According to MLB.com, the Nationals are close to signing Dmitri Young to a 2-year/$10 million extension.
So let's see, what happened to all this talk we need to deal Belliard and Young RIGHT now while they're hot to get a really good return?

Maybe there were no takers for what Trader Jim wanted in return. It might also be an indication that the Nats don't expect Johnson to make a comeback any time soon (or ever). The scariest thing is the talk that they plan on moving Dimitri to LF if Nick does return.
I guess 2/10 isn't out of the realm of what someone having a year like Dimitri would get on the open market. He might be desirable to an AL team who needs a 1B/DH, so we might still see him go in the off season or next spring.

According to this (http://washington.nationals.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20070728&content_id=2114594&vkey=news_was&fext=.jsp&c_id=was) article, posted today (Saturday, July 28th) at the Nationals website, prospects for Nick Johnson's return this season appear to be dimming. I'd read a couple of weeks ago that he was receiving cortisone shots in his hip (unrelated to the broken leg) and that chances for his return had slowed. Best that we keep Dimitri for the time being.

NEW YORK -- The Nationals made it official on Saturday afternoon by signing first baseman Dmitri Young to a two-year $10 million extension with an option.
The move comes a few days after the team signed infielder Ronnie Belliard to an extension. It also means that Young is off the trading block for the rest of this season.
Young, 33, is the most important player on the Nationals this season. He is pacing the Nationals in hitting (.331), RBIs (53) and on-base percentage (.384).
Young also was key to improving team chemistry. He is the leader and is always trying to give a young player a helping hand.

I miss Nick Johnson.
Damn Austin Kearns!
I would have preferred he be out the entire season with a broken leg the way he's playing now! :faint:
