I'm not going to bother to construct a list, but I could easily have a 20 or 25 person ballot that I'd think are all worthy. (Others have higher standards...so be it.)

(B) Given that, it seems to me that the biggest obstacle towards a number of people getting 75% is the 10-person ballot maximum. There might be a guy with HOF support who ends up being everyone's 11th or 12th choice, and thus his support is dramatically underrepresented. The 10 ballot maximum is the "small Hall" partisan's best friend.

(C) In response to this, I've begun to vote strategically. I might personally prefer Player A to Player B, but if Player B's got a shot and I don't outright oppose Player B, it make sense to get Player B out of Player A's way. I suspect this happens in real life...the concept of a player gaining "momentum" in the voting.

(D) Also, I suspect I see an overcorrection in the BBF electorate voting. Real-life Cooperstown is overrepresented with gray area guys who had big years circa 1930, for reasons we well understand (inflated BA's and RBI's; the Frisch and Terry VC's, etc.) We're resisting voting for these guys, including some who IMHO are not particularly close calls, in favor of gray area guys who had big seasons in the dead ball era. Are we outsmarting ourselves in some cases? (Not necessarily a rhetorical question.)

(E) I'll also be the first to admit that my own ballots have been a little inconsistent. That's been more time pressure than anything else (I've been out of town a lot this summer, and catching up when I'm not)...if I were doing these once a year instead of once a week, I'd be more rigorous. But of course, we'd never finish. No simulation is perfect. Now that I'm voting strategically, they're probably about to get more inconsistent.
