See my question in the "trade deadline" thread. To save time, it boils down to what does Boston need another reliever for?

Really, I mean they have Okajima and Papelbon, why the heck do they need to give up valuable players for an injury-prone Gagne? Hopefully this doesn't go through

Well, Okajima and Papelbon are great guys to have, but you need to add to them. Outside of those two, Boston still has a really strong bullpen, but Gagne will replace Piniero, and that right their is a vast improvement.

If you told me this in 2001 I'd be esstatic, but right now, ehh. I would rather have another bat off the bench. Gabbard would of made an amazing #4 or #5 starter when Wake and Schill are gone...

Exactly. Even though the Sox have the best bullpen in baseball, you never have enough pitching.

Which doesn't explain why they're trading away Gabbard. I rather have a stockpile of starters than relievers.

Sox have Gagne deal
Eric Gagne has reportedly agreed to come to the Red Sox and be the setup man, according to NESN's Tom Caron. The Sox would send outfield prospects David Murphy and Engel Beltre, along with pitcher Kason Gabbard, to Texas.

This gives the Red Sox that dominant right handed setup they had been lacking. Gabbard ceiling wasn't that high and if they need another starter this gives the opportunity to Buchholz, it also means that Lester is cemented in the rotation.

As a Red Sox fan, I'm liking this trade. While I may disagree with many things that Theo does, it was a good idea to move Gabbard while he's hot. I think that once the rest of the league starts to see more of him, his ERA will rise and he'll end up being a #4-#5 starter at best. The Sox have plenty of pitching depth in the minor leagues, so someone needed to be traded anyway. As for Murphy, he's only the team's 3rd best outfield prospect, and they already have Crisp and Drew tied up in long contracts, so once again there's no place for Murphy.

As a Red Sox fan, I'm lukewarm on this deal. Sure, Murphy and Gabbard are getting old for prospects, but they still have potential, whereas Gagne is extremely injury-prone. Best-case scenario, this makes the Sox practically unbeatable. Worst-case scenario, this is the next Glenn Davis deal.

I doubt it. I'm guessing Gabbard will be a bubble #5 pitcher for a weak team. This is a great trade for us.

The Red Sox bullpen is strong fortified with Gagne although Papelbon is expected to continue as the closer.
Papelbon, Gagne, Okajima, Delcarmen ... houh, it's amazing.

Do you expect Okajima to be the middle reliever who can occasionally close, then Gagne be the setup? From how the season started out, I'd say that they were considering Papelbon to start again, which they'd wanted to do.
If Lester works as the everyday #5 pitcher, that'll be a nice pitching staff.

They're planning on Gagne in the 7th, Okajima the 8th and Papelbon to close . . .

OK. Why are you being so civil?

And they just lost Brendan Donnelly for 2 seasons with Tommy John Surgery.

Then you add Javier Lopez and Kyle Snyder. I mean, even with the lose of Donnelly, this is a STRONG pen.
