Here it is Pilots fans. Almost the All-Star break. Let’s turn back the clock now to 1969. Washington, D.C.. The Pilots’ All-Star selection and leading hitter, Mike Hegan was lost to a hamstring pull and was replaced by The Big “D”, Don Mincher.
At the time Baltimore was leading the American League Eastern Division by 11 games over Boston. Minnesota was leading the American League Western Division by 4 games over Oakland. Chicago was leading the National League Eastern Division by 4 ½ games over New York, and Atlanta was leading the National League Western Division over Los Angeles and San Francisco by 1 game, Cincinnati by 3 ½ games, and Houston by 7 games.
We pick up the WNBC New York broadcast game in progress in the fourth inning…
Jim Spencer: We are just in the fourth inning and we are due to be here for quite a little while. Gibson throws. Mincher started around. It’s called a strike. Whether it’s a swinging strike or called, I don’t know. But it’s strike one.
Sandy Koufax: I think he did commit himself and break those wrists.
Jim Spencer: Gibson back again. This time he’s low. It’s one and one. No defensive changes for either team thus far, but we will have one now that Howard is out of the game for the American League. One-one fouled back by Mincher. Don, during the regular season hitting .240, but does have 17 homeruns and 51 RBIs. Gibson throws and Mincher strikes out. One run on two hits, no errors, and two left. And at the end of four complete now, it’s the National League nine and the American League three.
