Who are the most prolific double play tandem in major league baseball history?
I believe that it's Alan Trammell and Lou Whitaker, but I can't find confirmation anywhere on the web.
Thank you.

I am almost POSITIVE that it is Trammell and Whitaker. But I don't have the numbers with me to back that up.

Are we talking lifetime numbers or seasonal? A major factor in turning a lot of double plays is lousy pitching. The more runners a pitching staff allows on base, the more double plays are likely to be turned. Many of the best single season numbers for turning double plays belong to teams with a poor pitching staff.
Almost anyone who played shortstop when Bill Mazeroski was at second base for Pittsburgh has to be in the conversation regarding most double plays by a keystone combo. Dick Groat, Gene Alley, take your pick.

I was assuming Career wise, since he brough up Tram/Whitaker.
But it would be interesting to know the single season leaders as well.

This may help along those lines. Granted, this seems to be about the most double plays in a season for an infield, not just the second base/shortstop tandem, so I'm not sure....

Are we talking about most raw double plays turned by a tandem? Because I think it makes more sense to measure it against an estimated expectation, like Bill James does when calculating Win Shares. James notes that the single season bests generally come from Rizzuto-Gordon. But I don't know which tandem was highest above expectation for their careers.

I do know that Mazeroski participated in more DPs than anyone in history.

Omar Vizquel just passed Ozzie Smith for most double plays participated in by a shortstop:)
I would think Tram and Lou would have the tandem record just because of how long they were teammates...
