...to make Uncle Charlie look good. It's like the fat girl hanging with the cute blonde.... Sort of, although neither of these guys constitute a cute blonde.

Pat Burrell out at the plate minutes ago by 10 feet and not even reaching the plate with his slide was nothing short of laughable. Does anyone EVER remember Vuk getting guys thrown out at this rate and not scoring guys when they should like Smith? He is the WORST 3B coach in baseball, bar none! The second worst in Phillies history and the worst is who he replaced.

:debate:

I don't have ESPN but I just checked the score online. It said Werth singled, Rollins scored, Burrell thrown out at the plate. I kind of knew it must have been ugly.

Burrell would have a tough time scoring from third on a single.

He was on second and running all the way because it was a full count and he STILL was out and they went to a commercial before he even ended his slide! I'm not sure he ever did reach the plate! It was a JOKE!

That was pretty bad. Burrell still hasn't reached home plate yet. But later Jayson Werth tried to score & he embarassed himself even more. Instead of making contact with the catcher, he ran around him, expecting to go back & touch the plate. I guess he thought McCann wouldn't realize what he was trying to do.

I guess we shouldn't complain, the Phillies still won the game despite the two bone-headed baserunning decisions by Burrell & Werth.

I was laughing too hard after Werth's escapades to re-post. He DID evade McCann long enough to make sure the runners moved up to second and third though. But I wonder what would have happened had he barrelled McCann over instead of stepping around him.

The Burrell thing was pretty brutal. When the camera followed Francoeurs throw all the way to Mccann's glove, you couldn't even see Pat in the frame, and then he came in, and gave it a good slide:laugh. It was a bad scene. Atleast Werth was entertaining, Burrell was just awful.

Is it Burrell's fault he's slow? Did he just become slow? Smith is the one who is awful! He should know Francoeur can throw and Burrell can't run!

It is surprising that they ran on Franceour. Obviously not very bright either.

You'd think the law of averages would say Smith would get it right half the time, but he is NEVER right. He stops runners when a gimp is throwing and sends the slowest of runners (read two lumbering white guys named Burrell and Werth) when one of the better OF arms is throwing.

On the other hand, Larry Bowa is regarded as one of the better 3B coaches in baseball. Go figure.

What's the "go figure" part? John Vukovich was a GREAT 3B coach and Bowa was a notch below him. Smith isn't even within the realm of either of those guys.

It's just ironic how it worked out. Of course, being the ex-manager, ML protocol somewhat dictates that he couldn't be the 3B coach in Philly.

Oh I agree completely, especially against Francoeur, as mentioned earlier in this thread.

One thing I've noticed since I've been watching the Phils, is that Smith seems to be pretty aggressive, he likes to send them alot. He was a little too eager sunday night and made the same mistake twice.

I think over all, being aggressive with this type of team is good policy, but with Burrell they just were foolish.
