Neifi Perez was suspended a while back for amphetamines. He was just about ready to return. Not so fast...

Perez out 80 games after failing third drug test

One day before his initial suspension was due to expire, Tigers infielder Neifi Perez was suspended by Major League Baseball for a second time.

This suspension – for a third positive amphetamines test, under MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program – will last 80 games and likely signal the end of his Detroit career.

Perez became the first big leaguer disciplined under baseball’s new amphetamines policy, when the commissioner’s office announced July 6 that he had been suspended for 25 games.

MLB began testing for stimulants last year. Perez’s first positive test did not result in a penalty, but subjected him to six unannounced tests over the next 12 months. One of those tests resulted in the initial 25-game suspension; another appears to have yielded this latest suspension.

It’s not clear precisely when, or how far apart, the three positive tests took place.

Perez, who will forfeit roughly $1.25 million of the $2.5 million he was due to earn this year, will be a free agent after the season. Given his production – a .172 batting average – and two suspensions, it is highly unlikely Perez will return to the Tigers in 2008.

Perez’s primary contribution to Detroit was as a defensive shortstop. His most memorable moment as a Tiger was the diving stop to start the double play that preserved Justin Verlander’s no-hitter in June.

poor guy, he has no power and is banned because of doping. All the big HR-Players take steroids or other things, and who is banned?

A contacthitter to show the world that mlb and Bud Selig are sooo good in capturing and penalizing those dopers...

its a joke.

Yes it is, how about we see Mr. Bonds' results get released to the public.

Who gives a damn about Neifi Perez, he was never too good to begin with.

Well, my guess is that he was trying to land a major league job again and he's taking the junk to try to make himself better.

Maybe he should just retire.

Sweet, so maybe us average players should be allowed to use whatever the heck we want because who "gives a dam" about us? Maybe the league should only test test the really good players that have a chance a breaking a record.:laugh

Anybody know how long amphetamines stay in your system? If it's any less than the amount he was originally suspended for (25?), then yes, he is a contender for the dumbest player ever.

If the Tigers make the playoffs, which they should, would he be suspended for that too? I realize that Leyland would probably leave him off the playoff roster anyways but I was wondering....

Why is it a joke? The big-HR players are tested as well-and they haven't tested positive. Perez has. Are you suggesting they should not punish him just because he isn't a power hitter?

He deserves it. He should be banned from the game.

Hilarious. I wonder if there's still people who think Amphetamines are the same as a cup of starbucks coffee? I mean, if they were, why would Mr. Perez test positive THREE times for a banned drug, that's known to have negative side-effects? :crazy

I have heard different lengths of time than those given in the following link, though I guess they're good approximations.

My guess was he took them AFTER his last suspension ended.:dismay:

Either that, or he's has actually got a drug problem and instead of our vilification and scorn he should get some support and help for it.
It seems many people forget that ball players are human as well and aren't immune to the problems that effect the rest of society.

No, they should be villified. Regular people with drug problems are idiots too for starting with the drugs in the first place.

I am sick of the politically correct bullcrap where people do things like call addiction a disease.

I don't think it's a disease personally (it is a choice that they make to begin with), I just think that Neifi shouldn't cop any more criticism for his addiction than anyone else on the streets would. Whilst regular people are generally idiots for starting they aren't vilified for it to the extent that athletes and entertainers are.

Without going into it specifically, chances are we have a very similar point of view in regards to this.

Perez says that medicine is cause of positive tests (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2960857)

"Many people might be trying to understand how is it possible that a player tests positive for the same substance three times in half a season," Perez said. "The truth is that they tested me four times between May 10th and June 1st and they never told me if there was anything wrong. I have been using that same medicine all this time."

Perez said that by the end of last season, he could not focus on games and visited a psychologist, who diagnosed him with ADHD and prescribed him Adderall, an amphetamine.

Perez claims that the team gave him the medicine and he used it at the end of last season, including during Detroit's playoffs and World Series run. But when spring training began, Perez finished his dose and the doctors gave him a new prescription.

"I went to two different drug stores and they wouldn't sell me the medicine, so someone from the team told me I could use any amphetamine and I started using something else," said Perez. "They tested me during spring training and everything was negative. But then in May I guess I tested positive, but they never told me there was something wrong.

"Even twice, they only tested me, when the regular procedure is to test at least four or five players."

Well he's done. We'll probably find him on the Long Island Duck's roster in the next few weeks.
