what is the hinge angle in your swing? also i was a fresh. in hs and played varsity and my coach told me to have my hands shoulder level and to keep them back. he also told me that when the pitcher gets to his balance point that is when i shud get my weight back. then he said you are supposed to recognize the pitch location and step to where it is pitched and swing. my summer ball coach completely disagrees and says you are supposed to step in the same spot every time. also he told me to keep my hands up shoulder height or higher. ill try to get a clip of my swing. any thoughts?? thnx

Step to the same spot every time, by stepping in different directions, you loose your power......

Hinge is a term used to create a slight upward swing plane, as opposed to a level or downward swing plane. It is achieved by hinging your back leg so that it is almost parallel to the ground. If you go to Mike Epstein's website on rotational hitting and view the swing clips you will see the hinge in the back knee, high lead elbow, lead arm parallel to ground before launch, back elbow close to body, swing follow through to a firm front leg with a slight lean back at contact results in a slight upward swing plane. It is the swing most power hitters use.

I used to step to where the pitch was and id loose alot of power. Im in the same sit. as u being a incoming somph and what not. But as for your hands above or below the shoulders wouldn't it be able what your more comfortable with. mine at above but i no alot of guys who are playing college ball now that have their hands below the shoulders.

but step to the same place everytime, and it helps with your balance

when watching pitcher, look at the bill of his hat. The ball should be coming from there unless he submarines the ball. Also watch for his release point and see if it is different for fast ball curve etc.

I was told when coming up that you step to the ball. But know it to the same spot and on those outside pitches you need to wait on the ball and take it to the opposite field.

I tell my son when there is a differing point of views to research after he has just taken a lesson from a trust hitting instructor that just say "I am working on it" so as not to act difficult.

good luck

I don't think that's the hinge this thread is referring to. It's the hinge at your wrists, which is a 90 degree angle from front forearm to the bat. The 90 degrees is maintained for a long time as rotation occurs. It is kept to get maximum lag of the bathead.

You may be right but also notice the hinge in Bond's back knee. I've also heard the term maintaining the power L to describe the hinge in your wrist. Both are used in rotational swings.
