--With the rookie draft winding down, if not actually finsished, I thought everyone would be interested in getting a look at who is available in free agency. The Premium Free Agent (PFA) portion of the draft will kick off at 8PM EST on Friday, July 13 (the supersitous amoung us may want to avoid offering mega-deals on that day:) ). I've pared the list down to players who ought to be worth bidding on to try and keep it a little shorter tyhan last years marathon. It will kick off promptly and I am going to try to push the pace as much as possible.
--The PFA will auction these players in this order (based on 1965 salary);
Frank Howard - somebody's cleanup hitter for the next 5 years
Milt Pappas - decent rotation option
Rocky Colavito - solid starter now, but age is catching up to him
Bob Alllsion - injury problems this year, but still has some good years
Johnny Callison - solid starter for the rest of the decade
Jim Perry - very good pitcher, but underused in real life limiting his IP
--That is all for the PFA. The secondary auction of all remaining free agents will commence immediately after the conclusion of the PFA and conclude at 9PM EST on Monday, July 16.
--I'd like everyone to make sure their rosters/salaries are updated before the auction gets underway. Please post the number of players you have under contract and your total salary in this thread prior to that. No bids will be accepted from teams failing to provide updated salary data. Also, please remember you will need to reserve 250K per open slot on your roster to get to 40 men by Opening Day. Subtract that from the amount you have under the cap before figuring what you can afford to bid in the auction.
--Three PFA remain on multi-year deals to their current club. If not traded before then, they will be on waivers from 8PM Thursday to 8PM Friday. If not claimed they will stay with their current club. Those players are Ken Boyer, Lou Johnson and Jerry Buchek

The Redbirds, after about 20 test sims, have determined that they are probably not going to be able to make a run this year as I'd hoped. The draft just didn't have anyone able to help this season. To that end, we have a few parts that could be useful to a contender. The price is draft picks or young talent.....

Billy McCool-great lefty reliever, also solid next year, making 1M
Clay Carroll-great RH reliever, solid in 68, 69 also, making 1M
Bruce Howard-great starter for this year, OK next, making 1.5M
Bob Bailey-very solid 3Bman, but falls off before next year, making 1.25M

You know where to find me :)

All kidding aside, it is too bad because JW sure made things interesting. But with all those low payrolls, I expect some big spending on Friday.

Maybe the Legends can make up some ground this season!

TOTAL SALARY = $58 Million for 35 players

Erik Bedard

The Gold Sox claim Jerry Buchek.

Provided this goes through, I will now be at 47.5M for 33 players.

catcher24
07-12-2007, 06:26 PM
OK, I edited my roster/salary to reflect Buchek's being claimed off of waivers.

And FYI, Dan, Buchek is in the second year of a 3 year free agent contract that pays 1.5 million per year. He'll become a free agent at the end of the 1967 season.

The Stingers are at 31 players with a salary of 75.75 million. Hmm, I didn't think the cash bug would catch up so fast. Anyway, I have a question. What is the buyout rate at again? Half of what they would have made if they still played?

leecemark
07-13-2007, 06:18 AM
--Half of the remaining value of their contract. Buyouts had to be exercised by the end of the non-tender period though. If you release someone now you take the full contract value as a cap hit.

Wasp
07-13-2007, 06:23 AM

catcher24

There isn't any home discount rule for these guys, anyway. That'll kick in next year, after forced free agents are all gone.

leecemark
07-13-2007, 07:00 PM
--The home town discount rule applies only to players taken in the rookie draft who remain with their original team until reaching free agency after 6 years. It doesn't apply to anyone until next year when the 1962 draftees go on the block, but any of those guys picked in the expansion draft (and still with the team that drafted them) would be eligible for the HTD.

Erik Bedard

I don't think HTD would apply, Mark. As I recall, the guys taken by the expansion teams from the doormats were all on year to year contracts, same as the guys picked by the original teams back in 1961. So they wouldn't become free agents until released by the drafting team or traded anyway.

I saw Joe Hoerner on the FA eligible list. I find this mildly disturbing, as I don't seem to recall dropping him, and I should still have three years left of him (it would be especially galling for me to lose him, seeing as how I've drafted him and kept him on the bench for three years without using him).

Unless I'm terribly mistaken, you can go over and then make cuts, but the salary of any player cut will still count against you, of course.

Exactly. I'll take the hit on the salaries; I need massive help on starting pitching, as I'm about 600 innings short. Hopefully I can fill it up with a bunch of subpar 70 or 80 ERA+ guys with 140 innings nobody else wants.

leecemark
07-16-2007, 06:40 AM
--Lew is correct. You can sign as many guys as you want as long as you don't exceed 100M in salary. You would need to cut the excess before Opening Day and the cuts would count against your cap for the remainder of the season. Also you are not permitted to have bids out that would put you over the cap if all of them turned out to be winners. If you're bidding on 20 guys with the hopes of getting 10 the total bids for the 20 still can not exceed your available cap space.

leecemark
07-16-2007, 07:00 AM
--Five is the most you can put in your rotation. You'd have to switch the 6th guy in for different pitchers over the course of the season to balance the innings. Or if you have a deep pen you could set your relief usage to more and a 170 IP guy (good for 210 IP at 125%) can probably stay in the rotaion all season no problem. I only had one 200 IP guy in my rotation last season and it was definately manageable.

JW - The Diablos have already bid 250K on Johnny Edwards. I believe I or they mistakenly listed him as Donnie Edwards, but in checking the entire player roster for 1965 in DM, the only Edwards listed is Johnny.

I have roughly $23 mill in cap space, and put out 30 bids totalling about $10 mill. So I'm fine in that regard.

I believe these are all the current bids as of Shoeless Joes Jerry Grote bid (Post #236). However, I DO NOT GUARANTEE they are entirely accurate. If you've made a bid on a player or players, please let me know if they are missing. Thanks, and now for the grand finale (total chaos, as usual).

Jim Gosger - 0.25

Gosger is, I believe, on a multiyear contract with the Diablos, as he's slated to be my fifth outfielder this year.

Mark, can you verify whether Gosger belongs to the Diablos? I show him as a free agent also.

Post 474. I signed him to a three year deal before the 1965 season.
