Left-hander Ross Detwiler, the Nationals' first-round pick in the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, pitched four shutout innings and gave up one hit against the Gulf Coast Dodgers on Friday afternoon. He struck out five and walked two.

General manager Jim Bowden said that Detwiler will be promoted and pitch for Class A Potomac sometime next week.

Already going to be in High A ball by next week. He could be in the majors next year.

Met him tonight at the Nats-Keys game. Very nice kid. He's starting Thursday night at Harry Grove stadium in Frederick. Be there if you can.

I remember reading an article shortly after he was drafted about how he was on the fast track to the bigs and could reach the majors by this season as a sept. call up. That would be what, 3 drafted players to reach the majors their first year in 6 years for the Nationals?

That can happen on a bad team when there's nobody good ahead of you to block your way.

Detwiler may have risen to his current skill level already. He made is his high A debut last night with Potomac, and got hit pretty hard, giving up two runs on 8 hits in 4 2/3. He didn't walk anyone, but hit one batter.

Afterwards, he was quoted as saying. "I had to focus in on every batter and every pitch," he said. "You can't pitch the ball up. In college and in the GCL, I could get away with it, but up here it kind of hurt me."

One start isn't an accurate barometer for his "current skill level" at all.

There are a few on the fast track including reliever Adam Carr. Carr was a 2006 round pick moved up to Harrisburg last week after posting a 3-1 record at Potomac with a 1.81 ERA and 13 saves. He was a 2006 draft pick and may be the heir to Cordero if he is traded. Be interesting to see how fast track they move Aaron Suess who is tearing up at Vermont. Colton Willems is putting up impressive numbers with a sub3.00 ERA. As much as Montreal and MLB screwed us int he farm system, this franchise has some serious pitching prospects.
