It was in eventful day, but for every winner, there's likely to be a loser. Which team did the worst job for itself?

Hands down, Luis Castillo to the Mets.
The Twins gave him away.

The Betemit -Proctor trade still has me confused.... I don't see where the Yankees felt they had the bullpen arms to spare to get a .231 hitter for a backup first baseman.

He's a UFA at season's end, they couldn't of gotten much more out of him...

I wasn't real amused with the Royals trading Octavio Dotel for a guy who aspires to be AAA cannon fodder.

Honestly - I don't know what the Pirates were doing. Matt Morris? Are they trying to win the division this year or something?

It will make sense if A-Rod ops out of his deal at the end of the year.
Other than that, I have no idea what Cashman was thinking with this one. Seriously, Proctor wasn't as good as he was last year but he still wasn't terrible. Especially when you consider the other trash the Yankees have in the bullpen right now. I honestly see no way that this deal can make the Yankees a better team right now. Proctor was a steady arm out of the pen. Betemit might not even be a quality bat off the bench. He was only hitting .231 with the Dodgers.
What are the Pirates and Giants doing making trade deadline deals with each other for? The Pirates Management is just plain stupid. Matt Morris now makes 1/6 Pirates payrol?

Yankees are probably going to call up Joba Chamberlain.

I wouldn't exactly call Davis a "prospect" hes like 28 if I remember correctly, the deal was puzzling nonetheless especially since they're paying his contract. I went with the Castillo deal though.

I'm sure they are...but gosh, doesn't it seem like they're going to be placing an awful lot of pressure on a kid who started the season in Rookie Ball?

Your replacing A-rod with a .231 hitter?

Essentially the Pirates signed a 10 million dollar 4th starter for next year. This is a team with a great new ballpark and some history but inept ownership/management. I feel bad for their fans after this move. Its not about what they gave up, its about all that salary to Matt Morris.
Easily the worst move.

I don't know if it was the fire lighting incident or what, but the Yanks managed to pull off the DUMBEST trade of the year. I guess his 3.81 ERA, and the fact that he was headed for 80 IP this season and the fact that he picked up a lot of the slack from the pen was worth sacrificing for a rbelow average, low talented utility IF that gives Miguel Cairo a run for his money on his BEST days. The again, a good reliever doesn't really seem to fit well in the Yankee's pen these days.
I think Brian Cashman is dyslexic, he was supposed to trade junk for bullpen help, not vice-versa. Don't look too hard for the logic here, you'll only frustrate yourself.
To: Joba Chamberlain- Not to put any pressure on you, but you had better be the 2nd coming of Dave freakin Righetti to justify this move. I guess the Yanks are excited after you didn't allow a run after a whopping 6 IP in AAA. Farnsworth and Villone are happy to go 6 pitches without allowing a run. Best of luck to you.
All kidding aside, Cashman's an idiot.

The worst move was Castillo. The Twins could possibly make the playoffs with a winning streak. They are only 5-6 games back I believe. He would have been a free agent, but so what?

I agree... I think the all the trades mentioned in the poll are crazy but I think the Pirates adding Morris and that salary is the worst of them all.. It really make no sense at all:noidea

so because at this point in the season he is 36/156 it makes him a .231 hitter? No, that is what he is "hitting". Stop being so hung up on stats, do you really think that Cashman makes trades on one stat?

Ya, please don't be naive. Wilson can't fill Arod's shoes. Wilson would fill Arod's spot at 3b. They never said Wilson would fill Arod's production.

But why chip away at playoff chances this season for an inadequate, potentially unnecessary replacement player for next season?

Do you honestly think that a slightly below average, over worked reliever is going to have that much of a positive impact on a playoff race?

Agreed, all three trades make no sense to me. But the one that is the most puzzling to me is the Pirates trading for Morris.

Not sure if you're directing this at me, but...
Do I think that the trade of Proctor could have a real impact on NY's chances of making the playoffs, given the fact that up to this point, Proctor has pitched more innings than anyone else out of NY's bullpen? Yes, I do.

the pirates are going to use matt morris to trade to another team for a secret prospect they've been wanting from another team
a post deadline trade
its going to be nuts
just watch...
okay... probably not, i'd agree this the dumbest move of all time!

Of all time? You've obviously never heard of the infamous Glenn Davis deal.
The Orioles got:
Glenn Davis -- injured, never played more than 103 games in a season in Baltimore, retired three years after being traded.
The Astros got:
Pete Harnisch -- made the All-Star game his first year in Houston, had a few more good seasons later in his career
Curt Schilling -- after one season in Houston, went to Philadelphia and became a near-certain HoFer.
Steve Finley -- went on to rack up 2375 hits, primarily with Houston and San Diego.

Oh there have been some crap trade deadline deals that have gone down in the past:
Cubs trade Lou Brock to the Cards for Ernie Broglio (June 15, 1964)
Red Sox send Jeff Bagwell to Houston for reliever Larry Andersen (Aug. 31, 1990)
A's send Mark McGwire to Cardinals for pitchers T.J. Mathews, Eric Ludwick and Blake Stein (July 31, 1997)
Cardinals send Keith Hernandez to Mets for pitchers Neil Allen and Rick Ownbey (June 15, 1983)
Just a few good ones:)

Can't forget Heathcliff Slocumb for Jason Varitek and Derek Lowe.. Thanks for the world championship.
By the way, I would hardly call Scott Proctor a below average reliever.. Had he not been overworked, he could have been a solid 3 ERA guy. Now another reliever will have his arm shot off by Torre.
By the way, I vote Pirates.

Rookie league is the GCL short season teams, no? Joba started in A+ Tampa.
