Well, should they call up Joe Thurston from the minors, or go with a reliever from the minors?

What a disaster, talk about losing all that momentum from the 5 game winning streak...

Relax, look at all the Jays injuries, I stopped whining when the 7th man went to the DL...which was mid May. You think you have it rough? look at my sig, does the Chiefs record look that great?

All of you stop whining and look how bad a job the A's training staff is doing. Our's is getting ridicoulus. At least Piazza's was a legit baseball injury that couldn't have been prevented by the trainers.

Charlie Manual said it best:

"He's a big part of our offense. He's a big part of our defense. He's a huge part of our team. We're losing one of our best players."

You think the Jays are bad, take a look at the Nats' disabled list year after year for the past 3 seasons.

Well, I guess Gillick made a good move in recalling Joe Thurston. In addition, someone is filling in for Utley: 2B Tadahito Iguchi is joining the Phillies. I'm not joking, by the way. Can the Phillies turn up the firepower of the offense and cool down the incinerating bullpen and rotation?

What are they going to do with Iguchi when Chase returns? Tadahito doesn't seem like a bench player to me.

That's a good question. I guess designate Nunez for assignment and let Utley and Iguchi platoon when Chase returns. Knowing how bad Charlie Manuel is with managing (see: his antics in Cleveland), he may have them play every game together, go a couple at bats with Utley, then have Gooch finish the game, or vice versa.

I don't know what they'll do, in reality, when Chase Utley returns from the DL in a couple weeks.

Well, here's what the scenario would be when Utley returns.

Put Iguchi at SS? No, Rollins is there. Though, Iguchi could give Rollins a day off.

Put Iguchi at 1B? Absolutely not, Howard is there. I doubt Tadahito would do a good job there anyway.

Put Iguchi at 3B? This should be the most realistic option. You have Wes Helms and Abraham Nunez, but neither of them are worth writing home about.

Any chance of a 5 man infield? Considering how small a ballpark the Phillies have, it wouldn't suprise me to see this shift in some games, as you put Iguchi between Rollins and Utley. ;)

This is exactly what I was wondering.

As daft as Manuel may be at times, even he wouldn't platoon Utley and Iguchi...would he?

Guys, Wes Helms is a good player having a down year, don't give up on him just yet.

Nunez, on the other hand, sucks.

Iguchi's a free agent at the end of the year, so the papers say, so I'd think the Phils haven't thought much about this. They're worried about the short term. However if Utley comes back and is ready to go, moving one of the 2B to third would be something they might consider, as that slot hasn't been productive.

Getting Iguchi was a strange move unless they have plans for him after Utley returns. I don't want to criticize the Phillies for trying to fill a big hole while Chase is out but this seems like a panic move. Not that it matters because with Chase they are a .500 team so it's not like they were playoff bound to begin with.

While I'm not going to debate your conclusion about the team's quality because I basically agree with it, I read the acquisition of Iguchi as one of several things: 1) Gillick doesn't want the team to think management has thrown in the towel, although they're not getting a top starter; 2) Gillick actually thinks he can get a top starter, and thus be competitive; 3) Gillick doesn't think he can get a top starter, but the playoffs are good enough, and he thinks they can make it without the starter and with Iguchi subbing for Utley for a few weeks. The trade deadline will likely eliminate one or more of those possibilities.

They really don't have a 2B who can fill in for a month & it seems like they don't have a whole lot of confidence in Nunez to fill that role. To me, I don't think it matters much. Iguchi is probably not much better than Nunez. I doubt either player will make much of a difference. But it's probably not a bad trade because it appears they didn't give up much to get Iguchi.

It will be interesting to see if Manuel sticks with Rollins as the #3 hitter in the lineup. I've wanted to see him in the #3 hole for awhile so they can put players like Bourn & Victorino who want to steal bases in the top of the order. Plus Rollins is hitting well over .300 with runners on base.

I was reading the Inquirer online today and atleast there's some good news.

No more than 4 weeks from now, he will be lending his offense again, too, replacing replacement Tadahito Iguchi, acquired from the White Sox before last night's game.

The Phillies were delighted that Utley yesterday had successful surgery on the fractured fourth metacarpal on his right hand, the bone that runs from wrist to ring finger. The procedure involved inserting a pin at the bone's base, at the wrist, and running it up through the mushy tunnel inside the bone to stabilize the fracture. It took hand specialist Dr. Randy Culp 20 minutes at Methodist Hospital.

The healing will take 2 weeks. The comeback will probably take 4 weeks, maybe 3, according to the team physician, Dr. Michael Ciccotti.

"That's better than the 4 to 6 weeks they originally said," gushed Manuel, craving the return of Utley's .336 average, 17 homers, 82 RBI and ironhanded leadership.

Here's a 2007 comparison. BA's pretty much the same, but I'd say Tadahito is a definite boost in production over Nunez.

Tadahito Iguchi PHI 90 327 45 82 17 4 6 31 8 1 44 65 0.251 0.340 0.382

Phillies did well in the first few games without Utley. Of course they were playing the Nationals & the Pirates. With this team it seems the hitting is contagious. A lot of that has to do with whether they are home or away too. They either all hit or no one hits. So they can still score 8 runs a game without Chase & they can still struggle to get 1 or 2 with Chase.

Iguchi has played well so far.

I like Iguchi. Not as much as Utley because Utley is the best 2Bman in the Majors but I'm alright with Igooch if Dobbs and him platoon (or if Dobbs plays more in left that won't bother me). I'm also wondering why the Phillies didn't try to sign Mark Bellhorn. He's a 3Bman who I believe can play SS and 2B if needed like Nunez and Bell.

From the Phillies website:

"No third for Tadahito: Maybe Tadahito Iguchi won't play third base, despite the feeling that he may take grounders there once Chase Utley returns from the disabled list.

"I would say it's a very remote, remote possibility," general manager Pat Gillick told Comcast SportsNet. "It's a different position. A lot of times, people that can play the middle of the diamond have a tough time moving to the corners."

Of course, this doesn't mean the Phillies won't try it."
