Vlad will, at least he can play his defensive position.

Vlad can play defense.
But iŽm a very very big Piazza fan, so this is a no doubter to me ;)
And btw: Piazza will leave the MLB as the catcher with the most HRs, so heŽll be probally more remembered than Vlad.

Piazza is the greatest hitting catcher of all-time. Granted he isn't much of a defender but in this age of station-to-station baseball that isn't that big of a liability.

Vlad hasn't reached the Top Ten as an offensive RFer. And defensively, despite the powerful arm, he is really just average.

Sockeye, please stop creating these threads, or at least demonstrate your opinion in them, they are truly becoming a nuisance and a source of annoyment.

I agree...for some reason my reaction was to vote for vladdie, but in hindsite it has to be Piazza...he's just too good for his position (whether or not he played it effectively on defense)

Piazza because nobody else in history has put up similar numbers as a catcher. Vlad is an amazing player, and a future Hall of Famer; but in baseball history there have been other outfielders who were better.

FYI - this thread would more appropriate in the "History of the Game" section. Anyway, I think Piazza will go down as the better player. While it's true that Vlad is/was better defensively at his position than Piazza was, Piazza played the much more crucial position. Does anyone think Vlad could've played a mediocre catcher or shortstop for ten seasons, much less kept up his offensive production while doing it? Not me. Conversely, if you put Piazza in right field, I think he'd have reached 500 homers. I realize that's a crude comparison, but I hope its point is well-received: Piazza is by far the best offensive player ever at a very tough position, while Vlad is a mid-level HOF caliber offensive player at a relatively easy position that has historically been filled with sluggers.

This pretty much sums my opinion up. Piazza for me. Defence in RF is very handy, but not going to make a huge difference overall. Id take an average catcher over a good RF'er with equal offence.
